Can't sleep/ Just a reminder to all you PS2 owners: ENTER THE MATRIX goes on sale tommorow everywhere. If you are in San Francisco support THE PLAYSTATION store at METREON and go buy one at 10am when they open.

Cool new from your PLAYSTATION employee here and you all get to hear it first: PS2 is having a price drop. As of this past Tuesday SONY announced that the price is $179.99!! ! Also at E3 on Tuesday Sony announced that they are entering the handheld game market with thier own system to be available somtime at the end of 2004.

Hope everyone has a great day! I have jury duty: WHOOPIE!!!

Joe: Hope everything is cool with you. I just bought The Extremist and heard CRYIN'. Man........you really make me want to pick up my guitar and practice so I can make music like that. Amazing job! And Doug Doppler is one heck of a player, good job!!

ovation - all this talk of Marie and Daisy... jeez I have an album to complete and I'm all distracted now... I must focus on the task at hand... but my bairly adequate psychic defences are crumbling..

ibanick - If you publish 'all' my posts and publish it as a music book it'll make for pretty interesting reading... chapter 1 - fundamental principles of music, chapter 2 - battering a woman with a jerry can and a sink whilst taking her from behind, chapter 3 - the art of modulation, chapter 4 - blowing lager and kebab chunks in a taxi made somple, chapter 5 - chord inversions and extensions, chapter 6 - car park fights and general weirdness, chapter 7 - how to be a gonzo shredder... lol

The clever part would be finding a university that would make this into a degree course...

"it's a fine line between stupid and clever"....

So I keep a foot on both sides of this line... lmao..

When the urgency for my writing and recording has tailed off a little then I'll carry on with the theory posse stuff from where I left off...

The modes were to the best of my knowledge named after Greek tribes.. but not by classical scholars.. the modes and modal music pre-dates the classical era by many hundreds of years.. their origin is, I'm led to believe, not well understood.

phryg - think of it as using an effect pedal... maybe you don't want a flanger running through the whole tune but the is a moment when you need one, so you turn it on, do your thing, and turn it off and carry on with the song...

Twisting time around by using cross rhythmic evices is the same... you are momentarily creating an effect to contrast the overall rythmic meter or theme... so you turn it on.. and turn it off....

or maybe this analogy is just making shit worse... should I just shut up and point you at someone clever to explain it properly.. lol

Stu Clone - your description of cross rhythm is spot on... a picture is a thousand words...

the the normal 6/8 count is
one - and - er, two - and - er

the cross rhythm count for 6/8 becomes
one - and, two - and, three - and

but note, this is only one cross rhythmic method...

mr manzer... long time no hear from....
yoda - no probz bro... I'll talk to the authorities and sort out a date... I'll pick you up too...
trutina - the reason, I think, that the new mix has better 'separation', is that I re-compressed and re-eq'd everything... working out 'where' each individual instrument lives in the audio specrum is quite an art - one I'm beginning learn.. you can make an instrument appear to be louder without changing it's volume by messing with the eq alone.. I've always been aware of this but I've never had to do it for myself... 'cos that's the sound engineers job and up 'till now my recording methods have always been very crude... the AW16 has forced me to look deeper into this side of things so that I really can get the best out of it.... as time goes on I'll be getting much better at mixong down and mastering... it's fun stuff to learn actually...
Artanis - gettig back to the original speed is tricky, but it's just a matter of using the smae mechanism - but in reverse... and then practicing the hell out of it with the band....

To whoever was talking about Jonathan Mover and mechanical monkeys (I think I recommended those for G3), here's a quote from Jeff Campitelli's bio on this website, Jeff plays those drums better than any motorized monkey you've ever seen

I heard another thing on the radio about the "new" GNR. Scott Weiland is now officially the singer of the band, which also includes Slash, Duff, and Matt from GNR. They've signed a contract and their band's name is Reloaded. I look forward to hearing some stuff from them...

ianjf - I don't know how Joe's crew did the webcast stuff, but the webmaster of this site has said several times that the quality of the footage isn't suitable for release.

wazaaaa / ianjf - Eric Caudieux has a lot to do with the EOC sound. Joe met him while working on the G3 DVD. So it's probably a project that Joe became very interested in after meeting Eric.

chris, thanks for all of that info...I had a feeling it def had to do with micing techniques. Right now I record using a jap ds-1 and 6100 has well...the tone is smooth...but I'd like to make it a bit smoother...I think we're only using sm57s i the studio too, I'll have to see if they have any valve mics...
