new post.... I was emailing a mate today (hi r6rocker) about this, and after listening to Circumstances and The Trees I have to tell you all a thought I've had for along time now..... I firmly believe that Geddy Lee is a hyper-intelligent mega-being from a distant planet. I'm serious.
Even Mike Keneally's rhythm section isn't as tight as Ged and Neil... nor for that matter is a beggar's wallet or a nun's... well let's not get into that ;-)

Matt. I'm using Acid Style for the recording to the hard drive and, Cool Edit 2000 for noise reduction and other processing.
I'm trying to get serious with the next song. Instead of just screwing around. The Wife accuses me of being a perfectionist, but you have to be don't you?
The tickets go on sale Saturday SO we will be online at 11:59 and 59 seconds on friday. Check that. The Wife says 12:00 pm. So I'll have to get someone to distract the boss so I can get online. AH HA HA HA HA!!!

PhrygianDominant: He talks about Tipper Gore some, in the context of a group of women married to senators or members of the congress, trying to censor the music lyrics. They were the ones that managed to put those 'Explicit Lyrics'-stickers on the covers.
I don't recall anything about AudioGalaxy/Napster though. I'll have to read it again, maybe I skipped that part. :) On the other hand, he writes about a hilarious and very farce-like trial in England where he was accused of being obscene in his lyrics and therefore has to cancel a concert. There's a transcript in the book from the trial and it's VERY amusing......... LOL

Phrygian Dominant: Actually, I have a Zoom noise reduction in my multi effects, but I'm looking for a separate pedal that I can hook up at the end of my signal chain. I once played a gig where they had the 'best' PA system. Well, the PA made my equipment buzz like a bee! It was realy annoying! Even with the hum cancel activated on my strat!! So any help would be welcome!

clarky and local person thanks for the tuition, guys. i'm learning, and having fun filling in the blanks of my limited theory and practice, so the simple explanations are much apprecieted.
i'm a teacher/instructor my self, so i understand how hard it can be to think of 4-5 different ways of explaining the same thing. its difficult to be a beginner again.
i also subscribe to the "the most stupid, is the one not asked" theory, so i'm just letting you know now that there will be more stupid questions coming.

Hey Joe,
I just saw you in Camden with Dream theater. I don't think the show could've been bad wherever I sat. I think I can agree that it was some Strange Beautiful Music. The fact that I had really good seats made the night quite enjoyable. And I have to say I'm quite proud to wear the black JS sweatshirt with your name on the left sleeve. It is officialy my favorite piece of clothing. That thing goes with me everywhere. And not to sound like more of an idiot than I already am; but that has to be one of the most comfortable hooded sweatshirts I have ever worn. Keep on rockin'. You definately know how to write a beautiful melody. While the show was great, I do wish you would have focused more on the new album in concert. Not a complaint. Just a thought. Okay.

The new album rips. I like the stuff you did with the seven string guitars. I think Mind Storm is my favorite off the album. I was reading some of the messages and someone mentioned Jennifer Batten for the next g3 tour. That would definately be a must see. It's great to see a female who can hold her own in this male-dominated sport.
I unfortunately missed the recent Boston show with Dream Theatre and King's X. Blew the water pump in my car. Bummer!! I had been looking forward to it all summer too.

dragonchild: no I don't think the Napster thing is in there, but I believe Tipper Gore started it all off after the Parental Advisory nonsense. Man she must be bored in her life.
Narface: yeah buzz is so annoying! I find using batteries in effects instead of power supplies helps, but it can get expensive! Maybe you could try and get hold of a parametric EQ and dial in a deep cut at 50Hz - that should get rid of modt of your mains-related buzz. Your own frequency for mains might be slightly different there in HK though. Boss do a noise suppressor (an NS-something I think), so you might want to try that too. I think there are (expensive) power boards you can get with filtering built in too. Try searching google for guitar effects buzz - it happens to the best of us ;-) Good luck!

Hello Joe,
My name is Neil Rigg, I've been a fan for years. What sort of stuff are you working on now? I plan to go to the guitar institue next year, or the year after once I've saved up enough money from the band I work in. I heard that you have held seminars there, is this true?
How often do you practice? And have you slowed down with age? So many questions Joe but I don't want to take up to much space on here so I will leave it at that. Thanks for the inspiration.

