theory posse - so here is the next bit... putting all of this knowledge onto the neck.... this is where it all really starts to fall into place.... Several years ago, shortly after man discovered fire, I decided that I had a few issues with my playing and they needed to be put straight... the first issue was not knowing the neck well enough, the second was my alternate picking was not what it should be, the third was the dexterity of my 'fretting' hand, the forth was stamina and the last was just being generally untidy [strings sounding that shouldn't etc].... so I devised a cunning plan....lol
"let's figure out something that I can use to fix all of these things in a single exercise"....
The solution to the plan plan was an amalgum of various things I'd seen in mags, tutorial vids, great advice etc ...
I caled the solution 'G everywhere'.... and this is how it works...
It's based upon the major scale of G so the notes are G, A, B, C, D, E, F#. - and you play three notes per string...
Starting on the 6th string [the big fat one that is wrapped and his name is 'E'] the 1st note is G [3rd fret], then A [5th fret] then B [7th fret]
On the 5th string [also known as 'A'] the 1st note is C [3rd fret], then D [5th fret], then E [7th fret]
On the 4th string [who's name is 'D'] the 1st note is F# [4th fret], then G [5th fret], then A [7th fret].
and so on across the 3rd string [G], the 2nd string [B] and the 1st string [E].... it is real important to work this out for yourself.... if I spoon feed you too much then you'll stop thinking and listening to the results... so work the notes out on the neck, play them and listen very hard to ensure that the overriding sound matches what you played on the first part [which I gave you]....
To turn this into a nice exercise with 4 beats to the bar in 16th notes I had to mess with it and create a 'turn-around'... and this is how it works....
one the 1st string, instead of playing three notes you play 2 [G and A] and then drop onto the 3rd note you played on the 2nd string [F#] and the decend back down the scale from there....
it sounds like this.... notes getting higher -> on 2nd string D, E, F#. on 1st string G, A, ...then dropping to the 2nd string F# and notes getting lower on the 2nd string E, D. on the 3rd string C, B etc.. back down the the very start.
a bit mucky but you'll see why later...
so this is the 1st position of G major starting of the 6th string, 3rd fret [G]....
so if there are 7 notes in the scale, there must be 7 difference positions [fingerings] each one starting at the next note of the G major scale on the 6th string...
so the 2nd position starts on 'A' [5th fret].. the 3rd position starts on 'B' [7th fret] and so on until you find yourself starting on G up at the 15 fret [octave]....
note that you'll have to work out the fingering of each position because they are all completely different.... this sounds like a whole pile of work but it is so worth it.... learn these 7 postitions and you'll see that you'll be able to play in any key, any standard mode and the natural minor scale anywhere on the neck... so a little hard work now pays massive dividends later..
learn the 1st position first...and make sure you can play from the low G up to the high A and back down before moving on...
next learn the 2nd position...... then play between the 1st and nd positions... then the 3rd and play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 1st and so on... building on the next position each time [until you can do this from 1st right up to the octave and back down...]
Alternate picking all the way too.... I use this as a warm up, to take a close look at technique issue [because I have a 'standard' against which I can check myself], I playing it very slow, then moderate, the pretty quick....

If you want to change key for exable to A... the complete set of positions move up 2 frets and start on the 5th fret.... in F# they would drop 1 fret from the G and start on the 2nd fret....
so knowing this allows you right now to play a major scale in any key from the nut to the neck pickup..... no place on the neck is a mystery..... heap big medicine....

good stuff again clarky.
xcrystalplanetx - loko out for line 6 amps, you should be able to get a spider for that which might really suit you. Also look for tech21. similar kinda idea but much simpler and gets some really great tones. as for marshalls, you might have a look at the AVT series. I doubt you'd want to go for a low priced fender- they really shine when you get up to the top of the range stuff but their solid state sounds... awful really. I still love (i mean loooove) by fender twin.
Laney's a good amp company to take a look out two they have a sound somewhere between fender marshall and mesa boogie.

Shell, you don't have to apologize. I have slipped up once already (oops, did I say that). On a positive note, that one cigarette knocked me on my ass and tasted like absolute crap. So at this point, I'll be even less likely to have one again. In case anyone is interested, I went almost 3 months before I cheated. And the reason I had one was because we were playing a gig one night a while back, and our singer spilled an entire whiskey coke on our mixing board in between the 2nd and 3rd set. Luckily (for him), we knew someone with a PA that let us borrow it :) It was a stressful moment and I gave in....no one is perfect.
Clarky, I had to skip over your posts because I have'nt tested myself yet from your last one...lol...I promise I'll keep up from now on......thanks again for the lessons, you are doing all of us a world of good :)
Edit: Clarky, the only one I blundered on was the Bb, I came up with Bb C D Eb E# F# G#, mostly my fault but my daughter started singing the ABC song when she saw my homework....lol...that kind of messed my head up a little (lame excuse)

sparrow - Ok, I haven't heard that interview...probably because I don't live in the UK. ;-) That's cool about your guitar, by the way. Can you get some pictures online somehow? I wanna see it glow.
bong hits3 - It was 102 in Sacramento today? Ouch. I'm glad I'm down in Long Beach for school...even though it was 91 today.
NonSmoker - Your daughter messed you up with the ABC song? LOL. That's ok, as long as you don't try to find an H note on your guitar. ;-)

Welcome back, me! I haven't been anywhere different, just not posting in t2j. Austin: Correct, the Reaper Rap is by Steve Vai, but there is also a track called "The Reaper" which didn't have the vocal overdubs. (They're both on The Elusive Light And Sound 1)
Also, on "New Blues" there is a faint vocal before the count in, which I recall Joe told someone was Doug Wimbish doing his "Buddy Rich" impression. I have no idea what he actually says... I was listening to Dreaming #11 EP for the first time in quite a while, and Joe introduces the musicians at the start of Ice 9.
What I want to know is, when he announces Stu Hamm, the crowd goes "mooo". Why the "mooo"? I think he's a good bass player...

Who-cracked-a-tinnie: yeah, those sunnies, they are awful. I've seen them around. Only "too-cool-for-you" people wear them. I'm too cool for people that think they are too cool for me...it's a sort of coolness thing.
cool=toughguy cool=laidback/easygoing

Tapper5 - Practice as many scales in as many positions otherwise you'll turn out like me and get stuck on one key. The more scales, the more positions you know, the more you learn about scale patterns, the quicker you come to understanding and using them. Definately and without a doubt.
