matt martinez,
we have ethn to credit for coining the phrase "PROG'D!"

ethn, if i can, i'm totally up for it... it's mostly in zach's hands now... i may have to either: cancel something i think i have on sunday, or come back early on sunday, though.

Do the stu - it was? fair enough, maybe it was my imagination- i think it'd be a great idea though.

fusion - nice number 5 choice... kick-ass guitarist isn't he? which albums of his do you have? I only have the george benson cookbook but i love it.

Hmmm, let's see...my 5 favorites. That's a tough one.

1. Allan Holdsworth 2. Joe 3. Steve Vai 4. Steve Hackett 5. Jeff Beck

There's so many more than 5 though. I can't forget Richie Blackmore, Derek Trucks, Duane Allman, Steve Lukather and so on.

jellyman: You should hear Eric Johnson's Alien Love Secrets. Great live improvisation there.

I got the SBM book the other day. Now Starry Night and The Traveler are on my Learn Next list.

JS JS: There's a link on Yngwie's website to some G3 tour pics. There's a lot of pics on there of Steve and the triple neck.

I sure hope the triple neck stuff is on the G3 DVD. I like the new Vai Live at the Astoria DVD but sure wish he did the triple on there.

Do The Stu: You're 20? I would not have thought it. Your postings show a maturity way beyond your years. That's a complement by the way. Take it from a 50 year old. lol

Wow, its the end of term and I'm just about to leave uni for home. Its been an interesting 10 weeks! So, Jelly man, Nick, Crushing Day, how have all your terms been?

sharif Happy 400.

js js No one gets into both Yale and Harvard by being stupid. If people would stop listening to each other, after having listened to democrat party propoganda they published becasue they were pissed off at losing so narrowly, and started listening to Bush's speeches, they wouldn't hold that opinion of him.

steevlan1 - isn't alien love secrets a vai album? the johnson one's alien love child i think... i may well check it out, i just don't think i should be spending too much on cds... i've added around 20 to my collection this term.

greg m - my term's not over for another week, sadly. got two bach chorale harmony exercise pieces of coursework for monday and a couple of exams next week. but it's been pretty good, yeah. i like being here... though i'm looking forward to going home!

Nick - the consecutive octaves / 5th's I explained a few posts ago if you want to check out my ramblings..

song writing... like anything else it's practice.. the more of it you do the better you get... your writing style is a direct reflection to two key components..

1- what music you listen to...

2- how much you know about music...

listen to a wide variety of music.. and soak up all the lovely knowledge... write.. experiment.. do lots of it...

there's no real method.. different people approach writing in many different ways... tell me how you go about writing music.. your thought processes.. how you get inspired.. how you write.. then maybe I can throw in a few things from there on..

jelly man - post modernism and serialism were not my strong points when I was studying all that stuff... I was really into to the Baroque through to high romantic stuff.. my strong points were counterpoint, form and all that stuff... I loved looking through a baroque fugue or suite and pulling it appart, finding out all the nuts and bolts in a classical sonata and stuff like that... tried writing stuff too.. an Italian style concerto, a French suite and a fugue for 4 voices.. staying within the rules, observing form and making it sound musical and not like a maths exercise is really tough.. made me realise how clever all the great composers are... now pretty much anything goes so it's far easier to be expressive as there are no bounderies...

all this talk makes me realise what a huge amount of information I've forgoten... kinda 'use it or lose it'...

Clarky I'm going to have a look at some more of the modal stuff this weekend, there are a lot of questions that I could throw in right now but as both me and Dave know, I already know how to find the answers, but sometimes I'm just a lazy twat - lmao ;-)

Dave Stanley Jordan, great player man but a bit of a suprise to me to see him on your list.............. IA kicks ass, he's kinda mid list for me at the moment, another Keneally type 'got to be in the mood' player. Freak Guitar II is currently being recorded, my bro' got a mail from him the other day !!!!!

Okay that could be it for me for this week, so have a good weekend and don't post too much - lol - I can never keep up

btw - Cube 9.11 will blow you away for sure ;-)

ok now im fuckin annoyed. no one obviously read my reasoning behind being a little miffed about people not having joe in their top 5. i never said you couldnt have an opinion. i just found it odd to not have joe at lest in your top 5 and say it here in his site. is that not comprehensible? someone has to understand where I am coming from here? i know there are tons of other guitarists to love...but go on their site and say it there, don't tell joe that he's not on your top 5, thats hurtful i think. but go ahead do what you want, you're entitled, i guess i feel like its disrespectful in a way. but im not mad at anyone personally for doing it, so...whatever.....

Look's like your getting used to the forum here, lol (lot's-o-love), and JOE wont be hurt by peoples choices, because JOE likes other groups as well.... Even JOE said awhile back that he was listening to Tool and Incubus.... It's human nature to explore and reach out for other styles, and JOE does it too, and post's about it.... So, it's all good, express your opinion, we like to debate.... :-)

greg m..my first term..hmm..kinda boring in places...fun in some places...usuall sort of stuff

clarky...maybe you should teach at the acm ;) music i listen to...guitar oreintated rock..such as satch, vai, dt, iron maiden, van halen, stratovarious...racer x. i write instrumental music...and how much i know about music..well..i see theory as my stronger point in knowledge..such as chord spelling..modes..scales etc...but its applying this to the neck that i fall down...discovered something to practise!..(i get easily bored..can you recommend something that can keep me interested? i would think..pick a mode/key...and noodle around with it to a metronome...or..if i'm on the computer..create a simple drum groove..and jam over that..maybe lay down a one chord backing as Neil sugggested if i can get the right sound thru the pc...and get it recorded right...or if anyone has one?? then i can work out what chord it is...my ear isn't very good either...although the ear training part of the course at the acm is useful...but not very big..i guess it coems down to experience in telling chords apart.

my though process...well..i usually come up with an idea of a riff in my head...then..i try and see what it sounds like on the guitar..then i rush headlong into it and create the drums over it..develop the idea and work from there...either changing the riff completely or changing it to create a song...sometimes i come up with a mellody line first.

and about the consecutive ocatves and 5th...how come is that illegal? dont sopme modern pop/rock songs do that? with the bass lines copying the rythmn guitar?

Tastey I totally understand where you were coming from but I think that people don't see that as disrespectful, Joe's just a normal guy / guitar player he doesn't have the kind of ego that would mean any of this would bother him. Its like you will occasionally see a debate on here about who is the best guitarist?............. the answer is there isn't a best guitarist, there are lots of different guitarists and people have lots of different tastes. Hey I'm sure Joe wouldn't kick us out just for not putting him on the list............. Right Joe ? ...... Joe?............... hey c'mon man, put me down................. look I can change the list okay....................... it was an oversight................. we can work this thing out............... awwwww man..................... right that's it then I'm off to Vai.com - roflmao ;-) ;-) ;-)

Mike You're welcome dude............. btw Did I mention Dave Martone.............. err that's Dave Martone............. yeah that's it dude DAVE MARTONE ! -lol - blows me away ;-)

still here, still dreaming. I'll probably miss any reply to this post. I wouldn't wish military life on anyone, but it's all for the better end result.
I remember last year....the debate on Jimi's the best guitarist...which spawn to who is the best? and I ended up saying something close to what R6rocker said.... there is no best, only different.
I hope G3 keeps going until I can be on it. ;-) 3 years until my contract is up...well then I still have to get resituated, before I can start in on putting a band together. Lots and lots to do yet....like I said, still dreaming.
but if it had just worked out different, I'd be famous already. ****big sigh**.................
