Newsman

Such hostility.

A true Christian is not going to shove thier beliefs at you. They are just going to express themselves and if you want to hear it, fine, if not, you dont have to listen. There is freedom of speech in this country and on this board. You dont have to slap down someone else for not believing the same thing you do.

Hey all, more work on the new album, we're hoping to have it done in the next month or so, with a tour to follow. Also, praise the lord!

okay, maybe it wouldn't really be like that, and it would probably be funnier, but it would be interesting ;)

Frenchy Du Rock - Your Penguin link doesn't work...can you try to post it again?

Can you explain to me why you think Terminator 3 shows how desperate California is for money? I think I know where you're going, but it doesn't make sense.

The Prez - I looked around and couldn't find a phone number to call to place orders. Sorry.

You don't have WinZip? Download it!

You should buy ZZ Top's greatest hits album that came out a few years ago...great stuff!

I can get through a few of the easier Stu Hamm songs, but I don't have a way to record them. Oh well.

bluebuffalo9 - Crushing Day wasn't played at the shows that were recorded.
roland2112 - In the specific case of ESPN, I don't think Joe was ever paid for the use of his music. I think he politely complained, which caused ESPN to stop using his stuff and use music from a session guitarist instead.

When Joe's music is played as background music on the radio, it's no different from a radio station playing it as a "song". The station pays royalties to Sony.

NewsMan - Go away. You don't contribute anything positive to this community. I've told you that before.

If you want to join in and share your opinions on a regular basis, you're more than welcome to. I'll be the first person here to ask you about Joe's music. If you're only going to come on here once a month to criticize people, though, do us all a favor and just stay away.

I don't agree with Clarky's views on religion, but I'm glad that he can speak his mind here. I agree with Greg M, and I'm glad that he can speak his mind here too. No one here is shoving beliefs down anyone else's throat.

And now for a few random things...

- How did I discover Satch? I bought the original G3 album because I liked Eric Johnson.

- Even though I'm very disappointed with the G3 2003 artwork, I'm still glad that the CD and DVD are going to be released only about three months after the tour ended. I just thought I'd point that out.

- I went to Wal-Mart today...I think it was the first time I've been there since I stopped working there back in August. There was this one guy who worked on the truck crew back then who I absolutely could not stand to be around. I never heard him say anything nice to anyone. He would always have something negative to say about me and my work.

Today I saw him walk into the store when I was in the checkout line. He was pushing carts...hehe. That really made me smile...this guy now has one of the lowest jobs in the store.

Hey there Joe! Just wanted to say fantastic job to you and your crew for making another world class G3 tour! It's always a pleasure to see you and your guests up there jammin away. It's always a great source of inspiration for me. I just wanted to know how you feel about playing the Warner Theater in Washington DC? That is such a great and beautiful venue to see shows in. I live in Maryland and that is where I saw the show. I have heard you speak of it only briefly so I just wondered what your thoughts were on it and when you might be back in the Maryland / DC area? Also, If I may suggest...Have yourself or your tour manager check the Rams Head tavern in Annapolis. I saw Steve Morse there and I can't describe how great that show was. Not only for the talent of the band but also for the setting you are placed in when watching performers there. It may be a little small but you can't beat the intimate setting of how close you feel to the performer you are watching. Thanks again for all you have done for us guitar fanatics and hope to see you and your band soon! Cheers!

I'm just curious. I've noticed that Joe and others of you fans really like listening to the Deftones. I have listened to their music and I haven't really found much that I like. Could someone explain what's so great about them? Obviously, there is something there which I'm not hearing.

Humbly submitted.

okie dokie...I'm satisfied with the new pickups...have adjusted the heights and everything seems fine...set em about 1/4 inch from the string to the pole...seems the best tone quality there..

I discovered Joe thru a friend...lady made me a cassette tape of some of Joe's music and I was blown away...at that time tho , I don't think he had but 3 cd's on the market...

then when he started this web site, he used to talk a lot...nowadays it seems he only peeks in and says howdy only once in awhile......I guess he probably got tired of the same questions over and over....who wouldn't? anyways, it was nice to see the blue once again...

not necessarily, conchito,

i'm sure there's plenty of people here (myself included) that don't really like the people we're supposed to like just because we like satriani. that's something i really dig about the diversity of most of joe's music. it really can be different enough that you don't have to be a super special person to appreciate what he does, since he does so many things with his compositions.

