I'm sure the tab for the Top Gun theme could be found by doing a search for: "songs not by Joe Satriani but you could be one of many that thought they were"

lol there Clarky....And on the 7 little fingerings....I see what your saying :-)....I wasn't very good at math, but you are making very good sense!!

peter mulas: I know Paul uses Laney's...That's why I asked MATT: "Makes me wonder why Mr. VAI and Mr. Gilbert use them (Legacy) :-0...." Because Matt has had problems with all three of his Laney'....I'm guessing he bought them from the same store....That would explain alot......I love Legacy', and have not heard of problems with them....Matt was stating that he thinks they are the biggest pieces of crap out there....

AVARICE: Does that mean your keeping the original ;-).... (you said you have a "copy" of SBM :-))

Peace all, /\/\ike

death cube - I spoke to the custom shop last Friday about my 7-string... apparently they used a sub-contractor to build the neck... and they are very unhappy with the result so they are going to sort it out...... so... no.. my baby is not ready yet... I said to the guys that given the amount of money I'm paying for this, I expect nothing less than a top notch instrument... don't rush it, don't cut corners..... they are replalcing the fingerboard and then taking the contractor to court over it...

JSC1 - if this system didn't work for you, how do you solve the problem of fingerings, positions, being in the right key etc... I'm interested to know ... basically, if someone else has another system then I'm always interested to look at the benefits and draw backs... never stop learning.......
tapper5 - once you've overcome the very basics... i.e. you can tune the thing, get your hands around a few chords, and a few basic scale shapes.... then start learning songs... you learn by example.... learn al the riffs first so don't get all hung up about the solos... just play all the riffs under it. This gets you moving in time with the band... timing and nice clear chord changes is the most important hurdle to over-come at this point.... in a band, even as the 'lead' player you only spend 5% to 10% of you time playing solos.... so the riffs come first... work hard on being in time with the band [being 'tight]... this is most important... if you are into rock / metal... a great place to learn simple riffs and rock solid timing is ACDC...

And like Phryg Dom says... try to find the start of my theory posts and follow it through.. there is some pretty usful stuff in there upon which we can build...

To help you find the 1st post, the start of my theory thing was on Sep 17th....

And most of all, practice is never a chore...enjoy your playing... when you've had enough just stop... never force it... don't fall out of love with the guitar because you tried too hard......

Stu - lol... there is a 'h'.... but only in German...lol...lol.
For Adun - you are refering to key signatures..... so on a score, you'll see a 'treble clef' [the funny curly thing on the left on a score] and immediately to the right of the clef you'll see a group of '#' or 'b' signs.... count them and you'll know the major key [if the piece is minor you'll know that too...]
ovation - when I get to the part about minors and modes... the math will become clear... then you'll see exactly how easy it is to unlock the entire neck with those 7 fingerings....
Avarice - jeez dude... where you been... this place is kinda quiet without you around... lol lol

Hey Joe, May I suggest Andy Timmons as the 3rd player for the next G3 tour? He's got fantastic melodies and chops. I think he would be a great compliment to you and Stevie. Anyway, I've seen you in Orlando the last 2 times you've been here, and both shows(G3 2001 & w/Dream Theater/King's X) were inspirational. Thanks for all the great music.

Peace,

Interesting fact: after recording their best work to date, "Dark Side of The Moon", Pink Floyd started recording an album using everything but standard instruments to make music. They wanted it to be so off the wall that it would never be compared to DSOTM. However, after completing three "songs", they realized that the sounds they were getting from long rubber bands stretched across a table and the like didn't really sound that great, so they ditched the project.

Trivia question: anyone know the name of that scrapped album?

(I wonder if Joe might try something far out to follow SBM...)

theory posse - so, a little recap... we've talked about what a scale actually is, looked at the intervals that form a major scale and figured out how to get a major scale off of the drawing board and onto the neck... in all seven positions. And to play in a different key, you have to move all 7 positions....

So once the '7' are nicely under your fingers [which will take a good few weeks and maybe months of hard work - which is well worth it] then you can essentially play a major scale anywhere of the neck in any key......

As 100% of your time is not spent on the guitar... we can move on with the mind... we can now look at chords...how they relate to a key, how are they built and what are their names.......

