Dear Joe,
I just got back from the show at the House of Blues in Orlando. I have to say that it was the best performance I have ever seen. I saw You, Steve, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (filling in for Eric Johnson) at the Fox in Atlanta during the first G3 tour, but this latest show was superior. Awesome acoustics and nearly a flawless display of ability. I did notice your expression during that tapping thing but it looked like the intonation was off on the guitar to me. I wish I could see every show you guys do. Yngwe was awesome too. He just has it as he always did. I will continue to be inspired by both yourself and Steve with your unsurpassed abilities of technique and styles. You were certain to thank all in the audience after the show and I would like to say THANK YOU for a great performance. You guys are truly guitar legends in your own time and I will look forward to the next show.
Oh yeah, thanks for the pick.
Respectfully, Doug

I am all that is Glockenspiel ;)!
Michelle - Your washboard skills are an inspiration to the next generation of board scratchers! lol...And beware, the repercussions of the evil sakaay monsters is harsh! Ovation - Uh oh... the triplet 16th's have unleashed! Phrygian style! The magazine, "Cowbell For the Practicing Musician", called me up and asked if you were free to give a lesson on diminished "bell-peggios" for there next issue. I said only if they pay us royalties! lol...Oh.. the Taco Bell Classics! Good choice, that'll be the encore!
Ok, too much fun! I'm off, night all!

Holy SHIT! over 20 pages in 1 weekend...I will NOT be reading everything lol. Well, here goes. Well, I just got back from Boca from a weekend of guitar watching and playing. Friday night, me and Susan (my girlfriend) went to the G3 show in West Palm Beach, FL. I have to say, I wasn't as blown away as I expected. First of all, we had front row tickets, sitting about 3 feet from the stage, which would have been great. BUT, security was pretty much nonexistant, and people were shoving in front of my seat the whole time, which severely cheesed me off. In my opinion, if you pay for a front row seat and are lucky enough to get online and try REALLY hard to get it, you deserve it. If you have 20th row seats, you have 20th row seats. Plus, Susan got pushed around by one of the jackass guards who was trying to go THROUGH all the people standing in front of us instead of actually doing something about it. Anyway, here goes.
It all started out with Yngwie Malmsteen and a friggin' WALL of Marshall stacks. His tone was ok, but his rig died completely 2 times during his set. A lot of 80's cheesy kicks and more guitar throwing than I've ever seen before. He played twice with his tongue and once with his AMP! His set was actually much better than I expected, since I had heard 5 or 6 of his songs before, and to me, they all sounded the same. I liked the violin effect, but if it was an eBow, doesn't that go on your finger? Anyway, he must have tossed out about 60 picks during the show and he probably kicked about 10 of them.
Steve Vai put on the best show I've ever seen, PERIOD. He is the best entertainer I've seen in my life. Between starting out with his tripleneck Ibanez, blowing the guitar to cause harmonics, playing with his tongue and playing with his TREM ARM, his set was amazing. Tony McAlpine is an awesome guitarist as well, and the two playing together is simply a sight to see. Vai was also looking at me and Susan during half of his set because he saw that we couldn't get the smiles off our faces. During the jam session, he actually posed for me...I'll post the pic when Susan gets off my laptop (probably tomorrow). It was a very personal show for me, and the fact that he ended his set with "For the Love of G-d," my favorite of his songs, helped a lot...we had a call and response session just between the two of us during the song by nodding our heads while he was playing one part, which just made my night.
Next came the man, Joe Satriani! He had some of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen, including a blue flamed guitar with the body as orange snakeskin (better to post pics than describe...coming soon). He opened, as usual, with Satch Boogie, and seeing that I was playing air guitar the way he was actually playing, he gave me a big smille. After the song, I screamed out "T2J loves ya, Joe!" and he gave his typical "Alright!" and gave me a wink. Later, during the jam session, he posed for me as well, which was really cool. I loved his set, but I honestly enjoyed it more last year, probably because of all the people shoving themselves in front of me. I usually wouldn't mind, but there were so many people that I couldn't even stand in front of my seat anymore because I wouldn't have been able to see (mind you, I was in the FRONT ROW and this was the situation). Overall, it was a great set though.
The last part was the Jam session, which ROCKED! Joe and Steve had obvious chemistry. Yngwie fit in ok, but he just didn't seem quite right with them (although he still rocked). Anyway, I got some cool shots of the 3 guys playing together and the chemistry between the three of them actually wasn't as bad as everyone's been saying, but you could definitely tell who didn't fit in. Anyway, pix to come. I'll post a link when I get them up.

jonny aimless - That review does make some good points. However, the reviewer contradicts himself in a few places...which, as far as I'm concerned, makes the rest of his comments irrelevant.
UF Dean - Thanks for your review...I can't wait to see the pictures. It's so cool when you get to "connect" with someone onstage. That happened several times between John Petrucci and I during Dream Theater's set at the 8/11/02 gig.

