Great show last night. After King's X and Dream Theater's absolutely rocking stage, you kept it real cool, Joe. I loved Starry Night. Also, I am personally in love with Matt's bass style. Very smooth and each tone was coming out really clean. I kinda wanted Eric on stage, but Galen was keeping it cool too. Interesting new show crew. Anyway, rock on!

Paul: Good to have the experience of seeing Joe enough times live to have a favorite performance to compaire the latest to! Yes you have a much more discriminative ear, but that's just the perfectionist in you. Once you listen to the album a bit more, it'll grow on you. Keep in mind not all songs are going to please you all of the time. Count your blessings........... instead of rating them. You will be happier. Keep playing, you have great stuff. Take care of the kid (I know you do) and KTF Joe: Some how I think you've heard "Above the Numbers." Your stuff is WAY better! Peace

I'm sitting here at work contemplating my computer and the tasks ahead of me for the day. HAHAHAH!!! Yeah right! I can't think about anything but the fact that I will be seeing Joe for the first time tomorrow in Denver. I can't wait, it's tormenting me! If I get chosen for the aftershow thing with Joe I will definitely be at the highest point in life. Nothing could be better. Of course if that does happen I'll have to ask Joe to let me play an original for him, get his opinion and critique of it. Wouldn't that be something? Play for Joe? As a music lover, guitarist and Satch Fan what could ever top it? Oh well, I can dream can't I?
Anyone else attending the show in Dever at the City Lights Pavillion? I'll be in Section E Seat 14 or 15. I'm going with a friend so I'm not sure what seat I'll be in. If you're going look for me. I'll be wearing a Dark Red Texas A&M cap and will have a smile on my face that looks like it could do permanent damage to the muscles in my cheeks.
SEE YOU THERE!!
Peace, love and JOE!

Yo folks... I jusst have to say... Engines Of Creation is the best work yet from Joe ! The playing is more intresting, and the songs are more original... the new record doesnt feel 100% joe to me, but i guess it is because it was joe who did it :) hehe... but i love EOC and hope to hear more like that record... And also more like early joe, like Echo and Flying in a blue dream... Joe, you rule !

2 TON TESSIE: Thanks for the reminder that we don't have to be blindingly fast to be good. I needed that. And you're right on target.
By the way, I'll take tips from anyone. Doesn't have to be Joe, but I'm sure his will be of great value. I figure anyone can teach me something.

Clarky yep, The Royal Albert Hall gig was 1998 I think. Warren Cuccurullo played first. When I find my ticket I will confirm this. My most memorable show was the Shepherds Bush in June 2000, Joe rocked the house. The previous year had been at Wembley, a way too big venue( for Crystal Planet Tour).
I think SBM lacks some 'Power '..........compared to everything else we are used to. Just my opinion Guys..... take it easy on me....luv anibur***

Hi everyone...
webmaster - It was cool to get to see you last night. I don't think I introduced myself, but I was the other guy in the Un-List shirt next to Boyd. You came to talk to us before Joe went on.
Derickguitar - Steve Vai went to the same high school as Joe...they've known each other forever.
SandMan72 - As boring as it may sound, get a metronome. Practice your scales slowly and gradually increase the speed. There really aren't any shortcuts you can take to magically become a faster player.
Get a loaf - Where were your seats originally, and where did you sneak up to during the gig? I was in the third row right in front of Matt and Galen. I saw someone playing air guitar during Friends up front...maybe it was you. ;-)
Anuj - It was nice meeting you too. Too bad we didn't have much time to talk before the show started, though.
bill collins - Welcome to the site.
Clarky - Interesting thoughts. The artwork and tour tshirts for SBM do look like they were thrown together quickly, but Joe did say that he was disappointed that he had to tour so soon after the album's release. And honestly, I like the simplistic look of the tour merchandise.
ILuvMyJS100 - Joe's guitars are very similar to the JS 1000 signature model.
jblaze1 - Check out the message boards on Dream Theater's site and you can find their set lists. They change the set around all the time, though.
...Austin...

