Okay, I have gone back to theory. The last time I did this it scewed me up for weeks, because I was thinking too much about what I was playing and, of course, the emotion and feeling went away. I read everyones postings and there must be something to it, considering the way a lot of you play. Now, has anyone noticed the way Joe holds his pick? He holds it (or it looks like he holds it) way back over the first joint of his thumb. Anyone else do this? DON.

Clarky,
Question about suspension... since we've got the sus2 and sus4 style chords, I would think that the 2 and 4 are dissonant,
but what else is? Is it anything NOT in the primary triad?
i.e., if I'm working off a triad, is the 7th dissonant? What if I use a 7 chord?
Also, if I use a MINOR triad or chord of some sort, is the minor third dissonant?

Fine by me if you'd rather wait before introducing this type of information, just wondering about it though...

Hi everyone. Sorry for being unusually quiet for the past few days. The network at my university went down over the weekend, so I've been without internet access in my dorm for a few days. It really sucks...LOL. I had 12 pages of posts to go through, and now I have 7 left. I should be completely caught up by this time tomorrow, but we'll see. If anyone asked me a question and they don't get an answer tomorrow, just yell at me again. ;-)

GO ANGELS!!!

Phydeaux 3 - Cool pictures...congrats on getting married.

ovation1 - I'm the tall guy in the center of the third row on the LISF DVD. I have dark hair and have glasses. You can see me best at the end of Disc 1...the camera fades out on me at the very end of Summer Song. I'm wiping sweat from my face. You can also see me a lot during the Call And Response thing after Surfing With The Alien...I have a goofy grin on my face. Oh, and thanks for the guitar picture. I wish I could see those inlays up close, but I can already tell that they look cool.
T Lightnin - There isn't much that we can do about the 21+ stuff. Joe can't threaten the promoter because he's involved with Clear Channel and they're HUGE. If he doesn't go along with what the promoter wants most of the time, he wont have a promoter in the future. Sad but true.
Dave Mc - The PowerTab files use MIDI...so if you have a media conflict it might be related to that somehow. Can you play MIDI files by themselves?
MegaBoyd - Congrats on getting a link to work...hehe.

Harvster... So you liked the website hey ??? cool....my greatest struggle of working on a design-office is that you work with designers....i made the site, but wanted to make it much more interesting (in this setup by the way) but they don't even know what internet is, but they do want to decide how it is made....they stripped it all down...was much nicer at first...

I use AutoCAD 2002 here at the office, along with 3D studio VIZ, photoshop, illlustrator, indesign....but those are not used for the drafting of course...my email adress is listed in my profile, so send me a drawing once....would be nice...

Chrystal Planet....yeah, the JS1000WH is my dream guitar as well...love it to death....i really recommend it....yeah, upgrading a JS100 is a choice, but you wouldn't get near the JS1000 with it....the pickups, well, it's a nice upgrade, but not really neccessary...ever heard Pete Mulas playing his stock JS100 ??? i rest my case...and upgrading your JS100 to dimarzios and maybe another bridge is quite expensive.....better to save some more and buy your dream guitar...i learned it the hardway, but to be honest, i really really love my JS100 as well.......they both play nice, but the JS1000 feels like a godess....sounds so much mature...

The V-amp2 is pretty cool, i am not a great tweaker, but the sounds are pretty decent, and if you ARE a tweaker, you'll love it....also try out the new POD xt.....they are super.....

yeah 7ths are dissonant... here's a little list of intervals (just two notes, ignoring their positions within a chord for the time being) with how dissonant they are....

Unison - Open consonance Minor 2nd - Sharp Dissonance Major 2nd - Mild Dissonance Minor 3rd - Soft Consonance Perfect 4th - Consonance or dissonance Augmented 4th/Diminished 5th - Neutral/Restless Perfect 5th - Open Consonance Minor 6th - Soft Consonance Major 6th - Soft Consonance Minor 7th - Mild Dissonance Major 7th - Sharp Dissonance Octave - Open Consonance

so if you simply play a note and the one two semitones above it (major 2nd) - you'd hear mild dissonance. Not quite as much as with a minor 2nd, but it would feel a lot more complete and resolved if it were a minor or major third rather than a second.

All of these things are basically linked into the physics of music and what are called overtones... this is linked in with playing natural harmonics on a guitar- you'll notice that the lower sounding ones fit in very nicely with the sound of that string, but as you hit higher ones (eg. closer to the nut, usually) they will sound not so consonant.

However, with all things in Music you have to take context into account. If you take a dominant 7th chord and a minor 7th chord- C E G Bb (C7) All the intervals that are present in this chord: Major 3rd, Minor 3rd, Another minor third. A Perfect 5th, A DIMINISHED 5th. A Minor 7th.