By definition, a chord equates to 'more than one pitch sounding simultaniously'.... so any two or more notes sounding together constitutes a 'chord'.....

First we will look at 'triads' which are chords made up of thee notes.
A triad is composed of a 'root', a '3rd', and a '5th'.
The root is the note from which the other notes are calculated....
the 3rd and the 5th provide the tonal characteristics of the chord.. and ulimately provide the 'name'..
A 3rd can be either a minor or major interval from the root [exactly the same relationship between the 3rd and tonic in a scale...]

a minor 3rd is 1 1/2 tones [3 frets] higher the the root

a major 3rd is 2 tones [4 frets] higher

Obiously you can't play two notes at a time on a single string so this is purely a means of working out what the note is....

A 5th can be either 'perfect' or 'imperfect'. If it is perfect then it is 3 1/2 tones [7 frets] higher that the root.
if it is imperfect it can be either 'diminished' or 'augmented'.. think about what these words actually mean...

to diminish something is to reduce it.. so a diminished 5th is a semi tone flat from the perfect 5th which is therefore 3 tones above the root [6 frets]..

and likewise, to augment something is to add to it so an augmented 5th is a semi tone higher than a perfect 5th which is 4 tones [8 frets].

Each note of a major scale is, in addition to being a note in its own right, also the root of a chord that is 'diatonic' to that scale....

to clarify a litte, 'diatonic' means that the notes available are only those from the scale... notes that are outside of the scale are 'enharmonic' [pretty much meaning - outside of the scale..lol] and called 'accidentals'....

for example... G major scale = G, A, B, C, D, E, F#... so if a chord was sounding that contained only notes within the key of G major the chord is 'diatonic'....

if a chord sounded with one or more notes outside of G major such as a Bb or a D# then the chord contains an accidental and is deemed 'undiatonic'...

If a major key contains 7 notes then there can only be 7 chords...... as each note represents a 'root' of a chord....

chords are numbered in 'roman' numerals... so if you see..
I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII - then these correspond to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc chord of a given key...

The name of a chord is determined by the note value of the root and the interval of the 3rd and the 5th...
a 3rd can be either minor or major and is therefore crucial to the name of the chord..
if the 5th is 'perfect' then it is considered to be pretty normal and is therefore not mentioned in the name.. so you only describe 5ths if the are imperfect...

theory posse - let's work out a few or the chords in G major...

The 1st degree of G is, funnily enough... G ... so the root of chord 'I' of G is also G. Next we need to find the 3rd of this 'G - something' chord.. and we get this from the scale by counting from the note that represents the root...
1st--2nd--3rd
G....A.....B
the 3rd is therefore the note B
by working out the distance of B from the root of G which happens to be 4 frets [major 3rd interval] higher we can now tell that it is a major 3rd. So far we have the chord 'G major - something'. Time to look at the 5th.
1st--2nd--3rd--4th--5th--6th--7th
G.....A.....B....C....D....E....F#
and the 5th is the note D
we can now figure that the note D is 7 frets higher than the root of G so it is 'perfect' and therefore will not be included in the name of the chord...

We have now just calculated chord I [spoken:"chord one"] of the key of G.... the chord is 'G major' and when writing chord charts it is represented as G.

Moving on, the 2nd degree of the G major scale is the note A so chord II will be 'A something'...

To find the 3rd of this 'A - something' chord.. we must go back to the scale by counting from the note that represents the root. in this case A..
1st--2nd--3rd
.A.....B......C
the 3rd is therefore the note C
by working out the distance of C from the root of A which happens to be 3 frets [minor 3rd interval] higher we can now tell that it is a minor 3rd. So far we have the chord 'A minor something'. Time to look at the 5th.
1st--2nd--3rd--4th--5th--6th--7th
.A.....B....C.....D......E.....F#...G
and the 5th is the note E
we can now figure that the note is 7 frets higher than the root of A so it is 'perfect' and therefore will not be included in the name of the chord...

We have now just calculated chord II [spoken:"chord two"] of the key of G.... the chord is 'A minor' and when writing chord charts it is represented as Am.

So, get the brain going and calculate the remaining chords that are diatonic to the key of G major.......

Usual stuff: shout if you're stuck, confused or want a beer with me...
