cool stuff,
My daughter (who is 3 and a half) loves listening to your music in the car and she keeps asking when you are coming over to play in our basement...! You try and explain to a very intelligent and independent child precisely why an internationally acclaimed guitarist with lots of cd's & concerts and what have you is probably unlikely to squeeze in a trip to an ontario basement...! I keep saying that you're terribly busy
right now, and that I lost your phone number anyway...
a small white lie which I feel a bit bad about - but she believes the part about my losing phone numbers all too easily.
anyway thanks for creating inspiring and amazing music - and for saving the world from another lousy guitarist (surfing with the alien was one of several factors in my packing in my rather sad attempts at rock stardom).
beege
ps. I know how awful it is to have a guitar stolen - Its weird how (no matter how expensive) a bunch of wood, plastic and metal can become so important...

Tapper5 - Well any scale is good to learn in as many positions as possible.
Of course, you're going to want to start of with the 7 major scale (church or liturgic) modes and work with them. One night you may want to practice G# phrygian. One night you may want to learn Fminor, who knows? Maybe you'd practice 1 scale per week on the fretboard.
Yes, as Matt and Clarky said, take each mode as a scale on it's own.
Learning the order of the modes and how they connect and continue off eachother on the fretboard is a way help when writing chord progressions because you know which root note will make a major, minor or diminished chord ASSUMING you're staying in the same key.

joe i have a couple questions for you. the first is question i have is about your "Hendrixy" sounding pedal. i was just wondering if it is custom built pedal. it sounds to me like a volume swell rigged to the circuitry of a roger mayer octavia analog fuzz pedal then fed through a filter taking all the crap that those effect would produce together. thus leaving a creamy beatiful sound which that pedal produces. anywayz that is just one of my many thoughts on that pedal. my other question is a favor to ask you. i went to your concert at the dte energy music theater with a couple of my friends on aug 30 and we couldnt even hear your guitar over the band. it was like they turned on the electricity for everyone else but you. we were really bummed man. so the next time you play there could you make a request to have your setup louder? it would be much appreciated. anyways it was still worth it to be in same vicinity that you guys were. it was cool as hell!!! anywayz g2g, take it easy man. peace

Just my opinion folks but the Carvin Legacy didn't sound nearly as good as what Stevie used on Passion & Warfare(Perfect Sound).I didn't like the Legacy sound at all on The Ultra Zone....Although one or two songs sounded o.k. but naaaaaaaaa!....Ovation1:Funny how things just turn out strange don't they?!!!....lol....Maybe he is watching more closely than we think???........Or....then again..........maybe not? jblaze1

HI.
You must be tired of reading messages about fan saying that your are God with guitar, but I need to say that I started listening to your music a few days ago...
I discovered your music because my bass teacher plays the guitar also and he recommends me some music to listen to like Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Steveie Ray Vaughan, Al di meola, etc...
My style of music is really different (The Cure, Red Hot...)
But you are really the best guitarist I have EVER listened to.
You really rock!
Strange Beautiful Music is a piece of art.
You have a new fan right now :)

ovation - yes I absolutely agree... use all fingers... when this stuff is 'automatic' it really helps with accuary especially at higher speeds...
r6rocker - I've not spoken to David for a while as I'm really focusing on getting ready for JemFest UK in 2 weeks time.... and may the Gods of Shred smile on me that day......
JSC1 - are you missing my point a little here?? # : ) ..... to learn all diatonic modes and the natural minor everywhere on the neck in any key you only have to learn 7 fingerings.... then a little math..... so by learning as many as possible means learn 7 different fingerings... not much to learn really.... especially when you think of all the music that this unlocks...

Joe, Just wanted to thank you for the autograph session you did back August 10th at the Wherehouse in Hollywood. I was there with my daughter. Later on that day the entire family (6) saw your incredible performance at the Greek Theater. We look forward to your next performance in the Los Angeles area...hopefully November or December of this year...Take Care. German.

Hey Satch, just wanted to say that "Mind Storm" is one of the best songs you've ever written. The new album is great!
Any chance you might hook up with Microsoft to put "Mind Storm" in the ads for "Halo 2" next Christmas? (XBox)
