Yoda - Funk off - cool as fuck.. yeah it's a little loose but it's loose in a nice way.. IMHO when funk is too tight it can sound frigid. kinda like MezzoForte and those types.. essentially lift music.. and there's funk like Pick Up The Pieces by The Avaerage White Band.. which is loose but tight enough.. and grooves like stink.. so the guys that dissed your timing on this one... screw 'em.. they missed the vibe completely.. this tells me that they miss all the music 'cos they'll never be looking in the right place... nice one..

Into the Fire - lol... billiy fat bollox on rhythm guitar... lol.. seriously though.. nice big fat tone.. good tight riffing.. nice overall idea.. interesting key changes towards the end.. plenty of changes too so there's nice variety.. some very nice ideas within the solos to.. I see you started picking a little more these days... which is a good thing.. you lead tone is a touch 'dry' for my taste.. a lil' reverb [even a short one] would've been sweet.. but then.. it's not as if the lead guitar don't sit nice in the track... I like this track a lot.. you're gonna do good messing with us lot I can tell...

Missing You - nice vibe... one or two of the licks at the start don't sound like you really got hold of them.. nice ideas though.. at the end of the day.. technique gets better.. but if you are devoid of ideas you're screwed.. and you have a pile of ideas... great vibe change.. very Floydish... ow did you hold back like that.. shit I'd be gone by now... lol.. in the zone...ah.. there's the zone.. nice.. the solo grows well... I think one of the things helping o screw some of your licks [given your playing style] is a lack of 'sensitivity' effects wise.. like how distortion makes the neck feel 'sensitivy'... ever tried adding a compressor before the distortion pedal so you get a nice fat smooth signal into the dirt-box.. aah.. nice switch bringing the vibe down... now this would be a nice mooment to play more 'compositionally' and less like you're having a 'minor-pent-noodle'... the closing Vai-ish progression is nice... you could have reduced the previous section and grown this part out alittle more... again.. your lead tone.. for a track like this.. big fat reverb and deley is almost mandatory.. it fills the space when you're not playing.. in fact, you can 'play' the reverb and delay if you're smart with your licks.. I'll show you how to do this at my place..

when you come to mine bring these backing tracks with you if you want / can on CD.. we can mess with some ideas...

overall take on all three tracks.... very very good... you are coming along very nicely indeed...

Death cube, Delfino Pie, Sammy Andrews and Museman thanks a lot for your kind words, glad you enjoyed the tracks..

Museman you got it spot on, after listening back to AWMAWY i noticed the tapping section sped up and finished an eight note early.. im gunna work on that and post up a new cover soon..

by tomorrow ill have a cover of surfing with the alien here .. although i did cheat a bit.. i cant play the fast part half way through the song cleanly enough, so i tapped it instead of picking, i dont think the difference is that bad!

Also if anyone has a backing track for Starry night, ceremony, or Love thing could they email me (Guitarcake@yahoo.co.uk) so i cant do some more recordings..

Cheers

Darren

Yoda - oops forgot to mention -due to my ramblings - yup.. Sat 6th.. I have a few interesting experiments lined up for us too.. for me this is research for the material for the 2nd album.. if you're up to it - which I strongly suspect you are - I intend to write for two guitars slightly differently.. but based around our abilities.. along the lines of principle and 1st violin and the way that they interact in an orchestral sense... which - should we crack it live - piss off plenty a shredder...

interesting times are a foot..

ovation - yup.. I de-screwed the lab.. it turned out to be a corrupt file...

completed the mix to the Raft.. played it in the car... guess what... it sounds like shit.. lol.. the EQ is all up the shit [but the balance between the instruments is nice].. for a 1st pass though it's pretty good..

trutina - very true... I may change the names of those involved to protect their identities.. so I wont use the word 'me' all the time.. lol
astr0 - smartwebnutter is definately a carrot suit type.. he just wouldn't have the intelligence and style to know that carrot suites are out, and a tux with chicken legs is in..
do the stu - me talking about them is most likely a fleeting cry for fame by some distant connection.. I really have to admit to myself.. I am no one...

my mobe just rang... there was no one on the other end..

it was obviously for me

I am freaking out today!!! Both of my kids have serious peanut allergies and I am a Pbutter freak!!! I have been going without for 12 years now except on those rare occasions I was away from em for more than 48 hours. Just tasted a new product called peabutter made from some brown peas here in Canada, it won an award as new grocery product of the year last year. The stuff is fantastic!!! Tastes exactly like good old peanut butter (smooth style of course)!!! I am saved!!!

