Melody vs. Jam - In my opinion, if you're trying to make sales you have to lean more towards melody.... Though, doin a solid jam live is pretty hard to beat... Still, it is possible to make a cd with some good jams, look at Clapton's old band Blind Faith. I haven't heard all of the tracks but a ton of it is just jammin... Either way, if it's got some good licks, I can usually get into it...

Hmm... sorry for using the word "jam" multiple times, I can't think of anything to replace it.... mick

Guitarcake: Yes! Squiers are great! I have one myself! Baltic blue. Very smooth. I've already started customizing mine. I have new string trees, chrome knobs and I blocked the tremolo. I have 5 tremolo springs attached to it with velcro straps tied around the 2nd and 4th spring to eliminated spring vibrations from the strings. I plan on getting a white moto pickguard and put on a Seymour Duncan JB Model and Jazz Model. I also have to point out, my strat has exceptionally wonderful harmonics!!
Speaking about band names... yeah, Japanese bands have funny names. ie. Shocking Lemon... ha! I love thinking of funny band names. I know, lets start listing the names of bands that we have been in. I was in 'FUT', 'Three Asains & A White Guy', 'The Peach Heads', 'Ian's Band' & 'Akira's Band'. There! Your turn!

Crystal Planet - All mostly the key of E minor. First starts off with a B phrygian patterned run (4 up, 4 down, 6 up, repeat on next string). Then I go into an Em7th string skipping arpeggio. Then some do some tapping but changed to Dorian as i'm using C# instead of C. Then I end off with an Em7th two octave sweep ascending and descending all the way. I'm actually not happy with the video. My hand started to give out in the latter takes. I had to accept what I already had.

If anyone wants to check my new video clip http://yngvaitriani.tripod.com/ - I'll probably replace it with a better one eventually.

Nick - Oh my God, I did it!!!!!!!!!!!!! I made a coffee-making metronome!!!!!!!! I was feeling particularly inspired one morning just after breakfast, so I fetched my roll of gaffa tape and my metronome and brought it into the kitchen (you can see what's coming can't you? lol) and I stuck the clicking machine to the water boiling machine. Behold! A coffee making metronome!!!!!!!! I was gonna take a photo but I didn't have any film in my camera and it would have taken a while for me to get round to having it developed anyway. Maybe another day...

Clarky - Yeah, man. Real lager. Regardiong Foster's - it makes me laugh every time. I work in my local Wetherspoon's and you get all these townie animals coming in who think they're hard and get shit faced on the stuff. It's like water that's been stood next to lager for a bit too long. And the best bit is, on the barrels it says "Brewed in the U.K.". Think Australian drink Australian my ass... Regarding your as kicking courtesy of Mr. Nick, I'd pay good money for a show like that. You're tiny. He'll kick yo ass, punk!!! lol... Fancy an arm wrestle at our next jam? lol lol

JSC1 - Do you like Raspberry Jam Delta-V? There's not exactly a melody in that one that I can hear, but I think it's a wicked tune. Might be the groove though - if the melody's not there a decent groove can carry something a long way, I guess...

just wondering if anyone actually wants to see this band in action, if so post this message your selfs so that there is a greater possibility that joe might see it cos this line up is the best ever!

Guitar - Satch (obviously!) Bass - Les Claypool (Primus, sausage, and many, many others!) Drums - Micheal Schak (not sure about spellign, but he's damn good!)

So if joe could, i dunno, make a few calls this band could be out making records, doing gigs and being damn amazing!

What do you think???

master yoda Show us a picture sometime. Methinks that to invent that, you must have had a wee bit too much of the old fosers water thenight before.

Artanis I Do you drink Castlemaine in Australia, or is that just as much of a joke as Fosters?

guitarcake By the time you've got bored of your car, you won't have any money left to spend on guitars!

crushing day do you have any of Petrucci outside of dream theater, like with G3 or anything? Or of DT doing Petrucci songs? (ie ones he wrote not DT ones he wrote the words for)

It's Eric Clapton's birthday today. Happy birthday Eric.

guitarcake again The last squier I tried the back of teh neck was horrible. It had almost no varnish on it whatsoever, and this was one of the expensive squiers. You can't complain for £35, though, that's basically a guitar for free.

my take on the jam vs melody. 1) you cant beat a good melody hook 2)if the jam has dynamics.. that could be the hook 3)in a live situation jamming is better to listen to than recorded. 4)melody=money? what are you guys talking about. do u have any idea haw many great melodic guitarist you will never hear (oh yeah and they are poor)? 5) stop fighting and keep jamming....... at the end of the day all that matters is that you are happy with your own progress as a musician.and your growth as a person.. ) i play in an improv band , we never rehearse only react to each other , the first thing we go for is GROOVE. if you can get em dancin.. then they will listen. them dancin =money

Hey Joe

What's going down with Ned Evet at the moment?, is he still on tour with you or has he got an album out?. I have just worte a song and I am recording it in every now and then, it has taken about 7 or 8 days now. When you go into the studio to record it is it hard to get it right with in the time you have?.

Cheers

Dave Wren.

JsClone1: I've been getting those types of sessions, because about 2 yrs ago I sent out a bunch of demos to studios. One of the people I sent it to is an up and comming composer called Colin O'Malley. He originally called me up to do a Universal commercial, because he said that he liked how I was able to play melodically and serve the song(from what he heard on my demo). We've been woking together ever since, and any time he gets a job that needs guitar, I get a call. It has less to do with ability to play guitar. I know that my real abilities that stand out are playing very clean and melodicly, those attributes help get me sessions. Just find a studio or composer that needs help and I'm sure if I can get sessions you can get three times as many.

Master Yoda - It's a progressive melody as opposed to just an improv'd jam. You can whistle it the whole way through.

OCP - We'll have to see if I can write anything nice and melodic like you. Come to think of it, you do play clean. Very clean. Your recordings are immaculate.

OCP You're lucky to have them give you notice considering the only instrumental music people want to hear is in commercials, and movies etc.
I think people like the instrumental music more than they realize though, it's just somthing people don't go to the record store to look for. I would suggest to get the sponser to give you a credit during the commercial if it's televised. Getting your name out is very important.

greg - glad you like the theory posse stuff. The best way to learn that stuff is slowly. Don't try to take it all in at a single sitting... If you have questions just shout in T2J or in COE.

http://members.aol.com/noisynoisy/paulclark.html

that's an old pic of me and my Strat on tour in 1994.. first gig of the tour.. The Astoria London - the same hallowed ground as shredded on by Satch and Vai - what an honour for me it was... I was more nervous about that than the gig itself.. lol

The UV7 is made to a higher spec than the RG7xxx - better pickups, more elaborate finishing, it's wired differently, but I think the woods are the same.

My custom 7 has an ebony fingerboard [UV7 = rosewood], mine also has flourecent dissappearing pyramid inlays [on ebony it looks awesome]. I don't have the 'pearly' binding [not my thing really]. My 7 is wired a little differently too - it has 'booster' circuitry that make it a little hotter if needed...

It's not here yet but I'm expecting news that it'll be shipped very soon now..

Yoda - funny - lmao...

where's your gig?