Sandman72: looking to improve your legato style? Practice playing in place one fret at a time in a row. 1234. then on the next string over(either direction) 1234. then use the ittalian rehersal method, go faster, and faster...until it's just plain crazy, or untill you crack up laughing. It's one way to biuld the tensil strength in your left hand. don't forgret scales. up and down Foreward and backward! Good luck, For just a start. KTF

iambic - yeah, done that a few times and it's super fun :D
but you should do your scales from low string to high string also, this builts up accuracy - and you should use alternate picking - this builts up co-ordination :)
you just have to take it slow and be patient, I'm at the same stage, I think most (joe included) still do these excersises so you are among friends :)
good luck dude :)

If I'm not practicing something specific or learning a specific song or riff then I will sit and play chops that I already know and try to bring the speed up. I also try to find ways to make chops from other songs fit together by throwing in some of my own stuff. But it's true that you just need to be patient and keep at it. The finger exercises are great and will increase dexterity and coordination between pick hand and fret hand. Some times I'll plug in a movie that I've seen before and sit on the couch doing exerxises and scales. It's mindless and that's the idea. You have to "be able to decipher the sound without having to look at it" to quote Joe. That's why I try watching a flick while doing exercizes up and down the neck. It keeps me loose, builds speed and dexterity and forces me to keep my eyes off of the neck. Just keep at it and find what works for you.
Drew.

Gruska -- i was playing along with the radio as i usually do when i practice, and "Hella Good" came on. i decided to figure it out, because i kinda liked the riff. turns out the riff is just a G# harmonic minor lick. it is not atonal, it is not weird, just harmonic minor. i was surprised to see that, actually.
Austin Lewis!!! -- DUDE!! that WAS me in front of you, playing air guitar during "friends" -- as you can probably tell from my last post, i have a deep, huge emotional connection to that song, and i was totally into it, and i had to play it along with him. man, i was groovin, and i think Joe could tell. i was really happy that he looked at me, he did one of those famous "YA!" + nod + smile. man, i still feel great from that concert. i looked around for you Austin, i saw megaboyd swinging his little digital band thingy. man that concert was "one big rush".....
those were my original seats, i just got back a little late. so i didn't sneak up there, i just got hella good seats. to tell you the truth, i wasn't really watching matt and galen...

I had a real good vacation in Luxemburg. Had my JS CD's with me. On a warm day listening to SBM while drinking a nice cold bottle Diekirch Beer (local brewery) under a blue sky.......yeah, I had a real good vacation.
I went to some local CD shops in Luxemburg. Looked for SBM and put it in front of the stock. Two days later.......sold!!
Hope you all had a good vacation as well. (or are going to have...)

Dang. No love from the aftershow pass contest. Blast it. Ah the dream crushed in a moment of withering pain and desolation. Life has no meaning... oh wait... I forgot. Guitar is life and I still have my guitar so I guess there is reason to live.
Congratulations to Liquid_Cell, ktsdmp7 and Hamiketa21!! Enjoy the time with Joe and remember me out there after the show is over having to drive home without getting to shake his hand. Is the guilt trip working? Keep your eyes peeled for me! I'll be in Section E Seat 14 with a dark red Texas A&M cap. Hope to see you there.
Okay, so it's only 20 minutes after 5 and I'm dying for 6 to get here so I can get ready to head for Denver. I just hope my car doesn't break down on the way there. That would truly blow.
Joe, thank you for inspiring my life, love and career as a guitarist. You have a way of touching my soul with your music. It's obvious that you play from the heart. You are the greatest. You rank #1 with John Pettrucci a close second so imagine how jazzed I am that I'm going to be able to see you both in one night. Take Care and I'll see you tomorrow.
Drew

MICHELLE: I'm sure you were thinking the same thing. I know u also love the Scenes from NY DVD. How can anyone not like DT after seeing that? Now u stop thinking before I get into your mind again! :)
CLARKY AND ANIBUR: I hear SBM and I can't help but think that it sounds "mature". Less flash, and in my opinion, more atmospheric playing. I like the album, but it's certain that it's not as good as Crystal Planet for example. On the other hand, Epic now knows that whenever Joe releases something or goes out on tour we all follow, so they may want to take us to the cleaners while they can. Same thing that's happening with the Simpsons collectibles, but that's another story.
Sorry but I'm going to double-post.

Clarky, it's good to open a can of worms in here once in a while...lol. All I can say in Joe's defense is that it's not easy dealing with record companies. Sometimes they give you a deadline...etc..etc
Also, someone mentioned how great he was 10 years ago on the FIABD tour...well he was 10 years younger too, cut him some slack people he's pushing 50. And NO I'm not sucking up, he does'nt know who I am so I have no reason to. Some day when arthritis and old age slow down his playing, and he is left to plunking out old John Lee Hooker tunes on an acoustic with Grandpa Steve Vai, I'm still going to buy his music and go see him play.....lol (I'm laughing at myself now) I'll quit......
Thanks for the info Webmaster :) 20 people out of 36,000+ fans? Sounds like a long shot for me...lol....I hope I win anyways :)
Oh one more thing...I watched "Hannibal" last night for the first time. It's the only movie I've ever watched that made me "gag" (I'm referring to the end where he feeds Ray Liotta his own brains) stir-fried of course. I wonder how many people yakked when they saw that ending....gross!!!!