*Suprised Face* Sorry Matt *embarrassed* I forgot you...anyway in my FRUIT SUIT plan, I think you were a peach or an orange. :)

I too want to know what time the msn web cast thing is in European time cos hopefully I can get in there lol.

Right I had 5 hours of exams today with a 15 minute break between the 1st and 2nd exam , and then a 30 minute break between the 2nd and 3rd...my hand is so tired from writing all day lol.

But my mom gave me news that some guy that knows one of my previous web design clients, wants a website. So that helps towards my bright pink or transparent aqua Ibanez S-Series....

To whoever can see this, just a suggestion for a guest for the next round of G3 hijinks. Some of us "older" fans would love to see the following lineup next year: Satch-Vai-ALAN HOLDSWORTH. I'm older than most, but still too young to have seen Holdsworth live. It's not exactly convenient for me to jump on a plane to Greece, Japan, or even L.A. to see AH (I'm in Austin, TX) C'mon, Joe...the future of the electric guitar as we know it could be at stake!! ha ha, anyway, just a thought. Thanks for listening.

Chet god, Have you seen Brett Garsed live? That is as close to Holdsworth as most of us will ever get.

You are after all a lucky sod in Austin!!! You get to see Eric Johnson and Andy Timmons several times a year if you so desire!!!!!

lol I forgot to mention when I finished the exam I was in about 15 minutes from the end (Im a fast writer), I started sketching Satch & Co on the back page of my text book...obviously dressed in FRUIT SUITS . :)

My website is nearing completion. I'm putting some of my own Satriani inspired artwork on there for people to use as desktop backgrounds if they so wish. :) Hopefully I get a good response from the t2jer's and by Joe himself.

ugh I changed strings today (I thought 18 months was about long enough and the top E string was self oscillating)... I hate doing it. I know my guitar sounds & plays better afterwards, but it's those two or three days of breaking in that I can't stand. Self-cleaning strings for G3!

Hey Joe, speaking of changing strings... I guess Mike changes yours every night when you're on tour (a bonus for being famous!!!), what was it like when you were in the NOTE period, and what's your string-changing timeline when you're at home writing / chilling?

Have fun with the chat Americans! $$$rosoft won't let us Brits in (I even tried to use an open proxy in the US to see if it would work so I could tell you guys, but it didn't work :-( ) hopefully someone can copy and paste or do some screengrabs or something!

Lastly Joe again(!) why not set up a European G3 chat when you're here? I'll bet you guys get tired after shows and stuff, so maybe on a day off or something? Then all of Europe can potentially bombard you with questions! Yamboy - whaddyasay?!?!?!

Joeman9, that mustang sounds outrageously cool. Damn I envy you! hehehe.

also, on the typing-coordination thing, I have the same problem. When ever I write the word 'self' the l goes down before the e! I just can't coordinate myslef! hehe

Delfino, not quite. I believe what it actually means is that to be a fast/accurate guitarist, to be able to play exactly what you want, when you want, you need to know all the intervals all over the fretboard - knowing the notes doesn't matter until you come to writing out the standard notation of what you're playing, but you need to know what the note you're about to play is going to sound like. Hope that makes sense!
The Farting Gnome, thanks very much mate! I'll check out those details soon, and hopefully get me some tickets. That would be so awesome to see Toto live......have you seen the 25th anniversary DVD, live in Amsterdam? If not, get it now, cause it is the dog's nuts.

I have no Toto on cd, just 2 DVD's - I have a few CD's with Luke' on, and I saw the Toto anniversary DVD, so I took a gamble and bought it. What a gamble, It's really amazing!

Austin, I know nothing about Rush, other than they are Canadian and they are prog. rockers, or are they prog. metalers? Do they have a similar general vibe to anybody else that I might know?
OCPS470, I haven't tried Ernie Ball OLP guitars, just seen them advertised. Actually, I haven't tried any Ernie Ball guitars except the Axis Sport, which is really nice. I wish I had the money spare for a Luke!
Greyfox, do you have Joe's SBM album? Robert Fripp plays on Sleepwalk (track 6). He pioneered a new guitar-recording/chanelling technique. Also, unless I'm drasticaly mistaken, he played for a long time with King Crimson, the biggest progressive rock band ever to have recorded music. I don't own any of their stuff cause I havent investigated it yet, but by all accounts it's pretty amazing. Don't write-off Robert Fripp, he's an amazing musician.
liquidguitar, do you know all 5 pentatonic positions? say you are playing in Amin position 1, can you switch to Amin position 5 then Amaj position 5? (for example!). also, pentatonic substitution is kinda cool.

