MOBIL - I see that you wanted to know what Phrygian Dominant sounds like, one of the words that springs to mind is original. You can hear some influences in there but he has his own sound and his music is very well structured, it's music first and foremost, by that i mean that it's music played on the guitar and not 'guitar music'. The reason for this is that he understands music and has studied it, he is also a good teacher (thanks Phryg.) I'm like you, never really learnt anything but just played by ear. It's good to a degree but it can be limiting. My advice ? if you've not been playing long start learning the theory now while the time is right. It ain't hard and you'll probably wonder why you never bothered before. Like Phryg. Dom. said (i think) check out what CLARKY has been posting recently, very useful and easy to understand. Just don't get caught up in his more complex discussions (lol).

quick note to let y'all know that i got a few more internet presale links which are now up in the road section. they're for the two LA HOB shows and the roseland theater show in portland. often times the internet presale windows are pretty short, so you might want to check the road section each day if you are hoping for one for your city -- i put them up when (and if) i get them. alas, that depends on the venue getting the info back to the booking agent which doesn't always happen...

matt king: Wow, didn't know that dude....it would be great to go there with just learning in mind, but if they take care of students in that fashion, then that's a tough road to follow.... You always impress me matt...whether with your music or your maturity (especially for your age!)....real people make it happen, and I'm sure your timing will be right dude, I just know it! :-)

Peace all, /\/\ike

Edit: Dave, (PhyDom) I might have what your looking for....Out of a "YG" practice mag....I'll Email ya'....

Narface : It's already gone. The peak was yesterday evening. Today the weather was fine and hot.

Shinjuku ? guitar shop ? well, there is the "Rock Inn", near the Virgin Megastore, but seriously, you will find a much broader choice in Ochanomizu (1 station from Tokyo on the chuo line)

They do sell ibanez, a few month back they had a JS Y2K for sale. But ok, if you say you don't have the time ... but from Shinjuku, ochanomizu is 2 stations away, a 7 minutes ride. not that bad. So if you can squeeze an hour in your schedule, I'm sure you won't regret it. anyways, enjoy your stay in Japan.

local person - the 'big 5' are Rachmaninov, Stravinski, Borodin, Shostakovich, Rimsky" [I think - jeez.. if I've got this wrong my old lecteror would give me such a beating... lol].... anyhow, it's also interesting to note that Tchiakovsky was never considered to be one of the 'big 5'.... and I think he is an awesome composer [especially the part of the 1812 that no one gets to hear [the 1st 15 or so minutes] - the bit without the cannons and the crass tune..lol]..
I know what you mean about Schoemburg... I had to analyse one of his works.... after 20 minutes [in the Royal Festival Hall] I was thinking "jeeez, this orchestra is taking yonks to tune up..." and my tutor is learning across "....are you following the score or staring into space in deep thought?"... I reply.. "I didn't realise they'd started playing"... lol ... lol [such a philistine...lol]... Berg is another 'serialist'... this is definately not for me....
I hope you enjoy the Bach.... also take a look at Schuberts unfinished Symph in Bm [no 5 I think].. the development section and how he unwinds it into the transition before the recapitulation in the 1st mvt is awesome.. great use of theme and dynamics... fff<sfz>fff ..... lol.. great stuff..
JSC1 - work into your practice nice and easy.... this may be a good time to totally rebuild your technique... I went through something similar... I missed a big session job through over practice... I could not play for 5 weeks [it almost killed me... lol]... I looked good and hard at my technique and realised that it was a huge contributor to my injury... I litterally rebuilt my playing style from scratch and came out, quicker, more accurate, with better dexterity and stamina... for me this injury turned out to be a godsend... It made me break some very bad habits....
Mobil - if you're interested in getting the very basics of music theory down... nice and solid.... then go back to 17th Sept... that's when I first started the 'theory posse' posts.... this stuff is designed for those that know nothing to very little.. the idea is to create a solid theoretic platform upon which we can build into more complex ideas... when it comes to talking about music in general, folks will then find it easier to relate to mentally and then to apply to the guitar..... take a look.. print the posts out and look at them nice and slowly... if you get stuck.... just give me a shout and we can straighten out your problems.....

CLARKY - 'I didn't realsie that they'd started' LMFAO! On a more serious note, you say that you straightened out some bad habits in your playing style, is there anything that you consider might be a common problem that you could advise people NOT to do ?

Hey Joe! I'm a huge fan of your music and the website is great. I write to u to ask if u can help me with something. If you are a spiritual person, which I think you are, I especially hear it in your music, please pray for all of the citizens of Louisiana. A horrible hurricane is heading our way and is expected to hit Lake Charles, LA, which is my hometown. I know that this has nothing to do with music but I thought, I hope you're cool with me asking. I can't even begin to express to you how much your music has inspired my guitar playing into realms which I thought I couldn't reach. You are a Zin-Master of the guitar...

Peace, Andrew

JSClone1 - I asked the question some time back if a person who was tone deaf could play an instrument. I had only one response and if my memory serves me correctly this was you. Now his guitar, amp, wires, books, pedal has taken over his half of the bedroom, I clean my half and he is left to clean his. ha ha.

Invigor - Have you only just realised how great girls are.

Ovation - Peanut Butter and thick crusty bread

I am become death, don't like this track, sorry Joe.

Phyg Dom - Nah, not dissing the teacher, he's quite funny actually, seems to have a knack on how to teach stuff. You'd have to watch the League of Gents tapes to appreciate the Kool, Kool bit. I have kids and dogs, they're all kids really, my husband is a big kid too.

Mr Nick - We live about a mile from Cannock, Hednesford Raceway is virtually round the corner for us.

LOL Sharon
