Austin/Do The Stu & greg m,

Double Bass = Upright Bass.
picture of an upright
they're big mofo's... the scale is around 40-42", meaning that, in the distance it would usually take to play the first minor third on the fingerboard (open to 3rd fret), you can play a minor 2nd (first "fret") comfortably.

check out http://www.stick.com/
it's THE stick resource. literally ;)

upright? i don't own one... i've had them in my possession before for months at a time, and i plunked on 'em at school often, but they're too expensive to just go and get one for all the money i spend on other things.

Fusion - The new tune is cool man! Wish I could hear the whole thing though...

Pete Mulas - Congrats on movin' nicely up the charts... I saw you were also at #14 on "Easy Listening" and "Other"... Good job!

Here's another thought for an opening song for a Joe concert.... what about Time Machine? I think that might be a good choice as well.

962 - I read somewhere that Pull Me Under ends suddenly on purpose. The song deals with death, and the sudden stop is an example of how sudden death can be.

trutina - My best friend has a copy of Brain Droppings... I love it.
Axmanjr - Ah, but it is available for download. Head on over to PhryDom's website, http://www.sharpfour.com/. He had it posted there at one point...
PhryDom - Happy 1k! :-)
Stu Clone - Thanks for the info. I was pretty sure that they were the same thing, but once greg m asked about it, well, I wasn't so sure anymore...LOL.

Fussion - I’ve checked out your tunes.. here are my thoughts / observations..

Lost at sea: the first section is a very nice idea.. you should have made more of it thematically speaking.. it’s like a lost opportunity as it moves very quickly into the heavy section.. the heavy section contains some interesting themes and harmony.. the taps and legato runs are nice but be careful of your timing..

SFC: this is also a very interesting idea.. however it suffers from the age old shredder complex / insecurities.. “I must not allow more than 5 seconds to pass without cramming in a big lick in case this is the only thing someone will ever hear of me so I must prove that I can tear it up”.. you have a nice theme and nice vibrato, so it’s ok to hang on to a nice melody and express it.. it’s like sex.. do you dive in there and go at it hammer and tong for 5 minutes leaving her thinking “great while it lasted but is that it?” would it not be better to start soft and expressive, building little by little, teasing with the occasional moment to show more and better is to follow. Be smart and show great class by not allowing the climax to occur too soon.. draw it out and make it an emotional journey building to a definite and well thought out climax.. think of For the Love of God and Crying.. it can be very cool to play simple but very expressive lines.. it shows restraint and maturity.. let the event unfold.. know when to make the orgasm occur.. choose your moment well.. it starts with such a very nice melody.. it really is worth developing into something much larger.. also, a little thing I spotted is that either your 1st string is quite flat or your intonation needs looking at on that string…

Fussion - the last two tracks

There’s a Rocker: the ‘fizzing’ is distortion on the recording where the level was way too high [I’ve done it myself many times].. take as much care over setting up the recording as the composition and playing.. I’m not really a fan of this track.. it’s obviously an improvisation as it is very disjointed.. the long notes are almost crying out “I’ll hang on to this one until I’ve figured out what to do next” so the phasing is a little odd sounding [unless of course this phasing was intentional and I’ve understood it all wrong.. but that’s how it sounds to me].. the key to doing great improvisation that sounds stable and creative is to be compositional with it.. like the sex thing earlier.. yes you are be creative ad hoc so there’s a fair amount of “let’s try stuff and see how it turns out” [I so wanted to use the phrase “suck it and see”.. oh well done I’ve it now.. lmao] .. the point here is to at least have an idea of where you want to take it.. yes you are going on an improvisational voyage of discovery but have half an idea of where you want to take it.. listen to the backing track first a few times without playing over it.. let your inner ear loose on the whole thing.. it’ll alter the outcome and influence your choice of notes.. my may even end up threading a little theme through it.. this is improvisation but with a compositional twist.. you’re not just tearing up on the neck but composing on the spot.. this is the stuff that guys like Vai, Zapper and many jazzers do mind-numbingly well..

CIFH: again.. this is a little disjointed.. I can almost here you thinking of where to go next.. so essentially the comments above apply to this track too..

To comment overall: you are without doubt a very good player in the making.. the technique is largely there, you have some very interesting ideas [but you could maybe better exploit them].. you are clearly developing a style of your own which is a very good thing.. maybe sit back and take a little more time over everything.. relax.. don’t rush in it.. including when it comes to setting up the recording.. the first two tracks definitely sound better prepared.. your playing style can be very angular at times which is nice for a flash lick but doesn’t make for a memorable hook.. at times try applying the rule “if you can’t hum it then it won’t stick”.. if you over embellish melodies with angular tapped / legato runs then you’ll run the risk of becoming one dimensional.. maybe try listening to other types of players in addition to the guy you listen to now so that your overall style grows more width.. great players are not always fast ones..

I’m not trying to dissect you and pull you apart.. I’m just being very honest and trying to explain in detail your music and playing style as it appears to me.. and I hope that my comments can be of use to you as you develop.. take heart that there are many very good attributes to your playing.. personally I just think that if you took at little more time and care in preparation that the results would improve ten fold…

Do not give in………………..

Hey Joe! I can't wait for the G3 concert in Atlanta at the Tabernacle! Malmsteen was a good choice, will there be another show with eric johnson, ever? I can't wait to see you live, I live in Augusta so I have never made it to a show of yours or any musician close to your calibur except a guitar clinic of steve vai and some others in Atlanta. I'll e-mail a list for the essentials.

It's Sat Ree Ann Eee is as close as I can make it lol. And no problems, it's a common error, especially with dj's and announcers.

Sixstringmaster - Joe pronounces his name as Sat-Uh-Ree-Nee on the welcome message on this website, but he's just joking.

The most common pronunciation I've heard is Sat-Tree-On-Eee.

However, I've heard a lot of PA announcers pronounce his name as Saht (rhymes with "hot")-Tree-On-Eee, so I'm thinking that that may be how Joe pronounces the name himself. I'm not sure, though. I say Sat-Tree-On-Eee myself.

pretty sure he says more as a "hot" sat kinda thing... trying to think back to Satch Tapes, could be wrong since it's just memory...

"Dear Mr. Joseph (Soht)Satriani"

"Sat"-triani is the Wisconsin way to say it. lol

DEATH CUBE K!!!

you're seeing Steve Smith??? Couldya ask him about the prospect of perhaps another GHS album? Or better yet, tour dates that GHS might try and eventually get to?

Austin,
donchya love how that works? I always knew how to do all this cool stuff, then someone asks me to stand and deliver. hahahahahahaha.

oh hey, just remembered somethin... when Boyd (do you still need to talk to me? I haven't gotten any emails, so I'm assuming whatever it was could wait or is already past) was over at my place, I told him I was workin on a new medley, but couldn't think of what to put in it, he recommended I check it out w/ you,
whaddya think?

The ones I've already done (I'd like to not repeat material) were:
Moonlight Sonata - part of Abbey Road - Flow My Tears - Peanuts - Count Zero - Sexually Active Tapping - Country Music,

Part of an original tune that goes into - The Simpsons Theme - Nostalgia - Wrong and Strong - Star Spangled Banner.

The one I'm working on so far has the Inspector Gadget Theme and Borg Sex.

For those that just happened to read through this post and wanna hear those tracks, lemme know and I'll be sure to drop you a line when my super amateur style demo CD is finished... I'm waiting for one track from a fellow T2J'er, one from a dude in L.A. (he recorded me at a live thing) and then I'll do some quick stuff from here.

edit again: post 444. does that mean something? sure seems like it should.