After that, modes of the major scale is the next important thing. I'm still working on it now.....it takes me ages to absorb modes and their correllation!

Ovation1, if anyone is going to know the answer to my question it's gonna be you....did Maestro Gilbert and Mariachi Sheehan have an unfortunate falling-out?
the strat o master, you don't want to be asking us what amp is better, you need to try some and decide for yourself. It depends on your budget too, but I would personally say that new Marshalls are a bit pants. Engl are quite cool, Hughes and Kettner are sweet, as are Carvin, Mesa, Soldano. Ibanez are better value for money than cheaper Marshall rigs, and of course the new Peavey JSX ought to kick some serious ass. Fender amps are all good.
UF Dean, good god, that is terrible news about the Doubletree next door to you! That's like taking a Porsche and turning it into a Ferrari......blaspheomy - feel free to laugh at the probable spelling errors! hehe
someone enlighten the rest of us - what did Joe have to say about Ninjas? i'm intrigued!
littlewing1908, greetings from a fellow-dorset-er! hehe. Ollyno1 is also from round here, Wimborne, to be precise, which is where Robert Fripp hails from. How cool is it that G3 is appearing in Bournemouth? We don't even have to go all the way to London! Amazing!
Olly, good to see you around again dude! Yeah I will be getting me some tickets as soon as the ink dries on the printing paper! I can't wait. I guess it'll be at the BIC, cuz the Pavillion isn't up to it any more. I can definitely catch up with you then!

Phrydom, I change my strings every 24 months or two years whichever comes first!!! LOL Actually I change about half a dozen high E's before getting around to the whole set. Another clue for me to change is when the G string has become so grungy it no longer looks metal!!!

Clarky:I felt you were keeping the cogs turniing while Trutina was in bad shape, thats what i meant, but after listening t your work the same goes, great stuff Clarky, from the part i heard,i,ll be buying yours & the T2J album when it gets released,Y know when y record music on yer ownio its a long haul, thats i guess what i meant by well done, may all your efforts shine.Go on yerself

Trutina:If its any consolation,i was floored for nearly 3 years from a virus, spent 2 of them sleeping mostly & couldnt walk more than 100 yards without passing out,the cure for me was forcing myself into hard labour for 6 months"NOT RECOMMENDED"for you i know, the side effects from the prescription the doctor ordered were for 1 growing tits amoungst others, lol,i opted for the later,i had nearly finished Paganini,s Moto perpertuo when it struck, maybe Pag Bag felt i was doing a bad job, lol, but i continued t write music in bed via an old Korg X3 that i had, hope that bit of news gives y a laugh,y sure as hell need a bit,i,m sure, take care bro n get well soon

r6rocker:Y have t meet my friend Mike after yer last post,we used t call him The Bionic Man,has more pins in him than a voodoo doll, lol.I could tell y a bit about his history, but i think its better coming from the horses mouth,He,s a cool cat has a son & still races pro,has built bikes from the age of godknows,is bike mechanic extraorinar, knows his shit bout cars 2 but bikes come 1st,y never know, maybe through this site y could meet up,I,ve a feeling about this!!

Ovation:Yip dude, its strange where music brings y sometimes,as my good friend Martin Furey once said "be careful what y wish for" little did i know i would feel so ignorant, until i was there,i knew nothing of Uzbekistan, man what amazing people, didnt like the 4 hours a day sleep bit much t make the gigs happen, but there y go,thats music for y,had my first earthquake during rehearsals 2,we used t have a train running over the rehearsal rooms back home & was thinking it was that, but after a while realized it was getting more violent & suddenly clocked onto the fact i wasnt in Scotland, lol. The Japanese have this sussed by building the houses inside with bamboo,am i right? It gives the structure more elasticity, where as Uzbek houses, hmmm, like others just get flattened, anyway got t shoot,i,m knackered, see y Sat or Sun dude

TASTEY:Hope alls good,i just felt the hole Zach n Satch thing was none of my biz & kept my mouth shut, however, its all past, done n dusted i hope & for one never want t see a dark day on the site like that again,
