neil- true, true. I mean petrucci is undeniably a superb player- and many of his solos are great too...i dunno, maybe dt was just a bit too heavy for me... as if...

do the stu- nice... that's 2-1 to you... are seconds longer in america? hehe, just kidding... i think i'd have a shot at getting up to your intermediate speed...that can be an aim for this term!

Michelle - Join the Pat Wagon, lol... it's not THAT bad. And that's very selfish of Senor Gilberto, now his cat is exposed for the government to suck out every freakin' thought and skeam by some 40 billion dollar satelite... tis a shame.... where's me NyQuill?

Master Yoda - That's too bad about not being able to hear Petrucci during Erotomania. I love the major sounding shred and the neo-classical bit in that song a lot.

Greg - Thanks for the Happy 500 mate... as for your joke... no comment ;-)... lol

Jelly Man - That's cool... I'd love to hear some of the Awake stuff live. What's your favorite DT album right now? I'm all about my Images and Words...

OCPS470 - a guitar for a midi controller?? I didn't know you could do that, lol.

Micromys minutus, mischievous, michie? - Aye, Pia Vai for G3 Harp! lol... and what's the secret to spinning those letters around? That looks cool!

ovation - decided not to hit the lab tonight.. figured I needed to go bath in a nice manual... lol.. I been scoping out the AW16G manual to find out more about the mix down capabilites...

made some interesting discoveries...

having only read most of the manual when learning how to use the thing I new about 'scenes', how to set them up and how to alter them... imagine it's mix-down time.. I set the faders, the eq, fx depths, panning etc.... I can save this as a scene.. so I get to a moment in the song where I need to make one or more changes.. I make the changes and save that as anothoer scene.. the scenes are numbered.. so at any point in the song [bar and beat or mins, secs, frames] I can recall different scenes.. cool.. poor mans automation.. I figured that this is better than nothing.. but I thought that it may be a little 'blocky [like the changes could be a little abrupt].. so I had another delve through the manual and found that if the AW is being controlled by a sequencer [as mine is] then I can make canges to the faders, panning, fx send 1 and fx send 2 via the sequencer... midi channel 1 = track 1, chan 2 = track 2 and so on through to chan 16 / track 16.. so changes to midi chan 6 cc# 7 = fader volume changes on track 6.. cool.. this means I can fade things in / out and make smooth and sudden changes [what ever is needed].. however.. like I pointed out before.. this means that I lose midi channels used to play the orchestral parts that play the live during mix-down, leaving me with only the Korg as that's not midi controlled [although I'm not complaining]...

further reading revealed something nice... I also have the option to send midi controller signals for all tracks via a single midi channel.. currently I use channel 16 for Cubase to talk to the AW.. I can do everything via channel 16.. real time automation of the AW via Cubase and channels 1 through 15 are left available for the 'live' orchestra.. which is plenty...

better still.. if I send 'program change' numbers over this control channel it'll call up the corresponding scene which gives me eq control too....

even better still... if I switch on 'midi out' on the AW, I should be able to record real time the changes I make to the faders in Cubase so that I dont have to manually input all the values.. just record the mix settings and tinker later..

totally awesome.........

the downside is that I've not tried getting this stuff working yet... this, I am totally sure means a whole load of grief.. I'm going to have to seriously dick around in Cubase with 'custom midi cc# values' to get this working... I'm also going to have to make some changes to the midi set-up of the AW [which was a serious nightmare sorting out just to get the AW and Cubase to talk to each other in the first place]...

this is one of those.. "are you sure you want to start messing with this stuff and configure yourself into a deep mess?"

but the potential benefits are so great that I can't ignore it...

I'll get the lead guitar recorded first... then I'll make a note on paper of all the midi config on the AW [so that I can get back to where I was should all shit break loose in midi-land] and then take baby steps to see what this thing can do...

kinda exciting... but kinda scary too...

but for all of this... it wouldn't surprise me one bit if for some compatibility reason that I program the mix-down into Cubase and then absolutely fuck all happens.. like it just sits there... which means back to the old ways of.. learn how to 'play' the desk with me own lil' fingers during mix down...

fingers crossed....

I can't wait for the G3 DVD either. I want my wife to see it. My whole family are big Satch fans. I'm also a big Vai fan. Has anyone looked at the Song list on the G3 DVD and the CD? Have you noticed that For The Love Of God doesn't appear on them. That is the one song I wanted my wife to see Steve play. I don't know if he played it in Denver. Maybe he didn't, but at least they could have put it on the CD.

Hello, Joe!! This is my first posting ever to the site and I want to say thanks for allowing me the opportunity to speak to you. I met you this past weekend at the NAMM show in Anaheim and you were really very kind and gracious to me. First, l'd like to compliment you for keeping guitar music alive and well in the maintstream music scene. As a live performer, you make your shows so enjoyable for people to go to because you look like you are having the best time ever up on stage. Second, I'd like to thank you for bringing Yngwie on the tour this year. The G3 shows re-introduced him to the mainstream audience and it looks like we might hear more from him because of it. Now, a question: Since it seemed to work for Yngwie, do you think you could convince Edward Van Halen to come out of seclusion to do a few G3 gigs? I thought you would find that funny.

Clarky / jazzer13 - ¿Que pasa? In Spanish, you begin questions with an upside-down question mark and end them with a normal question mark.

jelly man - I've been sitting here for a few minutes trying to come up with an American measuring vs. metric measuring joke to explain why I'm faster than you, but my brain is just dead...oh well.
The Prez - If you want to preorder and get the autographed cover(s), you have to place your order through the Sony Music Store. You can only do that online. Look through some of my posts from this weekend to find the links.
Ya Yo Gakk - LOL...how does NFL Street cheat? I love NBA Street (1 and 2). They're fun games...have you played them?
amddata - Vai's For The Love Of God and Satch's Summer Song don't appear on the new G3 releases. They were both played, but they both also appear on the original G3 releases. That's probably why they were excluded.

Because of this, it would have been cool for Joe to maybe play Surfing With The Alien instead of Summer Song on the G3 tour. Everyone knows SWTA just like they know SS, so it would have worked great as a set-closer...AND it could be included on the live releases.

juju808 - I watched football all day yesterday too, but I didn't post anything about it because both of my teams lost. Bah! I like the Patriots though, so I'll be cheering for them in two weeks.

Have fun with school...I'm enjoying my last week of vacation.

When does everyone else start up again?

...Austin...
