Tastey - yes.. I am definately going to answer your question... not right now though cos it's time to go home from work... I'd like to think on it a while first.... e-mail me a list of the whole series of issue that are eating you up.. I know that there are a good few things... this is so that I can see it all in a single sitting.. not dispearsed across multiple posts.. this'll help you too.. kinda consolidate the whole thing from before the start 'till now... I'll read and think... and answer in private not out here... if you want it just me and you that's fine.. if you want someone else in there too to bounce ideas and opinion off of too.. then that's fine too.. I'll leave it to you tho...
I'm not sure that t2j is the appropriate place to launder such washing...

AmerFarah - lol.. I mean like write your own songs with real notes and stuff like with a pen and paper so ya kinda get the tunes an shit in ya head.. kinda write out how the guitars and bass and drums are gonna go on the special music paper with the lines and shit on.. then you can take this home and sight read it and it should come out real good.. if ya bass player and drummer can read and you wrote their stuff out first you can make them copies and they can read what you wrote too..

writing music on like the special music paper [known as 'manuscript paper'] using all the dots and stems and shit is known as 'scoring'...

a piece of paper with all the real music dots and shit is known as a 'score'

ur own songs is like known as 'ur own songs'... lol

austin,
yah, i would've liked a cooler cover, i guess that's just sony doing what they do, though. i'm always really happy that it's coming along as quickly as it is.

clarky,
when will you learn? tab is infinitely better than notation, because it allows us more musically-minded guitarist people to continue the illusion of utter musical stupidity, and then we totally bash the audience with awesomeness ;)

The Prez Threads on boards like that really piss me off - so many children about. Eta What size amp you need will depend on two things (i) what you want to use it for and (ii) whether it is a valve amp or transistor. If you want to gig eventually you would probably want a 4 x12 cab just so you can shift enough air in a pub / club situation. Although you could mic up and go through the PA with a smaller amp. For home use only probably a 15w transistor amp would be loud enough. If you want to go for valve and you have to rely on driving the valves hard to get the distortion, don't go too loud. I've got an Ashdown Fallen Angel 40w which is all valve but is set up with two sets of valves so you can drive them hard at low volumes. Another nice touch is that you can use this model to drive a 4 x 12 cab as well. I think there is a smaller model (20W ?) as well. If you want mainstream starter amp, the small 10w / 15w Marshalls would be a good first amp and plenty loud enough for home use but you would probably get lost behind the drums in a band situation. hth

Ovation....I think the last time I was able to track down a Gibson Trini it was going for close to $3000, and I don't remember what condition it was in. It is one of my life ambitions to own one again.

R6Rocker I was being funny, although that would be the amp to get if you want your whole neighborhood to hear you.

Phrydom Never Mind, i landscaped it. I just have to adjust some stuff, but iy\t should be fine, have you ever tried to play the song? It'll be tough to play, I give myself a year estimite of being able to somewhat play it.

Clarky Whenever I write, I take notes from a scale, and only use the ones I want, I usually write the rythem part after the lead, at different points the lead must be altered to fit the rythem, but it works out. I try not to use too many different chordings, just bassically 4 or 5 % power chords, then I use the different scales I can, I usually write the song down in case I forget, songwriting has come easier for me with practice.

Stu Clone Tab isn't bad, just expand from the tab, I think would be good. Give your ear a little practice if you want to go that route, or be like a guy I knew Joe who went into lessons and told the guy all he wanted to do was play Metallica, I played the solos for him a couple of times. Man, he tried to write some songs, they all sound similar, he's a JAmes Hetfield type player, but let me tell you, he can play James Part on "Enter Sandman" like there's no tommorrow

Joe posted. How cool, first time I have seen that since I have been checking out this board.

If you do happen to read this, just like to say I have been a fan since 87 and you have been a huge insperation. First saw you at The Roxy in L.A .that same year. Played one of your songs at my wedding (Thinking of You) and wanted to name my son Joe but the wife would not go for it, so we went with Zach instead.

Thanks for all the great music thru all the years.

and just one suggestion.... SING AGAIN

Hi Joe i am one of DEPROFUNDIS a small unheard industrial band from BULGARIA, I really wish I could see you playing THE FORGOTTEN on the stage, this is a great song and the feeling that comes out from it, so sad and deep, it burns from the inside it burns. I used to play Joe Satriani 8 hours a day 10 years ago and I play legato just like you untill my fingers couldn't play anymore.

ZZ Top, I have heard some of their new album Mescalero, seems pretty good, good tone, probably the best album in a long time. They also released Chrome, Smoke, & BBQ, I wanna check that out, I'm not a big fan, just heard some of their stuff, some of their stuff was the first stuff I learned to play!

