THeory posse - also, the awkward chords, ‘dominant chords’…. Again these follow exactly the same rules but with one main difference. The root note is the Dominant note [5th degree] from another major key…..
So, D7 [spoken D seven] means that the note D is the 5th from another key… it is the key of G…
D11 [spoken D eleven] would be D, F#, A, C, E, G [from the scale of G major]
B9 therefore comes from the key of E major [E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#] and would therefore be B, D#, F#, A, C#]
G7 add 13 comes from the key of C major [C, D, E, F, G, A, B] and is G, B, D, F, E

A few things to note….
‘voicing’ the notes do not have to appear in order – a 3rd can be a higher pitch than a 9th etc…
in many cases, you will have to leave out some notes because it is just not possible / practical to play them all – the first option to leave out is the 5th, then the root, then the 3rd [as it is often ‘implied’ by the music before and after the chord]…. At the end of the day, what notes are dropped is a matter of personal taste / judgement….
when you are playing in an ensemble [like a band] then you have more options as to which notes you should drop because you have a bassist, keys, guitarist etc….
a bassist playing E and a guitarist playing G^7 the an overall sound of Em9…… food for thought….

So to prove to me that I’ve not messed up your brains too much try working out the notes of these chords:

G7 add 13, A9, F11, Em9, Am7 add 11, Dm add 9, Am11, G7 add 9, C11, A7 add 13…..

This should not be too tough so long as you are aware of the scale to use when working out the notes…….

Calculate and enjoy……

PhyrgianDominant - Yeah, Joe's answers were pretty short. I meant to say something about that. I think it's the interviewer's fault...bad questions.

Who cares (and who cares who pointed it out)? At least we get an update from Joe! His head was always (and still seems to be!) firmly screwed on, he gives a shit about us, and he's forever humble. Bad interviewers aside, I'm glad Nick posted the link. It's good to hear from Joe in whatever way!

WHAT INTERVIEW?!? ahhh...found it.

JBlaze: HAHAHA hilarious. x2!

MrNick: THAT is funny. Good call!

You guys all crack me up. Sorry Clarky, but can't be stuffed ready the theory today, too much conflict in the T2J for me to concentrate.

Phrygian Dominant: whatever you do, don't carry the pizza sideways back to the car. Brief lapse of intelligence...I had a Bacon Double Cheeseburger Smoosh for tea. (Austin)...and yes, we also learned the "when it sounds 'e'" clause. So technically the "weird society" is not an exception to the rule, however it is a true statement, you are correct!

"Is this the room for an argument?"

"No it's getting-hit-on-the-head lessons in here!"

"Waaah!"

"He's good! You could learn a thing or two from him..."

OOOOOOOH!!!

"with a twist of some kind"

Does this create any sense of anticipation from anyone else?

(ala Firebat) "You('ve) got my attention..."

later all, BEN

PS I'm talking about Joe mentioning another live DVD if you were in the dark...

PPS His answers did seem very brief, but when I read write-ups of interviews I've had, I'm always annoyed with the way my answers have been simplified to give the same meaning as what I said, but that they appear arrogant or rude (not rude=dirty, the other rude), or hide any detail the reader would have wanted to hear.

Austin: The set list is almost the same as the European tour, we had the addition of New Last Jam. It was Joe the whole three hours, & oh, almost forgot... he played Going Down as well! It was really cool for him to play most of my favourite songs!

Appoggiatura - Welcome to the site!

Narface - That sounds cool. New Last Jam was played in Europe, by the way. It's neat that you got to hear Going Down, though. I love that song.
OpHeSiS - I might be able to go to the Anaheim show. It's a big might, though. I've been to the Grove Theater before. It's a really nice place...definately one of my favorite venues. The floor is set up like a dining room. There are a bunch of tables everywhere, each holding 12 people. You eat an overpriced dinner and then see the concert. The sound at the venue is perfect. You'll have a great time.

...Austin...
