Clarky This is my SHOUT lol, i was wondering if you could help me.....today i bought a book from my local guitar shop on scales and modes, but the only problem is, the examples for the 7 modes in the book are all based around the c major scale because it has no sharps and flats etc etc, could you maybe tell me how to get to all the different positions on the neck for major scales, lol im trying to make myself as clear as possible bearing im mind im 14 and have only just started trying to get myself into musical theory, any help will be greatly appreiciated,
p.s i downloaded your version of steve vai's bad horsie and it really rocks!....Joe Rules....

Plum Loco: that's pretty mellow! Good stuff.
XCrystalPlanetX: Well I'm not Clarky (I think he's busy at JemFest tonight), but if you check my site the Guitar Reference pages 1 and 3 are up (OK I know they look crap). There's the formulae for major scale modes on Page 3, and "normal" scale formulae on Page 1. I hope this helps you out a bit. www.sharpfour.com.
Later, Dave

Greetings everybody. I was wondering if the "Evening with Joe" shows posted 27 Sept. represent the complete list for the near future, or if it is possible that additional shows will be added? I saw Joe for the first time with Dream Theater at Concord, and my only complaint was that there was not enough Joe, and I would really love to attend an "Evening with..." show. I am particularly interested in the possibility of a "Joe-only" show in the greater San Francisco area.

XCrystalPlanetX:OK dude, no worries. I don't want to tread on Clarky's toes, cos he's got this thread going now, but...... if you go to Page 1 on my site, there's the formula for the major scale - TTSTTTS, so pick a key and write out its major scale. Then go to page 3, pick a mode (or all of em!), and apply its formula to the major scale you wrote out. Let's say we use G Major - G A B C D E F# G. Then pick a mode, say Lydian. The formula says the only difference between major & lydian is that the 4th degree is sharpened (1 2 3 #4 5 6 7 1), so all you do to get a G Lydian is sharpen the fourth degree of G Major - G A B C# D E F# G. Eagle eyes might notice that this is the same notes as D Major, but starting and ending on a different note, but that's something inherent in the wonders of the modal system. Don't think of it is D starting on a different note, thinnk of it as G Lydian in its own right. I hope this helps a little more - it's time to eat down here in south London!!! I didn't spend ages on this cos of Paul's ongoing thread, but I'm pretty sure there'll be more in depth discussion when he gets to that part. Modes are wicked - there's a lot more to it than you might think!
Good luck, have patience. Later, Dave

Yeah I did a similar thing - I learned to read notation in the summer holidays between primay & secondary school lol. Trust me, though, I'd be very surprised if modes came up in your immediate studies. They'll probably get mentioned if you do stuff about Johann Pachelbel (fugue or canon in d I think it was for me), but I don't think there'll be much detailed study.
In my day (when it was all just fields ROFL) it was all harmony and counterpoint, etc. All good, all healthy.
You seem to be at a great age to start your studies of the guitar, though. Shout out if you need help - there's a lot of knowledge here, and IMHO knowledge was destined to be shared :-)
Enjoy your weekend, Dave

rac, a "Joe only" show in the Bay Area is about as common as an old hippie in the Bay Area. You can certainly count on seeing him more often than the majority of his fans. Consider yourself fortunate, as many of us have to wait a year or two before he makes it our way. Listen to me whine....eehhhhhheeee.....lol.

Well i've actually been playing guitars since i was about 6/7, but back then i just used to pick one up (everyone in my house plays guitar so theres usually one lying about) and just fiddle around, when i got to about 10 i started trying to play stuff by ear, since about 13+ i've started listening to satch and up until now i've just been learning how to play his stuff but never really gave musical theory a look in, but now im older and more acustom to music lol i've actually started trying to learn how music is put together etc etc. lol hey its really cool knowing that if i get stuck i can 'shout' (lol) here and hopefully i'll get some help. I wish joe would pop in! maybe soon....Joe Rules....

Is Slayer the scariest band in the world or what? I bought "Seasons in the Abyss"" today and it hit me right in the face. What a cool record. I hope Joe gets down to writing some new material soon. That would be cool. I'm also really pissed off about music today. Where are the solos in today's shitty bands. Limp Bizkit? Korn? F**k off. Where's the originality gone. At least Satch and co still play solos, and prove that if you're going to be anywhere near as good as them, you'll have to have some solos. Anyway, Instrumental rock and thrash rule. Kerry KIng or/and Jeff Hanneman should join the G3 team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, Joe! I was listening to Joe Satriani today and I just wanted to say what an incredible CD that is!! I loved that one from the minute I listened to it...I just love the style and sound. I'd love to hear more from this CD live someday! Cool #9 is fantastic, NO DOUBT...but what about 'If' and "Moroccan Sunset'? Those two are in the toss-up for my songs of the day! 'You're My World' and 'Home are gorgeous songs too...in fact 'Home' brought tears to my eyes every time I heard it for the longest time. Especially efter my Mom passed away in '01, even though we didn't have the closest relationship. Maybe it was because of that, actually...I don't know. Anyway, as usual, my thanks for such an inspirational CD! Just keep doin' what you do!!

Mr Nick - Standard trans. cars don't have govenors. Plus, people around here street race so they buy cheap cars like used Honda's and get as much power out of them as possible. Even worse things they do, they get rear spoilers which are like 4 ft off the rear end in the air and have the most annoying exhaust sound... they sound like blenders.
Invigor/Phryg Dom - Yes, but WinNT was a horrible gaming OS as was Win2000.
DaveMC - Every system is different. I find WinME worked fine with every PC that I have known to play Diablow 2.
Whojack - Haha, what did Nick tell me? Squiddles? Hilarious.
