theory posse - here goes.. this may seem a little simplistic for some folks but I guess that I have to start somewhere... it may as well be at the start...more experienced guys - hang on in there... the fun stuff will turn up later....... the first thing I want you to think about and understand [before we get into all the nasty math] is "what is a scale?"....... trickier question than you'd think at first glance...

The word 'scale' originates from the Italian 'escala' which literally means steps. So we can stick with the 'steps' idea to explain a few things...

So, think of a flight of stairs where there are 12 steps....

The distance between each step is called an 'interval' and is measured in 'semi tones'.... so there are 12 semi tones from the bottom to the top. The top is called an 'octave' because the interval is 12 semi tones [6 tones] from the bottom....

The bottom step is called the 'tonic'... [more about this another time..]

A scale defines the steps that are available for use within the octave..... Some scales have 7 notes, some have 5 notes... The 'chromatic' scale has all of the notes.....

The thing determining the way that a scale sounds [it's 'tonality'] are the distances that the notes within the scale have with respect to the tonic [bottom step....]... for example... from the bottom step, then next step available is not the one right above but the one after.. which is an interval of 1 tone [two semi tones = 1 tone]. From there, the next available step is 1 tone again. From there, the next is a semi tone... and so on...

What we are doing is establishing a template of intervals [steps that are available] to chop up an octave...

different scales like minor, major etc have different templates of intervals... almost like saying.. "for a major scale, you can only tread on these steps, but for a minor scale, the steps avaiable are a little different....

when folks are pretty happy with this idea I can move on to 'spell' scales......

This past weekend, myself and Prog X spent a a$$-kicking evening at the Jones Beach Theatre in NY. Beautiful venue, butt-kicking music, and a great time had by all. Joe, I know it felt good to be home on the last leg of the US tour. Never been to LI before, but wouldn't mind going back. Hey Joe, have you heard of the Harvest Diner on Old Country Rd???? Ate there for breakfast the morning after the concert - GREAT FOOD! All in all, great job Joe! Once again, you did not dissapoint. Also, great comedy releif during the Dream Theatre set. Most of all, thanks for the bonus G2 duel with John Petrucci.

one more little thing to point out - when applying this idea to your guitar..... the frets on a guitar are one semi tone appart... so for example, the interval of a tone from an open string would be the 2nd fret.... 2 1/2 tones would be the 5th fret etc...

[bAustin - Yeah i've seen that. That's a relatively new one. I've memorized all the characters lines for most evry episode.

Master Yoda - I'm looking forward to it. To be honest, i've only ever read music for 3 years for trombone (bass clef). I never really cared about it much so I never excelled in it. This year i'm taking a begginners level guitar class. It's ridiculously easy at this point but the basics for reading music was brought back to me and the treble clef was introduced. I went from the first exercise we did in that class which was quarter notes, half notes, dotted half and quarter notes, eigth notes and whole notes all the way to a classical guitar piece called "Panis Angeilcus". by Cesar Frank. It's quite nice. I'm think i'm at the 6th measure. I've only spent 20 minutes on it so far but I really wanna finish it all.

Climber - I think I know why not many people check out your music. You have to go through this registration period with a user name, password, email and the sort.

I highly recommend iuma.com or mp3.com. Downloads are quicker and easier. I'm sure more people would visit that way.

I remember one of your songs which I liked. It kind of had a techno backing with an SRV type rhythm guitar with a Satriani melody if my memory serves me well.

I'll check out more though, I really will. Let me know if you're gonna consider the other mp3 hosting sites.

Hi Joe, I've been a fan for years. I have every cd, video, dvd and I also own one of your style Guitars. I've been waiting ever since your Flying In A Blue Dream Tour for you to come back to Winnipeg, but no luck. So, my fiance and I travelled to Toronto to see you on August 31/02. She had also won backstage passes off of this web site to meet you. But, when we left on the Wednesday before the show, she had not yet received the message that we had won. So, alas, we did not know when we were down there, that we had passes to see you. When we got back and found out, I was very disappointed. The show was amazing and I'm glad that we went. I bought a T-shirt and a Mug, my fiance bought a Keychain. She was disappointed that you don't have womens T-shirts and thought that I should tell you. Is there anything you can do for either situation? Thanks.

i was bored in school today..so i looked for some decent guitar lessons...clarky..-dont worry..i think some people will need you to explain the basics to understand the complicated stuff (possibly)shown on these sites :

guitar lessons by satch, vai, petruci, eric johnson, and others...

some tabs-and lots of them!!

this may work...the computers at school were rubbish and so it took too long to load up..hopefully it should work on your nice fast ones at home.

ENJOY!!

edit: ok..that last one doesn't work..dont know why...

jsclone1-joe had said something on the webcast about the seven string guitar being confusing.....i know he was joking by the way he played it.....i thought that was what he was saying..i had just gotten home from school and could have been mistaken though....i definatly meant no insult to joe i thought that he was joking....anyway oh i read the other post and that was what joe said something about ibanez trying to confuse him....fat chance..... Clarky-i'm following you so far.....could you get to improvisation in one of those excerpts...i'd like to hear your thoughts on that....i like what you have so far.... Today I let this guy listen to Joe and Vai.....he has only been playing for two weeks...kind of fun to watch sensory overload in person....it is so much fun...he'll go home and think about what he heard and then stop playing for a second and think Holy Sh*( those guys were Fu*(en awsome.....I think I've paid my debt to society now let me go officer I didn't do no one no harm.....his head exploded when I showed up....

Mr Nick - my aim here is an attempt to lay down some solid foundations for folks... once the basics are nicely understood then the funky stuff is much easier to get your head around.... I won't claim to be a guru or definative authority so I don't have all of the answers but what I do know is pretty solid....

masterdrummer - once we get down the basics... scales, chords, modes etc then I see no reason why we should not explore this in practicle terms... like how to expand on compositional and improvisational ideas..... maybe at a later time I'll be able to demonstrate some of the ideas and post them on my IUMA site... right now this is not possible though because I am prepping for Jemfest UK and righting / recording my album.... once all of that's out of the way I'll have much more free time.... I'll do everything that I possibly can though....

masterdrummer - one more thing with respect to your friend and Satch / Vai... this is a little something I did for fun..... on my IUMA site, album 3 is a track called Speaking in Tongues... it's my own little imagination playing a game.... "what if Satch played over a Vai track????".... and this is how I imagined that it would sound..... within my own capabilities that is...lol lol
