Do the Stu, If Steve is doing a guitar duet thing ( I aint heard about it myself) bet it is a big hype play for Favored Nations artists... I would like Joe to do one with heroes and others he admires, in varying styles. There is a lot more to Joe's talent than what he has "released" to us... I am sure he could jazz it up with Carlton, Stern or Metheny and blues it up with J Lang or Kenny Wayne Shepperd in the studio!!! Or he could do an album like YJM or Morse paying hommage to influences.

ovation1, yeah, it's great to see Andy getting the exposure he deserves. And it can't be dinied that this is partly due to Favored Nations......well done Steve Vai, for making great musicians into accessible, great musicians. Hopefully he'll produce Nuno's next record too! that'd be cool.

SatanBoogie, hmmm....easier or harder? The fully-scalloped board is just different. You kind of get used to it without noticing. But it doesn't seem to serve much purpose, tonally.

Regards the JS2000 - I don't remember seeing Joe ever play one...he just holds it in one of it's promo photos!

ahh, the 'top 5 guitarists' thing has come around again!

mine changes in order a lot, but has to include:

Eric Johnson; Steve Vai; Joe Satriani; Nuno Bettencourt; Andy Timmons, and at this time, that is probably the order I'd put 'em in.

Lukather, Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, Igor Belsky, Jenniffer Batten ~ they could all be on that list. top 5's are kind of academic. Actually, Jon Rabbetts, the guy I know who's gig I went to about a month ago, could easily go in my top 5, just cause he is great fun to watch on stage. He makes his playing so interactive, and it's that kind of thing that matters more than you'd think.

pradip, Joe's pickups are passive. Made by DiMarzio, he has a PAF pro in the neck position and a Fred in the bridge.

You just broke a golden rule of the message board ~ you multi posted, in cold blood. You'll be lucky if you don't get evicted for that!

Mr Nick, hehe, if you're practising what you don't know, but you don't know what you don't know, you could say it was an 'unknown unknown'. That is to say that it is something that we don't know we don't know! hehehe (I hope you've seen the news recently otherwise that quote is going to mean bugger-all to you!)
This is my opinion, guys. Sorry for having one...

damn right man. We're all entitled to our own opinion. I think Vai is the best guitarist alive or to have lived, but I prefer Eric Johnson's music. There's subtle differences depending on what you like someone for, so the fact that I put Vai 1 ahead of Joe is meaningless...they really belong in joint second.

Sky Ant, I think there was one called www.project-guitar.com something like that, maybe without the hyphon. Guitar-building is hard work.

I'm finally listening to Steve's anthology (LOL, yeah I've been busy). Does anyone else here the main lick from Summer Song in the last few seconds of Die To Live...? :-)

Plum Loco - LOL...thanks for the correction. I had to hurry up and finish my post because I had to get to class...that's why I made the mistake, I guess.

mikesb - Steve talked about that album quite a bit over the past few months...the music was going to tell a story that he wrote as a kid. It was going to include a handful of guitarists, each playing a different character in the story. It's not really a "duet" thing, but it's kinda similar. I never saw it as a big ad for Favored Nations. Steve seemed to be very into the project...it's too bad that he had to push it aside.

I'd love to hear Satch do something with Jonny Lang. If that happened, Joe wouldn't have to sing! LOL...

clarky - forgetting no parallel 5ths.... guess you've been playing too many power chords- too accustomed to it! it's alright, i've found some definitions i'm using... got to find another 800 words to fill up the essay with though.

ah... you mentioned the power chords things later... never mind. just doing species counterpoint at the moment... this course is too easy so far... i dunno if beethoven would mind some of the tributes to him... he was pretty progressive after all... and deaf. as long as no-one put a pencil in his mouth.

master yoda - i'd love to see joe collaborate with a singer too... his solos on songs with vocals are sublime...

tastey - no offence intended - i've just seen these things get out of hand too often in the past with people taking things like that too personally... sorry if i sounded like i was slagging you off...

as far as my top 5 favourite guitarists go... i think i'd put joe at number one just cause every solo he plays seems to fit the purpose perfectly. Not saying he's technically the best but definitely my favourite. Then you'd get Vai, who technically is as good as I've seen... some of his stuff is completely sublime, though some of it can get a touch out of hand (please don't quote the audience is listening at me...)

NSPike - Steve VFai was in the planning stages of doing an album like that with vocalists- don't know what's going on with that!

Eric Johnson - I bought Ah Via Musicom a couple of weeks ago and so far am not as impressed as I was by the G3 stuff- I don't think think that he's quite in the league of Joe/Steve, particularly in terms of live/improvisation.

Hey Joe,

Been an admirer of your work forever. I would like to know if you might ever consider a G3 Tour, one with George Lynch and another with Jeff Beck. I realize that it would probably be really hard to get Jeff Beck, but I think it would be absolutely awesome, and I know you and George Lynch would work out well. October 17th at the Chronicle Pavilion in Concord, CA was great. I'm blown away you were able to get Yngwie. Keep rockin!

Peace, Luv, Happiness.