Johnny A.,Very interesting stuff. Vai himself was pleased This came out of the newest Guitar Player

Quote: Steve Vai commented that he doesn't understand how I get the melody note to ring out from within the chord.

He definally is a unique guitar player, cool instrumentalist. I would suggest trying to lend a cd out of him to someone not used to instrumentals before you go all out vai, especially if there into pop.

Hey Joe... I Look forward to seeing you play next time you come to the Houston-Austin area. If you are ever in the Toronto or Montreal area for a G3 show, look up Frank Marino and let him sit in on a couple of shows. He is still in great form, as his recent release attests to. I hear that you are going to Europe to do a G3 tour. If you stop by England, look up Robin Trower. He also has made significant contributions to the art of electic lead-guitar playing. I bet he would love to sit in on a show or two. He still in top form as well. He still cranking out quality recordings. At any rate, I love your style of playing. It has had tremendous influential impact upon my own. I'm 45 yrs. old and entering into some of the best, most technically advanced and creative stuff I have ever done. I was always told that if you didn't have it together by the time you were in your late twenties, you could forget it. Of course, that is utter nonsense. I'm just a late bloomer I guess (ha, ha, ha...). I do thank God for the grace given to me to accomplish what I have on the guitar. I also am extremely grateful for the music of guys like Frank Marino, Robin Trower, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen and you Mr. Joe Satriani. Keep on Jammin' ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz tetra...

Johnny Hiland, For those who don't know, he was at the Nashville G3 tour. I haven't heard anything of his, maybe I should, what's your opinion on it.

How did everyone discover Satch? I discovered him when i saw the cool cover art of Surfing with the Alien through my dad's piles of cd's.

It was through Satch i discovered Vai and Stu Hamm.

Do the Stu and/or Stu Clone Have you ever played with the idea of recording yourself covering a Stu Hamm song?

I first heard Joe from a friend of mine who had bought Surfing when it first came out and played it over and over all day long. So of course I had to go and get it myself and saw Not of This Earth, so I picked it up too. Been a fan ever since.

Is it possible to learn music theory without being in some sort of musical school?

Vai to score the music for Halo 2? that would be interesting. I don't think Bungie could possibly make a better decision, if that's the one they take! Fingers crossed

mOBSCENE, I always have middle on full, bass at about 70-90% depending on the speakers, and treble at 60-90%, again, depending on the speakers. Mid tone is very important......without it your sound can easily disappear as soon as you start playing alongside other instruments. Presence is just a general boost function, which adds some punch to all frequencies.
Joe, thanks for answering the question about the recording of EOC!
SOTD: Echo
Ethn, Line 6! That has to be your best bet, they're not too expensive, and 100W is easy to find!
Clarky, it's interesting reading your comments on god/faith etc. I'm a loyal atheist myself - I don't believe in any religious stuff. I also find it difficult to come to terms with the idea that all wars have been fundamentally caused by religion, which seems to kind of undermine the point.
chris, signed copies for region 2? you must be joking?! I'm surprised we even get region 2! Europe is always such an afterthought when it comes to these things.
The Prez, just read that Vai-hater's post you linked us to. What exactly was his/her point? If you don't like someone then surely you just don't listen to them?! hehe, soppy twat needs to grow up!
Eta, it depends on what sort of amp you want. If you want a pure valve amp, without a bunch of effects on the front, just a couple of channels, then a nice 100w head is always good. if you want something with some processing, like a line 6, then they also do a semi-valve (I think) head. Or you could have a combo. They do a 60w and 100w combo, but they are only 'valve-state'
Amerfarah, well it's really up to people as individuals whether or not they use tab. To be honest, if you want to learn something by someone else you might as well use tab. However, if you're trying a new style or a new technique, it's always good to try and figure it out before you go back to the book. I generally just use tab when I really can't figure out what the hell is being played - sometimes it's very useful for giving new ideas and learning new technique, tricks and stuff.
Aaron, well in my opinion, "Flying In A Blue Dream" and "Crystal Planet" are Joe's best albums, as they have a great deal of variation. You can get official TAB/standard notation books of both, which is superioir to downloading somebody's own interpretation off the net - you'll get the real deal! They're not too expensive either - try amazon. Oh, welcome, by the way, to t2j!
StringG, yeah there's a bunch of books available that will teach you music theory. You won't get round the fact that it's quite boring, so books aren't always the easiest method. People also teach it independently.
Rocknbones, you asked Joe for advice to people who want to 'follow in his steps' - well, years ago Joe wrote a guest column once a month in a US Guitar magazine. Those guest columns were compiled and re-printed in the form of a book entitled "Joe Satriani - Guitar Secrets", published by the Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation.

You can still buy it, it's really cheap, and it's a great resource for learning Joe's ideas about improving your playing.
