looks like we're gonna have to figure out what effects he's been using for this one ;)
ooh! that's certainly a question for rockline!

so far all i can make out that i can think of is the peavey, the seven string, the fulltone, a crybaby, a whammy, and monster cable...

Jonathan Stuver

That is a ripper.

Well I wish I could go and see this G3 with Stuve Vai and Yngwie Malmstuen.

Austin: I hope you aren't referring to any of Garbage's recent stuff. That is pure Garbage in my mind. I liked their 90s stuff. First heard them off the Romeo & Juliet movie, and their album Version 2.0 was not-arf-bad either. The latest album was as crap as No Doubt's latest. I was so cranky when I heard them.

They're Scottish aren't they?

StupaaDave: Make sure you listen closely to Secret Prayer!!! BTW, I recommend Alien Love Secrets or Passion & Warfare. Keep in mind there are a few tracks on P&W you'll probably think are a bit "eh"

StuF Dean, Line-6 makes a thing called a GuitarPort for $169.

Musician's Friend has a great deal going on a GuitarPort Pack. It includes a Line-6 GuitarPort, OPL MM5 electric guitar(a very decent inexpensive guitar), pack of Ernie Ball strings, guitar strap, picks and some cheesy looking headphones for $199.

Sounds like just the thing your looking for.check it out at musiciansfriend.com

Has anybody(in the states) been watching the Blues series on PBS?

HOLA Joe! My husband Jerry has got me hooked on your music. He's been a fan of yours since he was 17 years old living in Cuernavaca, Mexico (He's 30 now.) Jerry has always said that he'll be able to die in peace once he sees you in concert. And ofcourse since I know that he loves your music so much, I wanna buy tickets to your new G3 Tour. The only unfortunate thing is that the day you come out here to the LA Area, on October 18th, is the same exact day that KISS/Aerosmith concert comes here too. And he already has tickets for that concert. HOW UNFORTUNATE, but I'm sure you'll come out here again, right? Also, do you plan on playing at the Forum in SF? I'm from the Bay Area and I wouldn't mind taking my husband to the forum for a little "love thing." Ciao, Suzie Hernandez de Villanueva

DXMG - I'd like to see pictures of the wind chime, whenever you get them online. Thanks.

stuArtanis I - Yeah, I like the first two Garbage albums more than their third. They're recording their fourth album now, and, from what I've heard, it'll supposedly be more like the first two. Although whenever a band has an album that doesn't sell well, they always say that their next one will go back to their early sound. So, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Shirley Manson is from Scotland, but the rest of the band is from the US.

Knightman - Joe played in Australia in the early 90s. He hasn't been back since then.

It's tough to keep up with everything here if you're not a regular visitor, but the "mark read" feature should help you out. Click that link under the last post that you read.

xicasuzie - Hi. I'm in the Los Angeles area right now as well... Aerosmith is my favorite band (Joe Satriani is #2), but I decided to skip the Aerosmith / Kiss tour. I lucked out, because now I'll be at the Greek Theatre for G3. I almost bought Aerosmith tickets back when they went on sale, but I thought it'd be better for me to wait until they did a tour on their own. Have fun at that show...I know it'll rock.

...Austin...

Clarky thanks for that bro. It's all too easy these days to use the technology just cos it's there. Let's all go back to quarter inch eight tracks!

Austin I emailed you, and thanks! Oh, and yeah Garbage are pretty good. Great production. Benny Shirley's Scottish, the other guys were all successful producers before Garbage, AFAIK, and I *think* they're American. Red hair is definitely a welcome return ;-)

WebMaster in your Chime stuff do you use Darwin? I first started playing with it in 2000, but it was awful (serves me right for using Windows I guess... lol) anyway, I've been asked to help put up some independent movies online, and they want to go with Darwin if they can (I hear it's much better these days)... would you recommend it?

Cheers all... Dave

canchito Joe played FIABD in G3 so I don't see why he shouldn't play Love thing.

Strange Stu drinking, LOL! We're stuing Joe's old bassist, Stu Hamm, who seems to have got quite a bit of support round here..

sclone Steve may not actually be holding the guitar he always used to use on the G3 shoot, as its falling apart. Look at the In G3 96 Joe used a brown guitar, in Crystal planet you can see him using a rainforest guitar. Look at the back of SBM to see lots of his guitars.

