HI JOE !
now that i´m a pretty fresh part of this community, i wanna tell you that my one and only concert with you in 1993, NEU-ISENBURG, GERMANY, is still present in my mind. not really because of your sonic performance which blew me away - no - i got some sort of mindprints concerning your FACIAL EXPRESSION while you were playing. even a DEAF guy would have been able to get a ticket in your sonic world. that was really amazing to watch your face as an optical converter. every power-chord, every fiddling, bending, each flageolet, glissando or what ever was visible in your face ! you´re really connected to each single tone.
what´s left to say ? hope you´re keep goin´with your excellent songwriting, your ideas and inspiration. and never be afraid to make a thing sound too SIMPLE!´cause even my son KORBINIAN, 3 1/2, is gettin´into it !!
thanks for all you´ve done, volker.

A-GAIN TO JOE.
what about a G3 with nuno and dweezil as a tribute to papa frank´s 10th day-of-death this year ????????
the ENSEMBLE MODERN, FRANKFURT, which were recording and performing YELLOW SHARK with frank and for which i´m working as an audio engineer, will perform in L.A. on dec.6th at the ZAPPA FESTIVAL !!
the guys might love it - don´t you think & do so:-) ? well i don´t know how familiar you are with the two guys, but it definitely would be (not only) my favourite line up to gain for. O.K. - i admit - STEVE could be introduced as special guest this night to make an extraordinary G4-extension gig...
so - any plans for the festival ??
good times ahead,
volker

nick - a point worth noting is that most of us are in bands that have a singer... this means that only around 10% of your playing is solos.... the rest is riffing and grooves.... yet many folks spend less than 10% of their practice working on chords, riffing, timing, phrasing - which is essentially 'the day job'....
Also, the way that you approach a solo and the note selection used is directly connected to your chord knowledge.. this about being aurally aware of how notes interact with each other...
Artanis - I think a mistake that non-players and the less experienced players make is in assuming that very fast runs and tricks [harmonics, divebombs etc] are the 'cleverer' aspects of playing purely because it can sound so spectacular.. In many cases this is just not true... The nu-metal guys riffing is rock solid and very tight... the riffs they play are not always as simple as they seem [which is what you'll find when taking a closer look]... Even if you look back into the 70's and study Steve How, Steve Hackett, Jeff Beck, Robert Fripp you'll find less 'spectacular' playing however it is often far more difficult than you'd expect... Don't forget that it is these great players from the 70's that mentored the likes of Satch and Vai etc......
Ovation - wow... planting my name like that in amongst such company... if my head swells I'll be smashing it into the sides of door frames.... lol
For Shedz at an Exhibition I am trying to do the right thing by not rushing... but it is all taking longer than I'd like... I was hoping to be done with the writing last August so I'm behind schedule.. but I'm also aware that I really want to put my best foot forward... If I took my absolute best work to Favoured Nations and they tell me to walk then I can live with that... it's either not good enough or not what they're looking for... If I give them something I knocked up on the quick and hope to get signed and then fail... I'd end up beating up on myself over it for ever...
I can only handle failure if I've put in 100% or more

clarky,,thats true..i write instrumental songs..but i spend time writing and re-writing the rythmn, i dont concentrate on the melody much till i know thats the rythmn i want, cos its the rythmn that gives the feel, groove and overall sound of the song. yes the melody is the bit you listen to and sounds cool to play stuff to do that, but i spend most of my writing time, doing the rythmn - that gives the song depth, once the rythmn is sorted, the melody sometimes writes itself
ovation1..yeah..several people told me..now i should know who it is :)

Leanna it used to be PhrygianDominant, but most people didn't realise it was a musical mode and thought it was some kind of domination thing LOL, and besides pretty much everyone called me PhryDom anyway, so I just changed it ;-)
the extremist thanks so much for that, I really appreciate you sharing it. Maybe I'll try sending him a demo, he might want to do some vocals for me ;-)
YaYo... miaow! LOL
Benny I think their fans were shocked by it, but tons of mums n lovers and the like bought it over here :-/ I'm more shocked by Edge Of The World... right up YaYo's comment's street ;-)

EXTREMIST - Man, if you can play those MR lead lines, i'm very envious, have you got an IUMA site or similar ?
YA YO GAKK - Man you kill me ! lmao
DCK - Perhaps they closed the site down for attracting undesireables ;-) btw Tony McAlpine rocks and what can you say about AH ? His stretches are abnormal ? lol
OVATION - Bro' don't spend your money on the truck to look cool, living in Okinawa looks pretty cool from here already !
I've not come across TSO, thanks for the tip i'll look them up when i'm out buying next ;-)
CLARKY - You take all the time it takes man, your forthcoming album is probably my most awaited purchase! Are you using any of the material off the iuma site? I'd love to hear a well mixed version of Talking to Stone, and curiously enough it was the backing track that stood out !
PHRYDOM - Are you building more guitars dude ? I suppose that it will keep you busier than just ordering new gear off the net - lol Have you been recording any new stuff of late ?

r6r yeah I've decided to try and build a neck. I've got a huge slab of padauk here for the body, but I've never tried a neck. I got some ebony blanks on Ebay, but still need some fretwire & a trussrod. And yeah - it'll certainly keep me busy!!! I've got 16 partially written tracks so far, but my IDE controller card died so I have to replace that before I can get access to my newer stuff... ahh the joys of trusting your stuff to a computer! LOL. You got anything to share with us yet? You could send it to me and I'll put it online of you like...?

PHRYDOM - I'm getting there dude, if you saw my comments to CLARKY re:recording that was no shit, definitely time to re:record, i'd say that i've got two finished concepts that need bulling up and formatting and two works in progress. Don't worry though man, when the first CD gets burnt it's heading to you for comment (even if it's only two tracks!) - after all it would only be blues without your input ;-)
