anyone got song name suggestions for a song that, once completed, should be totally badass and is in a weird division of 9/8?
no "9" themed names! ;)

JS_JS Sweet... My guitar is a simple little Ibanez starter. It came with everything I needed to start playing. I think the model type is an Ijs GRX40-something or other. The amp is a puny little Ibz10.

Yeah a good name for the song would be like Crosscut or whiplash...

s1220, tailpiece/knife-edge wear varies depending on how you use it. Do you abuse it as much as Vai does? if so it won't last too long. If you hardly use it then it will last for many years. I abuse mine, that's what I have a deep trem cavity for.

Yeah it's fairly easy to replace. What you do is take it to the shop and say "the knife edge is worn out. Can you fix it please". And since it's an ibanez, it'd be best that you do that, or buy an Ibanez part, because other brands won't mesh well unless you buy a whole bridge, and then you may have to change the spacing of the bridge pins. Also, you will one day have to get the neck refretted! Now that is something worth sobbing about!

archimage, I don't think Joe des use compression no, although I think the recent report on his signature Peavey Amp said something about it having a little compression built in, but I may be confusing that with something else.
JS JP 41, I'd go for The Forgotten (Part 2), cause it's my absolute favourite tune of Joe's, it has a lot of feeling and emotion, some great sounds and layering, and an awesome solo. And I wish I could play it all! And whether you want to hear something sweet and melodic or something with some blazing guitar-playing in it, I think it will satisfy both.
Fablawyer, hehe, I think the fact that he wast taking shortcuts in the language was kind of the point! Cause his character was picking it up from the people he wouldn't have been able to speak in a standard form!

I thought the movie was amazing. Even the ninja scene was quite cool, although they weren't in the slightest bit covert, which was kind of disappointing! I have yet to see a realistic ninja movie!

Yoda, cool website dude!
Stu Clone, yeah the "why do they boo stu?" question is startin to get my goat as well. Actually my goat is well pissed off about it, it's not gonna be long before I start getting ratty! Which I feel ashamed at cause I admit to having asked the same question once, but hey, that was ages ago in a time when the fateful question hadn't been asked in a while! hehe

regards your question, is it actually a song or an instrumental? What kind of feeling? I'd guess with 9/8 it's kind of jazzy or progressive rock/metal sounding. Is it sincere and serious or silly and funky? Do you want Dream Theater-type names or Extreme-type names? (ie. Under A Glass Moon or Get The Funk Out!)

Frenchy (and mischievous), yeah that was me who responded about using Eric Johnson's Hibrid technique. you're welcome dude......jeez

Tastey - 9/8 is a time signature. It signifies how many beats are in a bar, and what type of beat they are. The first number is the amount of beats and the second number is the type. So, 9/8 means nine eighth note beats per bar. However, 9/8 is a compound time signature so most people would see it as three dotted quarter notes per bar. This is because compound time has a 'triplet' feel, and three eighth notes make up one dotted quarter note; hence three dotted quarter notes per bar. Compound times have equivalent time signatures that are known as simple times - in this case, the equivalent simple time is 3/4, meaning three quarter notes per bar. Whilst a bar of this time has the same number of accents (in Western music), the feel and rate is very different. 3/4 only contains six eighth notes (but is not the same as 6/8), whereas 9/8 contains nine. The feel for 9/8 is tripletted, and 3/4 is straight. For example, a 9/8 bar could be vocalised as ONE-and-a TWO-and-a THREE-and-a, whilst a 3/4 bar would be ONE-and TWO-and THREE-and. I really hope this makes sense. It's very difficult to explain time signatures...

Stu Clone - King... how about Billy's Got Da Moonshine... Crazy 8z in da Bag...or... Shiznittle the Mofo... I mean those are just screaming 9/8! I'm partial to the shiznittle one myself...

Tastey - 9/8 is a time signature for music. Means the number of notes in a measure will equal 9 eighth notes.

Yoda - Beat me to the explaination, lol... cool website btw.

For scales try a website called cyberfret.com it has the fingering for major scales, minor scales. minor pentatonic, and all that. The secret to the guitar is once you learn a scale you can use it all over the neck. If you learn the fingering to the major scale you know all the major scales on the guitar. I don't know too much about variations on scales yet so I can't help you on that. I hope that helps!

Stu Clone how about Apocalypse (you really need to know where I'm coming from on this lol).... actually one of my fave bands has a section on their site where people can post their ideas for band names... maybe you could use one for your track? I'll try and dig the URL out for you....

stringG I put some basic theory pages on my site (not all finished yet though)... for major scales check this page... pick a root note and use the TTSTTTS formula. Hope this helps a bit!

hahahaha... compression illusion, imagination highway, good stuff...

unfortunately for the drummer, this 9/8 isn't a triplet feel, i suppose i should call it 9/16 to prep people for stranger divisions, it's more of a 6/16+3/16 kinda thing, but the accents are all over the place... 5 of the 6, and 2 and 3 of the 3, triplet-ing it just ruins the effect.

edit: michelle... was that "psycho betty" a name suggestion? heh heh. nice!

our local newspaper the eagle tribune just printed a story today on how extreme refused reunion for cable show. i guess vhi showed up at pat badgers house in groveland which is about 30 minutes from me to see if they could get back together for a one time only concert. nuno refused and interview, and gary was pissed when they showed up at his house in peabody. i guess they are going to show them being confronted by VH1 tonight. i guess paul geary and badger agreed but not nuno and gary. so the show should be interesting. Badger has an Alpaca farm, there is a photo of him with one, its so cute. he cut his hair, and he's in tribe of judah with gary and they won best new band at the boston music awards 2002. i guess gary thought cuz they are still playing in other bands that it didnt really go with the show, since most of the other bands arent playing at all.

i'm trying to keep it from turning into a DT type thing, but it sounds like it right now with just the 1 or 2 ideas in it... the places it's going in my head are TOTALLY not DT though, so i'm not real worried about that anymore.