SupaaDave Passion and Warfare, definitely. Failing that, Fire Garden or Alive in an Ultra World.

migupais Good to see you around. Have fun with the coaching, but don't stop practising - it would be a shame to see that JS900 go to waste!

achoo In your "achoo options" on the satriani.com website, go to "edit/add show attendance" and add yourself to the list of people attending the concert you're attending. These names will be put into a draw and if you win, you will be emailed about your backstage pass a few days before the show.

OME If I enter my email adress into the battle of the bands thing, like I have to to vote, will they spam me?

Stu Clone Things I don't have are Not of this Earth, Time Machine and LISF.

Leanna Are you slowly turning into wolf2?

Wolf2 Why don't you change your name to Wolf stu LOL? Hahaha Wolf Stew, I bet you wouldn't like being stewed!

Ovation - many years ago I did learn pretty much most of Crying.. When it comes to recording songs by another I never really see the point in playing it exactly as it was originally done... 'cos it's been done before....
I used to learn entire songs - the riffs, the solos etc.. yes it's good to learn by example but I used to study what I'd learned to.. how the solo worked in terms of harmony and phrasing...
these days I no longer learn complete songs... no point really.. if I hear something I can now generally visualise on the neck.. If I can do this then I can usually play it... from time to time I'll hear a lick, a trick or something that'll really catch my attention so I'll take a close look at it and figure it out... but I'll most likely not learn the whole song.. with the time I have available these days I tend to spend most of my playing time writing my own music and developing my own method...

talking of my own music, here's the latest on the Raft... I checked out the solos thus far... bad news on the first movement...
I recall a really shite song with the chorus "I can feal it coming in the air tonight .... oh lord..."
yes there was something in the air the night I cut that solo.... electrostatic radiation.....
"oh lord.... I didn't gate hard enough...."
shit sgnal to noise ration.... I'm having to re-cut the solo....

I have the 1st half of the 1st movement done so far..

the upside is that it has come out even better... more energy... more substance..

a blessing in disguise....

Knightman - I'm a leftie too... I play RG470L.. they're pretty good guitars... the only thing that lets them down is the pick-ups and the bridge... but it's not an expensive guitar...
the pickups lack definition... that's easily sorted.. I put PAF PRO's on mine and I really like them... the TRS bridge can be made to work very well but time is against you... the base plate is made of a soft [lost cost] metal with a hard outer coating... once the based plate edges have worn through the hard skin you'll be down to the soft stuff... so you'll start to get tuning issues.. both of my RG's are over 10 years old... both of them are on their 2nd bridge.. my Strat however has a real Floyd Rose [15 years old as shows no signs of wear and is still as stable as it was when new]... My main RG470 [Wrath] now needs a new bridge again... now that the Edge is available in a left hand version I'm toying with the idea of getting of those or maybe just avoid Ibanez parts altogether and replace it with a real Floyd where the base plate is made out of high quality and very hard metal.

Luckily for you.. the RG550L now exists... it has the Edge bridge fitted as standard... it is a very very good value for money guitar... if you get one of those and put nice pickups on it you'll have a very nice guitar indeed...

PhrygDom - 1/4" 8 track????? no thanx.... lmao... I'll stick with my 16 track digital... lol with which I'm very very happy.... however, I use it with the 'tape' mentality rather than like a PC..
here's a little food for thought regarding the use of 'copy' for backing tracks....

imagine this.... you are recording a song... you are cutting the riffs... you cat a real nice version and paste it in all the appropriate places in the song... yes everyhing sounds uniform and tidy .... but what's missing????????
think Van Halen, think Randy Rhodes.... think of the little licks'n'tricks that you throw in to a rythm part here and there ad hoc. The odd lick here... the natural harmonic divebomb there.. the little moments of vitality that makes each section indivual but based over the same theme... stuff like "I'm The One" by Van Halen.... this is the stuff that gives a good song even more character and excitement...

and this is the stuff that 'copy'n'paste' wipes out and makes a track sound inorganic....

I think of music and playing as a living breathing thing...
over use of technology can in my opinion stiffle the life-force within the player / playing

I jus' got two wordz t'say 'bout diss

keep it real ! ! !

Greg - I think he used to be called ovation because he drives an 5.0L Ovation Pickup truck.. lmao

clarky copying, pasting and using the same recording in different parts of the song is definitely wussing out. BTW on your picture on the David Cross website, does Pride have its floyd rose then? Can you put one of them on without fitting a locking nut, or did you retrofit a locking nut on Pride?