Dear Joe, this is the first time were introduced and first and foremost i would like you to know that you take my fathers time like no one else. hes constantly making comparisons and demonstrating the feel and value of your playing.he plays more of you than anyone else and once he starts he cant stop and he takes off with you.Jeff Beck has always been his Ace in the hole and now he seems to have two!im letting you know this because hes coputer illiterate, but hell get there. he missed you at Jones beach this summer. you came and went before he knew it.My father usually doesnt discuss music with people because he says they usually dont have any depth or real understanding of what music is from the bottom up.has John Mclaughlin ever done anything for you(you know do you like to listen to his playing)he knows your busy and he wants you to know that he loves you and your playing and he also understands what you have to say with your music.thank you for your time.

Good point. Given Joe's diversity of composition, it shouldn't surprise me that some of his many musical interests don't exactly speak to me. Satch's diversity is both astounding and appealing. I can't wait to see what new thing he offers us this spring. He has a new album coming out in the spring doesn't he?

Another interview snippet while we await the Webmasters decision!!! Interview with Joe Satriani March 25, 1998.

Joe Satriani, without a doubt the premier instrumental rock guitarist of the past decade in terms of popularity and critical success is still surprised by that success and the success of instrumental rock by artists such as himself and fellow G3 mate Steve Vai in general. “I still think it’s pretty freaky that Steve and I wound up achieving what we set out to achieve when we were just young kids and that we’ve been signed to the same label for the same ten years and now we’re signed to the same new label. And the fact that and we even get to go out on tour together, you know it’s something we would never have dreamed of.” This frank humbleness and sincere gratitude for his well deserved success appear to embody the personality of the man, who I had the great fortune of meeting prior to the Toronto performance of the warm-up tour to the next generation of the G3 experience (starting mid May in Europe with Michael Schenker and Uli Jon Roth and with a North American version to follow).

Crystal Planet has a rawer, more aggressive edge to it reminding many listeners of Surfing With The Alien, was this a concious effort?

“There were a couple of things that lead me in that direction. One was the idea of calling the record Crystal Planet was using it like a metaphor to allow me to bring everything in that I’ve ever done to the record whereas the red record, Joe Satriani was more like an exclusive record. I purposely avoided using a lot of techniques and compositional and recording styles to create a mood very much like the Extremist where we had this sort of classic hard rock vision and so we downplayed certain aspects of the sound, we made the guitars thin and more bright and the drums really big and this all had a very live in the studio feel. With Surfing, that was a whole different vibe as well. This time I wanted the record to be able to accept anything from any of these records plus to accept some new things I wanted to try out, songs like ‘Raspberry Jam’, ‘Crystal Planet’, the song ‘ Time’ a lot of songs on the record that have different things that I’ve never done before. And I purposely tried to avoid including any kind of composition that was about anything really depressing, like ‘Down, Down, Down’ or ‘Hill of the Skulls’ on Surfing. I just thought I’ve done that, lets move on and create an album with a different feeling.”

Has the amount of on stage jamming and improvisation you’ve done in the last few years with people like Jon Lord of Deep Purple and the various G3 ensembles affected your songwriting and approach to this record?

“We wanted to try and keep things as live as possible. On the G3 tour we had worked with the Canadian producer Mike Fraser and he captured us in our first month of being a trio, myself, Stu Hamm on bass and Jeff Campitelli on drums. And I wanted to get an album to reflect what was happening within the band and not just me, as well as focusing on the compositions I felt I wanted to write. So the effect of the tour and playing with these musicians every night, they kind of challenge you and that brings your excitement and interest level up. We recorded and worked on the album in a schedule where we on tour, then we wrote the record, then we were on tour, then we recorded the record, went back on tour, mixed the record, went on tour and mastered and put the finishing touches on the record, so a lot of that had a lot of effect and influence on how we reacted to our own performances, the environment of being in the studio and we tried to keep it live and that contributed to the energy level on the record. We’re currently hitting the stage with it and playing about 90% of the new album.”

stu clone Sir Mick? You mean that mick87 is actually Mick Jagger? Wow, we have not one but two rock legends on the board! rofl.

one last christian thing Most wars are not caused by religion. There is just about always an ulterior motive. I've never met a lutherian who accepted that Hitler was a good lutherian, for example. Its like when Jesus was around and the Pharisees tried to kill him because "he was breaking their religion". He wasn't because he was their religion, but they didn't like him because they were greedy and wanted to keep their jobs.

newsman Sure I want to discuss Satriani! What's your favourite album? Which of his 'far out' ones do you like more, EOC orJS95? I'd have to say the extremist and js95 myself. Have you ever met him?