I think i have found the problem on my cutting out amp, and i think i will not have to buy new cabels.. I think because i use my half stack in my room with all my other equipment it can get quite warm, so I think the amp my be over heating, what do you guys think?.......
Joe.... Have you made any plans for a G3 tour?

JOE: Quick question. The guitar that was stolen; did you use it on the SBM recordings? If so, and I know this may sting a little, but that's just your pride taking a hit (a little like a paper cut) but would it not be better to just say.."It's gone..but it was insured"? After all, with the insurance money and a word in the right ear at Ibanez, I am sure something better could be sourced. Think of it as an old faithfull dog. Great when it was a puppy, but in the latter years the bad smell from the rotting teeth was never that nice to smell - however much you loved the dang thing. And SBM was full of rotting teeth! Just a thought.

kinger - I'm real glad that this is getting straight in your mind... great stuff... when you use this 'ttsttts' scheme, you are looking at the intervals between the degrees instead of from each degree with respect to the tonic... and yes, this template of intervals applies only to a major scale... the only draw back with looking at a scale this way is that is don't tell you much about the scale itself.... if you use the T, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 system you can see at a glance that the 3rd for example is major... this therfore immediately hints at the tonality... for example.... harmonic minor is, using your system, t,s,t,t,s,1 1/2t,s... as opposed to T,2, b3, 4, 5, b6, 7... which indicates that only the 3rd and 6th are minor.... this gives you a better idea of what is going on... both systems are however perfectly valid....
the problem with 'differing opinions' is that many guitarists learn their theory by word of mouth of from books / mags... this can sometimes cause problems... you can't ask a book questions if you're not sure and need further explanation... and often the word of mouth earning contains slang or mis-used terms.... music is like any other language, so if folks just invent terms / slang or mis-use existing terms, then the true meaning is either lost, not full represented, distorted or not understood in the first place....
I too suffered with all of this [as I am a self taught street shredding by origin] but all of this was nicely staightened out when I studied music at the university of London... it was then that it all began to fall into place and become very clear to me...
Deadpool - I'm glad you're enjoying this... great stuff... and no, I'm not a music or guitar teacher... never have been either... I do however go to great lengths to help out my brother / sister shredders though... kind of "share the wealth"...lol

local person - neapolitan 6ths are not in the 'augmented 6th' family, they are completely different..the Nea 6th is a chord IV substitute.. the 'aug 6th' function is a little different... in my track The Rape of the Sabine Women, I use a Neapolitan 6th in the soft section in the middle... [the F in 1st inversion in the key of Em moving to V7 - really quite a beautiful progression].. check out Beethovens Sonata Moonlight, 2nd mvt.... the Nea 6th usage provides such a fabulous twist in the melody... tremendous stuff...

akreepish - but this things, Hungarian minor, French 6th are the technical names.... love them or hate them, that is what they are called.... e.g. the use of a major chord on the flattened super tonic in 1st inversion as a substitute for chord IV in a IV->V progression at a perfect cadence was a stylistic inovation of mid-Barroque period Naples.. the term Neapolitan 6th was applied to it and has remained ever since [something like 300 years]... when you talk to a music scholar about a Neapolitan 6th, they immediately understand you... desribing a German 6th or the Tristan 6th is very painful without all of the studying that goes with it... German 6th is therefore the recognised technical term for this chord...
Yes the Tristan chord is in first inversion but there is a fair bit more to it than that. E, G# C is not correct as the 'aug 6th' family are not triads and they follow very specific rules... first you need to know what key you are in before you can look at notes as the 'aug 6th' chords also occur at a specific interval with respect to the tonic and are also part of a progression....If there is sufficient interest then I'll describe these chords in detail when I move into the more complex theoretical stuff.. they are very cool, and I'm using them on some of the tracks that I'm writing for my new album.. a German 6th in heavy metal with a full orchestra and chior sounds very cool indeed.... but I have to get the basics down first..... # : )
Mr Nick - why do you think that G# and Ab are the same note... let me know your thinking and I can take it from there...
