Do the Stu - thanks for the advice on the G3 jam mix...I'll see what happens if I change the audio settings

Michelle - right on about VH! I actually like the Roth-era albums better in general, but Sammy is so much better live and seems like such a cooler person. I hope if the rumors that he's back are true that he'll play more of the earlier stuff than he used to. I saw them with Gary in '98 and he did a great job on the old stuff (Mean Street, Unchained, etc)

Just got my tix to see Eric Johnson in Boulder...2nd row, smack dab in the middle YES!!

Hey guys, go to jeffbeckbootlegs.com and listen to him playing "You Never Know". When I first heard it, I thought, "Hey, am I sure this isn't Vai playing here?"!

Joe says the hardest pieces for him to play are the mighty turtle head and the mystical potato head groove thing.

rusty dog,
did you just say oodalolly?! hahahahaha... been watchin a certain movie w/ foxes, turtles and a guitar playin rooster, eh? ;)

mikey
stern's fast solo stuff didn't really take me in, he ended up playing a lot of chromatic filler ideas, and i just don't like that kinda thing. he had a lot of great licks though, and he really had a talent for playing with intensity at low volume. the way he used volume swells was amazing.

mikesb - thanx for the band tips... I got no idea why but I have a sudden craving for Close to the Edge, Yours is no Disgrace, Awaken, Going for the One, etc....

The Battle of the Bulge - easy answer is true... lol.. 'cos here in my lounge is a big pile of books showing all of the troop movements, timings, dispossitions... lol....

Shogun - and 2112... Spirit of the Radio, Jacobs Ladder....

My Goju Ryu sensei was traditional Okinawan style in his teaching methods.. kinda impressing the importance on discipline and restraint.. "never hurt anyone unless you really have to"

Shotokan was ok at first but I fell out of love with the style and with club.. the style seems very one dimmensional [unless that's just because of the teaching methods] unlike Goju which had all kinds of applications physical, spritual both in and out of combat situations.. The Shotokan club [especially as I made it through to the middle belts] began to feel like a factory.. "gis the money... do 200 push ups.. bye ! ! !"

eta / shogun - when comparing one martial art against another I completely dissagree with both of you... it is never the style that is effective... it's the fighter... and I know guys with no martial arts training that would rip an avarage black belt to shreds and not break a sweat.. why?? becasue they are naturally seriously tough people.. and that is a state of mind... yes the training and fitness will improve someones ability.. but a black belt with all the technique in the world my not have the stomach to fight for real.... and a genuinely tough person is prepared to take quite a lot of punishment to get at you and take you down.. and if they are very fit and / or strong and / or trained in combat.. then they are transformed from being tough to being a complete fucking nightmare...

style make absolutely no difference.. the individual does..

Luke - not only WW II.. I've had an interest for many years in military history.. Babylon, Greece, Rome, Dark Age, Crusades, Napoleonic.. thru to today... I've loads of books etc on this stuff... visited battle fields.. facinating stuff..

I have an interest but I'm no expert..

olly - when I've figured out which one to go to I'll shout...
Phryg - no worries... if you need me to get stuff for you just shout...
uf dean - here in the UK we take footie very seriously up to and including riot police intervention.. lol..

the tips.... no charge.. lol

Greyfox88 - It is true that many players can use their effects as a shield to hide behind. By saying that you sound crap when you can hear yourelf pick leads me to believe that you need to work on your picking technique. However, the thing to remember is that effects are exactly that - effects. The natural sound of a guitar is totally clean and dry - not heaps of dirt and delay.

if u think about it, the saying, may sound crap but amazing on efffects aint exactly true. you can pound on the instrument and the effects won't put the notes in order for u. effects just changes the sound of guitar from. bowwwww to WOOOOOOWWW. effects are just replicas of actual amplifiers and cabs so on which means it's the same as owning many amps.

Well, I see what you mean, but it's not strictly true. What effects actually do is alter the wave form of the instrument, creating a different sound.

exactly, meaning if u can't fret the notes and string them up to make a song and skillful fingering the effects don't change it, just creates a different sound.

why didnt they make a DVD of the G3 tour with Petrucci??

