e bow - Another reason why we may not have heard much about the upcoming album is that Joe also did a lot of work on it before the G3 tour. This album process was spread out over a longer period of time than the others...although I guess we knew about EOC for a long time too. Anyway...as you said, I'm sure we'll have more info in a week or two.

I doubt this album will sound like JS95. It'll probably be a rock album with some blues elements.

Joe has released songs with vocals on FIABD and JS95.

The Satch Tapes DVD is probably geared towards diehard JS fans. I doubt Joe rereleased it strictly because he wanted to (at least not this quickly), but T2J as a whole has been bugging him to put it on DVD for the past few years. That may have made him realize that there's still a market for his old stuff.

The anthology is not there for Satch fans specifically. It's geared towards guys like John Q. Yngwiefan who went to a G3 gig to see Yngwie but ended up being impressed by Satch. The Anthology is also out there for guys who think "I've heard a lot about that Joe Satriani guy...hmmm, maybe I should buy an album or two to see if he's any good."

G3 is, always has been, and always will be Joe's thing. Vai and Malmsteen are not equal partners, although the royalties for these releases are probably split 1/3, 1/3, 1/3. If you go to a record store, the G3 releases will be filed under Satriani before they'll be filed under Vai or Malmsteen.

The anthology has the largest potential audience (millions of nonfans). The G3 releases have the next-largest potential audience, as they appeal to fans of three different guitarists. Joe's new album is next, as it will only appeal to Satch fans. The Satch Tapes probably has the smallest potential audience (diehard fans).

When promoting new releases, Sony/Epic doesn't care about diehard fans. Joe could release a new album every week for the rest of the year, and the 50 people who read T2J every day would buy each and every one of them with no promotion whatsoever.

Sony cares more about new fans and nonfans (as far as promotion is concerned). If a potential customer walks up to a CD rack in a music store and sees Joe's anthology, the G3 2003 CD, and Joe's new studio album, the customer has to make a decision on what to buy. The customer may end up walking away because he is confused by all of the new releases. That's a lost sale, which doesn't help anyone.

If he only sees one new release, the customer will buy it without much question.

Spreading releases out as far as possible (six releases in five months, in this case) will prevent lost sales in the situation I described above.

mikesb - Thanks for the extra info. It's cool that you can always add to a conversation by saying "I interviewed him a while back and..."...LOL. ;-)

Things are still the same today. Joe has indirectly said he's the G3 "boss" in several recent interviews (for G3 2001 and G3 2003). Good for Joe...G3 is his idea after all. I have a feeling this keeps guys like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page away from the tour, though, which is a bit of a bummer (although I bet Joe would have no problem with going on first if these two guitarists were on the G3 tour with him...but there are still a ton of other situations where Joe probably isn't as flexible).

ive just booked my G3 tickets for the 29th june at the royal albert hall in the 13th row..............two gigs over two nights.

JS JS Good luck man! I wish I was in a band, except I think if I was in a band I'd be performing in more pubs than churches. People in pubs and bars have been drinkin so their not as "on the ball" lol. Although performing in a church would have to be a must because of the capacity.

962: eugenes trick bag was impossible in the film as they dramatized it however u say it. however the song is possible to play but is quite hard it involves sweep picking if u mastered it and alot of scaling the neck.steve vai actually played the song while the guy pretended to play it. the way he played it int he film is impossible as he goes from one end to another. the actual one is just like a pentatonic scale or somthing. i got it tabbed out and my guitar teacher can play it.

yeah I know Steve played it....that's why it's on Steve's record. And I know it was dramatised for the movie etc etc, and yeah if you're good at sweeping then it's playable. But it's still difficult. I had a look at the tab for it too, and yeah my guitar teacher can semi-play it. It doesn't get round the fact that it's a complete ass of a piece, and it's impossible for me anyway! I look forward to hearing your cover dude! Enjoy G3, I know I will....watching Joe and Vai play gives me those rare occasions where I can totally 'indulge' in the music without having to analyse whether or not I could play it cuz I know I never will do it justice! hehe

To be back at work on the 25th you would have to leave the UK on the 24th, missing Mr Beck. The first UK G3 date is in Manchester, a day before you see Jeff Beck for the first time, so it's not going to work. You need to tell your supervisor that you booked the air-tickets when you were told it would be okay and it would cost you a couple of hundred bucks to cancel them cuz they're e-tickets....make up some crazy story like that!

JS JS - Guitar Player magazine is supposed to have a lot of Joe stuff in their April issue. I don't know if it's out yet. If it isn't, it should be out soon.

The harmony hut jam that you mentioned takes place in the Harmony Hut, which is one of Steve's studios. It isn't a guitar shop...