C Eb G Bb (Cm7) A Minor 3rd, A major 3rd, Another Minor Third. A Perfect 5th, ANOTHER PERFECT 5th. A minor 7th.

You should notice that the makeup of intervals in the two chords is exactly the same APART from the diminished 5th in the dominant 7th chord. This diminished 5th gives the chord a restless quality that makes it want to "resolve" to an F Major chord (or F minor or D minor, depending on context) However the minor 7th is fairly happy as it is, since it's only got one interval that is dissonant (the mildly dissonant minor 7th). I'm guessung anyone who plays jazz in here qould probably play an F Dominant chord of some kind then a Bb chord having heard this Cm7 chord. Again though, it's all about context.

Of course it all relates to where you are in a key. Play a nice C major scale, up and down, one or two octaves. Then play an F- you should hear it wanting to go down to E. Play the scale again... now hit a B instead of an F.. hear that it wants to go up to C? Isn't music odd?

Oh, and give me vintage cheddar, preferably from canada, they make good cheddar over there. Also Mimollette (sp) from France is lovely.. as are Cheshire, Lancashire, Wenslydale (sp) etc. from Engalnd. Feta's nice too, Mozarella, Edam and Jarlsberg are pretty tasteless in my opinion, feta's better ;) Don't care much for soft cheeses though. Nor Double Gloucester (sp?)

For Adun: What is before or after exams? Pool tournaments or eating Greek salads?

Harvster: I don't know what foosball is, so I guess I don't play it... lol Or do you mean football? (which I don't play either)

Michelle: Thanks! This weekend I'm going to another tournament, with lot tougher competition, so I don't know how I will be doing. I'm happy as long as I give it my best shot, that way I'm always winning.

Kinger: I didn't think of that 3D/2D stuff, but you're right! As a child, you don't even react on that, it's perfectly normal. LOL

Kinger ... and what on earth is table football...? Soccer on a kitchen table? The players have to be pretty small then. LOL

I'm representing a club, but we don't have a team this year so it's all individual play. And no, I don't have a normal life... LOL All my friends (or most of them, at least) play pool as well AND listen to guitar music! LOL Things couldn't be better. Why did you stop playing, did you grow up and got yourself a real life? ;)

for adun - mmmmmmm cheeseburger.... mmmmm [in that longing Homer tone]... lol

your suspension analogy is absolutely spot on... the suspension itself is a transient state - a passing event that sits in between two conventional chords.... I like the idea of thinking of it as a 'bridge' between two chords - nicely put..

jcs - in 'mordern' text, the sus4 is root, 4th, 5th which works ok [despite not strictly adhering to the rules of harmoniy]... this however breaks down when you look at the sus2....

In 'modern' theory the sus2 is root, major 2nd, 5th... this is of course utter crap... and should be called x5 add9...

The reason that it is crap is because of the way a suspension works.... when a sus2 occurs in a 'real' suspenspension progression, the chord has no 'root' because it is suspended... When the suspension resolves the 2nd falls to the root... as you'll see from the description below, the 'modern' view of the sus2 chord is junk theory.. you just need to know that the chord books have mis-spelt the chord R-2-5 instead of 2-3-5 [which is what occurs in a suspened progression]

sus2 progression from IVb [b=1st inversion] to V7 in G major
IVb-------Vsus2 7-------V7
C/E-------Dsus2 7-------D7
the notes of the chord move as follows...
E------------F#-----------F#
C------------C------------C
G------------A-----------A
E-------------E-----------D <--Suspension occurs in this voice.

Sounds quite pretty... I think I'll use this one in my next smootchy number....

climber - your problem was using the theory as a method to right and play... and as you found out.. it just dont work.... always play and write from the heart... the knowledge is an aid especially when solving prolems [need to move from this key to this other key etc etc], also the theory gives new choices [scales to you over chords etc.. options]... but even so.. you must still create and perform from within.. within is where the true creative element exists..
Stu Clone - yes, sus2 and sus4 are dissonant...
in typical cases you are right.. dissonance is measured against a triad... although some would argue that the 7th is consonant... the thing you have to note here is the way chords are thought of. In mordern music [especially jazz] chord usage is very different to that of the original rules of harmony... i.e the big extentions up to the 13th.... also, the modern ear is much more accustomed to hearing 9th, 11th, 13th, accidentals, parallel 5ths / octaves etc etc - stuch that would appall Bach as crass... to keep things concise, I was taught to measure dissonance against the triad...

I would therefore say the the 7th is dissonant to the triad..

A minor chord is a triad.. so there is no dissonance.. the 3rd is consonant even when minor.

local - very nicely put...
