Clarky - You realise you're gonna have to post a pic somewhere, don't you... Or at least mail me one.
I'm going up to jam with Paul Huxley (The Local Person) tomorrow. It's a relatively long drive, so I hope he's not better than me... lol

Hi. I've been playing for 19 years now and am starting to record my own progressive metal compositions. I am finding that I am being VERY critical of my own phrasing and technique. Do you have any tips that might help me overcome these concerns and be more "in-the-pocket" in my timing and note selection? Thanks!!! Darren

Clarky- that guitar sounds sweet, like neil morgan said, show us a pic.- Neil, I've been practising extra hard this week... ;) but I'm sure we'll have a great time (even if you do smoke me off the guitar- I can always resort to my Euphonium :p
Also Clarky- I've had troubles with IUMA for some time. It doesn't seem to have liked my Getright for ages, so I started bypassing it for the use of IUMA but it's not working at all now.. at least I got my Shanghai Interlude v2 first ;)
Oh and Neil... I have (very) limited recording gear, but we might end up end up recording something for the masses- how does that sound? I don't mind but I think it might be fun. Got a few ideas to jam on, I'm working on a backing track for one of them, just ready for a guest solo from Mr Neeeeeeeil Morgan!!!!! (don't worry, it's in A minor)

Major Tom, I just made a contribution to your cause....I "stemmed" for Joe...lol! Its nice to see that he is number 3 on the list. Anyways, who the heck is Jan Akkerman? Some Norweigan shredder? He's got to be a decent guitarist if he is #1.
Joe, I was wondering.....on your song "Day at the Beach" (new rays of an ancient sun), is your guitar tuned differently or are you using a capo?
NonSmoker is still NonSmoking......
P.S. I asked about Day at the Beach because my friends are getting married next month and they asked me to play that song during a part of their wedding ceremony, I thought that was a cool idea, except I've never tried to play it the right way..lol...your input would be greatly appreciated.......Dave

Archangel777: Something that helped me, (still does from time to time) was a book called "Zen Guitar", by Philip Toshio Sudo.
You have to learn how to rid your critical self from the creative process. It's not as trivial as some might believe. It's that voice that tells you to change something you've just created to make it "better". I love Michael Hedges' qoute regarding composition:
" You can't MAKE your music good. You can't try to BE good. You can try to be present and you can try to remain open so what is going to speak to you can speak THROUGH you."
He was a genious and I miss him terribly. Those of you who have not had the privilege should get a listen to his material. It changed my life....... Joe can vouche for this as he worked with him on the Pat Martino record, "All Sides Now".
It's fine to be critical after the fact... I've redone things many times until I've gotten the execution as close as possible to what I heard in my head. But, it doesn't belong in the "room" of creation, catch my drift? I've been playing for 22 years and it really wasn't until recent times that I realized this and my world is much different now.
Take care...
Kell

NonSmoker Jan Akkerman is a local guitarist from holland. He is in fact one of the best guitarists on this side of the ocean. He had some international succes with a band called Focus (That was in the early seventies). During that period of time he took over the #1 position of Eric Clapton!
Who was on that position for about seven years before Jan akkerman took over. Though in the early day Jan played blues based Rock and also some symphonic rock, these days he is a all-round Jazz guitarist. Played also in the night of the guitar with Robbie krieger and others.
Major Tom
P.S. Thanks for the vote. Though Joe is on the third place, he is seeded the second guitarist in that poll. Number two is called NOT ON THE LIST (that doesn't realy count, does it?)

Oh dear, I think I've over done it this time. Due to my severe whammy bar usage/ bar torture... the tremolo on my strat is coming off!! T-T My strat has a vintage tremolo (the one with 6 screws that fixes it on the wood). Everytime I do a dive bomb or pull up, the screws loosen & the bridge rises about 1cm. So I have to keep tightening the screws but they just keep coming off! Help! Anyone with the same problem or can offer me some help??

Dave, your doin' it, bro!! Keep it going, your doing great!! As I sit here at my computer, all I can smell is that stank from my neighbor who smokes on her back porch. That crap comes in every open window (or AC vent in this case) and stinks up my house. She refuses to believe I can smell it in my house (she's 8' away from my back door!) She don't smoke in her house or car because she don't want to ruin anything with that brown film & stench cigarette smoke leaves behind, but she don't care about her lungs, teeth, or her body. She even sits on her porch in a winter coat, a hat, gloves, & a blanket in the wintertime to smoke. She has NO idea how insane she is. Save the non-living things (house & car) & slowly kill the body. Whatever? *end of rant*
JBlaze...what?? That ear douche did you some good, huh? LOL! The candles might be a good prophylactic method to keep them clear, but DON'T try it if you have any ear pain or infection at all. Might be worth your $100. to check into it. Glad to HEAR your feeling better.

It';s just a poll! And a little-known one at that! We all know Joe's the "best", so what's the point?
Having said that - what makes a guitarist "better"? They're all different. I think it's a bad idea to even compare.
Why don't you do a poll on drug laws or child porn or rape convictions compared to rape reportings or reoffending drink-drivers or percentage of email that is spam or how many red cars I counted today.
