How's it goin' Matt? Long time no post.....
How's the recording going?
Oh yeah, did you ever check out my friend Jason Blake at mP3.com? Check out "Distilled" in particular, I think you'd dig it. He's definitley one of my top ten heroes and he's in my own town.
Let us know how things are going?

Yoda - I checked out 'Crimson'..... much better stuff... the best I've heard from you so far.. the improvment is glaring not only in your playing but the writing too. Nice stuff with the wah too - does this mean that some of my trickery is rubbing off on you... lol... anyhow.. good stuff... you're moving from strength to strength and quickly too... I noticed that you are messing with orchestration to control the dynamics - i.e. thinning out the band to bass and drums during some sections.. whilst this is a good way of giving the more thickly orchestrated sections greater energy due to the great difference between them, I'd be concious of not thinning it too much [especially in a piece with such a high tempo].. It makes it sound a little 'bare' [because the lead guitar is not quite consuming the available space that is created]... I'd have been inclined to either:
Play a more melodic line with notes of greater length... you dont really need a high note rate but let them sound for long durations.... a great place therefore for nice long bends and sweet vibrato.....
or
Place a clean chorused / phased / flanged guitar part with plenty of reverb and delay below to provided some homophony to play against..nice chrods that unobtrusively fill the empty speace.. the bass and drums are maintaing the pace and the chords are soft so the difference in dynamic to the louder part is essencially unchanged. Alternatively, a nice gentle and swirly string pad with longish attack and release times from the keys would serve a similar purpose...
The vibe would be atmospheric but the drive from the bass and drums provide a 'latent energy'.. it wants to explode.. [remember the middle section from the Raft of the Medusa??]
On the whole... very very good.. this proves that you are thinking not only about your playing but about the compositional aspect too.. this is as important as the playing itself [and even determines your approach].....
It seems to me that our fruitful jam session my have contributed in some small way to this improvement.. this reminds me a little of the way I got you to solo from different angles to the same groove over and over... It got you thinking on your feet... playing more compositionally rather than mindlessly melting frets in Em... lol lol.
I'll be looking forward to your next work.....
maybe try something that contains modulation to change the mood in addition to orchestration.....
always write and play to effect... song first.... shredz second
Very encouraging stuff indeed...

CLARKY- thanks for answering my post. What i want to be able to do is good improvisation. Not just average soloing, but sound like i really know what i'm doing. I've been playing guitar for about nine years and i've mostly just been playing cover songs to become a better player. The first song I learned was wipe out or something. haha. The last song I learned was summer song. All I've ever played are cover songs, so I need a lot of work in composing and soloing. Any advise/criticism would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mr Nick - We aren't ignorant just because we didn't record the show.
For Adun - That Top Ten list was great...LOL.
JS Clone 1 / ovation1 - There was a time when I couldn't stand CP. I only liked the first half of it. Some of my favorites from the album now (Psycho Monkey, A Train Of Angels, etc.) were songs that I couldn't stand to listen to early on.
dyer - Are they Joe concert photos? If you email them to the webmaster (webmaster@satriani.com), he'll put them up on the site.

I am new to the site, but not the music. I will see Joe 9/14 at Jones Beach. The music is special to me cause of it's emotional and deep expression. It is by far my favorite sound which allows me to have my own interpetation.
The music puts me in my own realm, where I can relate to a specific time in my life, especially the last 11 months. I am going through a divorce due to my wife being unfailthful, but today I am stronger and much lighter, lol and in great shape. 245lbs to 152lbs.
Thanks Joe for sharing the great sounds that filled the days of sorrow and brought a smile and lifted my heart.
I thought after seeing 9/11 4 blocks away where I work on Houston and Wasshington ST was going to be the worst thing in my life to see and hear. It was not, 3 weeks later I found out something more as stated above. Now I am better for it, and doing fantastic.
I wanted to purchase a signed Ibanez in a Guitar store in Mass in March, but did not have that much cash with me. Hopefully will get another shot at it again.
The band is great and tight! Go Stu!
See you all at Jones! Section 5R!

hey folks, just wanted to let you know that i've posted some photos a friend of mine took at The Bone yesterday. they're over in the road section and anyone who listened can (and should) write a review there. if you were lucky enough to be there in person, list yourself of course as attending. and yes, thebone folks got a bit confused-- there was not a video webcast of the show. however, i believe they may be doing some streaming of a couple songs in the future. i'll let you know, of course.
as most of you have noticed, i also uploaded photos from the concord show yesterday and a number of them turned out pretty well.
i also just finally uploaded some pictures from the rehearsal for Strange Beautiful Tour which can be seen by clicking on the "band road gallery" on the road section, or with this link (which is now included in the drop-down link). joe and jeff said they hope to be able to upload more photos from the remaining US dates :}
asia tour dates will be coming shortly, along with the setlist contest winner names and final details on the upcoming webcast that starts at the end of this week!

Hi Joe,
In a recent interview in the San Francisco Chronicle you said that "musical talent does not progress with coordination." I'm interested what your thoughts are then on how musical talent does progress.
Thanks!

Clarky, you are right, age really has not slowed him down at all. It makes me realize that I still have many years of playing ahead of me :) I have to admit that I like to listen to the first seven songs of SBM more than the last seven. It's still taking time for me to soak it all in....
Gotta love that top ten list...lol
BennyBoombox, I hope you are one of the 20 winners of the autographed CD and concert t-shirt. If you don't win, I'll send you a copy. That kind of sux that SBM is'nt being released in Australia......Peace all, Dave
Sharon, actually I prefer to replace the ice cream with a woman when I'm eating hot fudge and whipped cream ;)

CLARKY: I do not agree with you about your comments on SBM, I think the album is very intense and WELL AND PERFECTLY PRODUCED. Every song on the album is perfectly balanced musically. I think you have to sit down and hear it all over agan. Above all, I think Erick Caudiux, John Cuniberti and Joe did a great job on the production of the album.
If it was a review of a Motion Picture, I will probably give it 4.5 stars out of 5.

For Adun: Thanks man, for that Top Ten list of yours.
Very funny. LOL.
BTW -> Good idea of putting voting messages in all those CD boxes. But I was on a holiday, had no computer travelin' with me, only wife and kids. But had my ghettoblaster and some nice CD's with me.
Everybody else: Keep on rockin' in a Free World !!
To Joe: G3? => Walter Trout. A great composer (both lyrics and music) and a very good guitarist. You should listen to his interpretation of Red House or his version of Going Down; on the album Life in the Jungle. Or check out his website www.waltertrout.com.