I caught the show in Ft.Worth and it was awesome. I dont know why they would make one with that show-off Malmsteen, but not make one with an innovator like Petrucci who sounds more like modern metal.

Greyfox88: I'm a frim believer in effects. I can't stand playing through a rig that's got a dry crappy tone. For me, it sounds horrible, and i find i am not able to play as well. I know there are a ton of people out there who have the less is more attitude. It's all in what works for you. Effects work for me, they allow me to play the style, and give the feel I'm after. I can't do that with a guitar plugged straight into a head. I've walked into music stores and plugged into the best Marshall head they had, and i thought it sounded like crap. I have no shame in saying that I rely on my rack and tone to play. It's what works for me. I wouldn't worry about what anyone alse has to say about using effects or not. Do what works for you.

Fretslayer: I am in a love affair with guitar effects. I get annoyed when hippies come up saying, "dude, all I do plug in my Strat in my marshall and turn up the overdrive. Perfect tone, dude. Thats what Jerry did." So? Who cares what Jerry did? Effects add so much more depth to the music. Try playing Starry Night without effects. Its genius and hard work to create effects that fit into the song making it full. If Vai wasnt using effects, his music would be half as good.

Joe I know it's a way off, but we don't get to see you so often in the UK as the US fans do (understandably, as you live there!!), so I'm hoping the G3 concerts are going to be huge. I have seen a couple of reviews from US shows where people wanted to see your set be a little longer, if you didn't plat 9 or 10 songs I would be seriously gutted as would everyone else I think. I saw an old poll on Vai.com asking people for their opinions on how long the show should be and if it was too long, without exception everyone said it could not never be long enough, and the more you played the happier we will be, well just remember that man ;-) Anyone who says the show is too long (and I've never heard that once) clearly isn't a fan. You play until your fingers drop off Joe, it'll make our year!! Still refreshing satriani.com and vai.com every hour to make sure the tickets for B'ham haven't gone on sale yet- it has to be done!! Cheers!

Jazzy_Boy I woludn't go as far as saying that about steve man, co's you know what he can do with just wood and metal. However I fully support those comments about effects in music cause is a large part of good production and in the end it does comunicate diffrent stuff into, atleast, my playing. Also, I loved that comment of fretslayer of hippies hahaha! that's something I hear a lot and love it co's it's fun and true, hate it co's it's stupid to keep it that way all the time.

hey joe, hey guys

i got another satch interview for you guys.

Joe Satriani on music classes-

" i had music lessons in high school in 10th grade and walked out after the second day! However, the following year i was ready but, like an idiot, i'd lost a year. so i started in 11th grade with this teacher called Bill Westcot( vai took his classes the following year). Bill was this very gifted musician, primarily a piano player who could play a wide variety of other instruments. Bill taught us strict music theory in the classical tradition. we had to learn how to sight sing, sight read, how to write a string quartet, orchestrate and master at least one instrument we couldnt play when we started. he was the person who told me, " you had better write something every day, because in a couple of years you might find out that your not such a hot guitar player, then what are you gonna do?". after a little teenage huffing i started to write, focus on understanding the theory he was giving me and try and import it into my experiences. i started to bridge the gap between scales and modes and what i was hearing. after that i took the advanced theory course where we got into pitch axis, and we began to listen to pieces using it. the heavens opened! when i was younger i remember listening to people like emerson lake and palmer and liking what they were playing, but i didnt have a clue what they were doing. but 9 months later , im listening to it and saying " oh my God! thats mixlydian mode". that guy trained me to listen to something and know what it was. it was wonderful.......Joe

a lot more interviews to come if you want more. i got interviews from both satch and vai, and steely dan if you want.

enjoy :-)

also, i dont get it why they didnt make a G3 dvd with petrrucci either. on his rock disapline dvd they showed g3 footage of john playing three different songs in three different locations. that means they filmed three different shows, they must of filmed the whole show coz if they only filmed the three songs, if john messed up on them( not very likely i know but if he messed up on them) they wouldnt have any replacement footage for the dvd. they must have footage. therefore they can make a dvd.

G3 with Petrucci for dvd release!!!!!!!!!!!!