Austin: I know how that whole paper thing goes...last Thursday I had a 3 page critical review of a critical review of a story, all in Portuguese (yes, I typed that right) that I started doing research for at 12 pm and finished at 11 PM. CrushingDay: I think pick CATCHING should be the sport...if you read my review you'll see that I almost got my arse kicked about 5 times trying to catch picks...some guy started pushing my hand away and I literally had to slap him to get him to stop! Zachary: His picks were black at the WPB show, so he might have just run out by the time the next show came up.
Mick87: LMAO! I've actually done stuff like that to piss off friends while we're jamming!
Alexandre: DAMN that guy's amazing! I hope I can do that one day! Geniuser: I think that venue just isn't meant for concerts...they had 90% of their staff over the age of 60 and the sound tech's weren't doing a great job by any means. The sound in general was JUST OK, but at a show like that you expect it to be spot-on. I still had a great time tho. Thanks, Nico! You're site has saved me HOURS of midi time! Chris Peters: The "Yngwie Who" shirt says "Yngwie Fucking Malmsteen, that's who!" on the back...sorry just wasn't sure if you knew. They were selling them at the stand at the WPB show and I'm sure at the HOB show as well. BTW, I forgot to add that Steve threw out Halloween candy to everyone, which I thought was cool...He also played the Halloween movies' theme song. He also played the triple neck along with his bassist at the same time! More to come later. Alan

johnny aimless--- that was a really evil review!!! hahaha... I have rarely seen such a scathing review of a show. I don't think the reviewer's assessment of satriani's career was very accurate. and I honestly don't see how joe could be seen as returning to his "metallic roots" with crystal planet. I don't see the G3 show as being some kind of competition, but the reviewer seems bent on making it seem as if all 3 guitarists are out to cut each other's heads off. that's just not true. All in all, I think it was quite a pointless review of the show.

Yoda - lol... bro you beat me to it.... yes jam.... now I think that I'm in the UK for at least the next three or four weeks I'll talk to the C-in-C and make the appropriate arrangements...
Michelle - so yo ol' man is into jazz and fussion players.. if he's not done so already get him to check out Bireli Lagrene..
962 - if t2j is full of shite then I am glad to know that I have been a major contributer..
well I gotta get famous for something
tapper - not cancelled postponed.. I convinced the guys that I have work of a higher priority that needs my urgent attention and they yes I'd go to Dallas but it would suit me better if I did it early next year...
and this is the truth.. cos last night was the first time I hit my studio in a month.. lol lol.. so I pulled a bit of a fast one and made priorities that keep me in the UK for a while...
my CD is just taking eons to complete... the day job is getting in the way and sending me l over the place right now.... I'm going to try and avoid travelling abroad for as long as I can now...
Stu Clone - lookalikes: I often get mistaken for Whitney Houston
ovation - I think I kinda 'influenced' the angels this time 'round.... lol
they got me back though... mix #5 of the Raft happened last night... and happens to suk.. lol
crispin - I use a dunlop crybaby and I really like it.. I do find though that I lose definition though.. which is great because it hides how crap my technique is.. lol

Johnny Aimless... man that was a nasty review, certainly not favourable to Joe that's for sure... obviously the writer of this "filth" has no respect for real talent.. so without further delay here's the review from "The Palm Beach Post"
Satriani runs second to Vai again on G3 tour
By Bill Meredith, Special to The Palm Beach Post
Sunday, November 2, 2003
Guitarist Joe Satriani has a knack for perfecting things early, then inexplicably changing them. His 1987 album Surfing With the Alien was a landmark instrumental rock release, but then Satriani chose to feature his mediocre singing.
The funky 1995 CD Joe Satriani reinvented the guitarist (who sounded like an organic second coming of Jeff Beck), only to find him reverting to a sterile metallic version of his former self.
The reason? The G3 Tour, which Satriani started in 1996, using former student Steve Vai and Texas virtuoso Eric Johnson as his opening acts. True to form, the first G3 Tour was the best -- even if Vai's showmanship and Johnson's wizardry repeatedly made Satriani's closing set anticlimactic.
The result? A more note-happy Satriani trying to keep up. The proof? The current G3 Tour, with Vai and Swedish shredder Yngwie Malmsteen, which appeared at the Kravis Center on Halloween night.
To his credit, Satriani wasn't blown away this time. He's learned that his previous trios didn't allow for coverage of all his own recorded overdubs, so his quartet benefited from having much-needed rhythm guitarist Galen Henson. The headliner stood out on rockers from the opening Satch Boogie to the closing Summer Song (where he traded solos with bassist Matt Bissonette).
Satriani was the most tasteful of the three during the closing jams. His wretchedly sung take of Neil Young's Rockin' In the Free World may have ended the show with a whimper, but he out-soloed Malmsteen and Vai on Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing and Voodoo Chile.
Satriani may not have been blown away by friend and former pupil Vai, but as usual, he was upstaged. The charismatic Vai has all the stage presence that the motionless Satriani lacks, and Vai's 1980s tenure in Frank Zappa's band taught him lessons that "Satch" couldn't. Supported by keyboardist/guitarist Tony MacAlpine, bassist Billy Sheehan, guitarist Dave Weiner, and drummer Jeremy Coulson, Vai shook his guitar violently by the whammy bar and turned the device in circles as if it were a coffee-grinder.
Vai's set was also a welcome relief from that of Malmsteen, the dated-sounding 1980s overplayer that Satriani hand-picked to avoid finishing third this year. After the two opening tunes, Evil Eye and Baroque 'N' Roll, Malmsteen had proven to be the musical equivalent of a conversationalist obsessed with the sound of his own voice.
