Yay!!!!!!!!! My phone works again!!!!!!

My "Secret Jewel Box" has literally just arrived, about five minutes ago. The picks are pink, man! (?) And why is there a mirror on the inside? I guess the little compartment at the top could beused as a make-up box...

ebadros - There aren't really any exercises I can think of for learning Pitch Axis, as it's more of a concept than a technique, but phrasing's a whole different story. Come up with an easy lick that you know you can play perfectly every time. Now slightly change the articulation of it, ie. the way the notes are played. For example, if the last note is bent, make it a slide instead. Now it's phrased differently. Change the duration of some of the notes, change where abouts in the bar the lick starts, and all this sort of thing. It's all really simple stuff, but once you master it you can come up with some really great ideas. Steve Vai's riff from "The Attitude Song" takes phrasing to the extreme, because of Chris Frazier's 4/4 drum beat over the 7/8 main theme. The riff cycles around starting on different beats of the (4/4) bar, until eventually it returns to the beginning of the bar. Excellent idea. "Hill Groove" is another good one for phrasing, but it's more subtle here - when the main melody is moved up the octave, Joe bends to the last note, whereas befor it was just a normal fretted note. Hope this helps.

Clarky - Can your super cool computer program on which you write all your stuff do odd time-signatures, namely 5/4? If so, I have an unjustifiably large favour to ask...

Neil.

Ovation1 --- Yeah!! Paul Gilbert is the man!! I really like his playing and his attitude! I watched the DVD of him and his 100 guitars... can't imagine changing outfits for every guitar!! hahahahaha....Is he the honorary Dean of MI in Japan? I assume so since he doesn't live in Japan.

Did you notice that YG labelled both of Joe's Chromeboy guitars as JS2000 instead of JS1000?

Master Yoda --- glad to hear that your Phone is working again!

Sorry for the multiple post but:

Psycho Monkey --- You have a point!! I was thinking that the term "Orient" includes the middle east region as well but that in recent years, it no longer did....

In my opinion, that everyone is intitled to, Satch does not do drugs. The man is TALENTED and he works hard. Is that such a hard thing to beleive simply because most everyone else on MTV are dirty bastards with no talent and are only there because they are sellable to a gullable public?

Don't get me started on that.

That is all :-))

Yoda - the program I use is a sequencer call Cubase VST 32. It's pretty much an industry standard.

Yes, it can handle any time signature.. better still, you can change time sig and tempo within a song as often as you wish and at any position within a bar....

I've used this stuff many times with my old prog band Siberia... we often used signatures like 9/8, 5/4, 7/8, 17/8, 30/16, and the list goes on.... our music was vary rarely in 4/4 or 12/8....

The thing with some of the more unusual time signaures is that there are so many ways to mess with them.... They can be really great fun to play with but thay can also prove to be a bit of a handful at times too...

Like anything else, the more you mess with them, the more familiar they become and therefore they become less frightening to mess with...

If you're in a band and playing with unusual time sigs, you need a sriously good drummer....

This is because 'the one' is no longer intuative [at least at first] as it is in 4/4 or 12/8... The phrase length and accents are now all different so before attempting to write melodies or improvise you'll need to listen to the groove for a while so that your inner ear can aclimatise.... The next time we get together I can show you all kinds of screwy stuff I did with Siberia and David Cross [which is all very rich in this odd stuff]...

So what is it you would like me to program for you...?????

Stay lucky bro

Hey Joe, {funny I've heard that somewhere before} I caught your last show in L.A. at the Wiltern and was lucky enough to run into Jeff Campitelli afterwords. That was really cool, he's a great dude and awsome drummer. But I asked him why you guys never do the Leno show when you,re in town and he said he'd love to but you guys haven't been asked. Sounds like you you need to talk to your promoter. I mentioned that I live here and I should get over there and tell Leno to get you on and Jeff said if i did that I "would have back stage passes for life". Well that sounded like the ultimate offer so when I found out you'll be in town on August 10th at the Greek I WROTE A LETTER TO THE PRODUCERS AND TOLD THEM ABOUT YOU AND WHEN YOU WERE GOING TO BE IN TOWN. That's right, if you guys get invited to the LENO SHOW this time around, Imight be the one responsible. If for some reason you read this ask Jeff about it, Ithink he'll probably remember. I mean afterall he did me the PICK YOU WARMED UP WITH that night. He said HE gives stuff out to real fans.Well I'm gonna say this without hesitation, I AM YOUR BIGGEST FAN. All I listen to is Joe Satriani. I mean Sept. 18th 1970 changed my life to, cause I'm as big a Hendrix fan as you are. Well I hpe you get on Leno but I'll be OK if you aren't cause I'LL BE LEANING ON THE STAGE AT THE GREEK on AUG.10TH AND i CAN'T WAIT. p.s. {had to go on line and paid $120.00 a ticket} but I know it'll be worth it. PLAY ALL NITE !!!!

>To all can you explain the technic used by the band for adapting in live the double guitar melodies as Joe's solo over Joe's rythmic?.. i know there is a doubleganger!! LOL

but seriously...is it the bass doing the rythmic or keybords in guitar tones??

Quantum- If you look in the photo gallery of Joe's european tour, in one picture it shows his pedal board! I don't know man, but the wah he used (for that show any way) Looked like an Ernie Ball. If you've ever seen a live Metallica video and saw Kirk Hammett's wah....... Joe's look's just like it and I do believe Kirk uses an Ernie Ball wah.

Mr Nick - ha ha.... 30 16ths to the bar..... very funky....

Ovation1 - where expecting to play Germany, Belgium and Holland.... there is a remote chance of a New York gig [although I can't really see it happening] and next March we may play in Mexico...

The new album that will be released pretty soon [3 to 6 months I guess] IMHO is the best thing he has ever done...

The album 'Tested to Destruction' is me playing all guitars.... [under strict supervision of the band - to prevent me from charging off into the land of shred]

The album 'Exiles' is mostly me and some of it is Robert Fripp.

The key thing to note is that this stuff is not me playing 'naturally' as I do on my IUMA site... On this stuff I am 'under orders' because I am their regular session guys...

However, on the new album, David let me off the leash... and it is a better representation of how I play...

As soon as I know the name of the album and it's availability I'll let y'all know...

Ethn - I actually bought that issue used. It's date was April 1990.

Ovation1 - What?

Phrygian Dom - I do have that issue. Did it feature "Titans of the Tele" on the front cover? And Joe's section was titled Exploring a Crystal Planet? Well that's the one I have and it has lots of sections from CP in it.

Joe - Any chance of Memories or Hordes of Locusts for August 31st?

The Guitar Tunning journalist : What do ya think about this state of fact Joe?

JOE (laughin') :hmmm...thats only work and work and...interviews...and potatoes flyin' chips! (big decontracted HaHaHaHaHa!)

Hmmm... should be about time, Joe. Yup. Time for a post.

Does anyone own a copy of the Guitarist #222?? It has 2 articles on Joe!! Pretty cool.

Anyone tried a metal pick? I use a home made brass pick. I tried an aluminium pick first. But the aluminium didn't last very long. Then I came across brass... the most durable, loudest, hardest, fastest pick I've ever used. But it's only good for certain playing styles. Pick scrapes sound very 'metallic', but it's a no-no when it comes to strumming on an acoustic. Other than that, it's great for power chords, speedy things, lead or solos. One of my fave picks.
