Noppa - Wish You Were Here, for me at least, seems to have a very rare quality.. the deepest elements of the spirit that drove the creative process actually made it to tape...

and for that reason.. that album will never become 'dated'..

Yoda - interesting stuff.. I'm really glad that my music is triggering all the right things in you.. even if you don't obey the rules when harmonising the voices taking part in the chord progression.. the modulation techniques etc can still be applied.. you're right too.. you already have a great array of compositional tools available to you.. going straight to the new key is an option.. but only 'an' option... the main thing to consider when you reach a moment within the composition where "it is time to go somewhere else" is - what effect do you want to achieve? a dramatic and sudden change?.. a slow meandering evolution into the new key?.. gradual dissipation of energy?.. a moment that ramps into a climax?.. answer this question at the moment of change and then you'll know the methods to explore to create the desired effect...

Take a look at the transition between the 1st and 2nd movements of The Raft of the Medusa.. there is a modulation from Em to C#m
the reason for the modulation is because I needed to be in C#m ready for the appearence of the 'big riffs'.. so the driver behind the modulation was a technical one driven by the compass of a 7-string.. Em was a good starting point.. the dynamic had to grow and become more sinister.. C#m [the heaviest of all keys] is a bit of a fave of mine for "les riffage pour la pit du mosh".. so I needed to get there.. I could have chosen to make the transition within the 2nd movement but I did not.. I chose to make the change purely in volume within the movement because I thought it would be more effective give the situation.. so I determined that the modulation had to occur earlier.. before the start of the 2nd movement..

here's a lil' analysis question for you... what method did I employ to make the key change from Em to C#m in the transition between the 1st and 2nd movements of The Raft of the Medusa?

the answer is surprisingly simple.. and the modulation is almost invisible to the listener...

Miranda - my best wishes go out to you both... I know you'll be talking to Bill.. tell him that Clarky has reviewed his tracks.. if you wish I can e-mail you my comments.. you can print it and read it to him.. he'll most likely revive for no other reason than to make you stop punishing him with my mundane ramblings.. lol..

once again.. my best goes out to both of you..

do the stu - he's an ol' boy now so it's more like "where's me pipe and slippers.."
MikeSB - those were awesome years.. going to gigs almost every week.. the scene at the time was just kicking.. here's a little list of some of the NWOBHM bands I saw..

Pryin Mantis, Tygers of Pang Tang, Angel Witch [around the 1st album time], Saxon, Def Leppard [1st album time], Iron Maiden [before 1st single time], Girl, Girlschool, Rock Godess, Fastway, Motorhead [1st / 2nd album time], Javelin, Samson, More, Inner City Unit, White Angel, Krokus, Titan, Judas Piest [although they were kinda more established and top dogs at the time.. ]

geez I'm sure there's more.. I was like.. home from school.. denim cut-off on.. out to a gig.. and it lasted for quite a few years...

come on guys - do we really have to revert to all the crap again?..

Trutina is deep in the shit.. that is the stuff that hurts for real... all this prissy e-combat is just stupid.. not worth getting upset about cos most of you guys will never meet face to face.. and if you did you'd most likely like each other anyhow.. and these silly battles are not exactly life threatening...

but Trutina is deep in the shit.. and this is for real...

priorities.....

eta - I feel 80 cos ive been gigging so much lately that I am just so frigging knackered!!! The type of rock I like is stuff like G'n'R, Metallica (who are metal really), Skin, Thunder and the alike.

Nottingham gig - I am also going to the nottingham gig. I think me and another T2J member are going to hook up for a beer. Anyone else interested???

Miranda - Even tho I am not a religious man I WILL be praying for Bil and wishing him a speedy and healthy recovery. I will also be praying for some luck for the both of you too. By the way I am the guy that had a snowglobe sent to your house from the disney store online and that Bil then sent to me at Xmas just so you have an idea of who I am).

Sorry guys but for all of you who may have missed clarky's last post i wanted to post it again as it really stands tall:

shogun - The Raft mix down #3 - over all a little toppy.. good balance though.. my ears are still not 100% de-snotted which I guess accounts for the excess top.. I need to make one or two small alterations to the automated parts [strings and brass mainly] and re-eq the rhythm guitars [getting those to sit just right in the mix without vanishing or over-powering everything is proving to be a bit of a headache.. marks out of 10 --- I'll give it a 7.. so I'm getting into the 'minor tweak' zone.. a few little adjustments and I'll be done..

this long drawn out cold has proved to be a real handicap... and I think that this has been caused by people going to work that shouldn't thereby infecting everyone else so that same virus is just going around and around -and I guess I'm as guilty as everyone else on this...

but my paper is done. Yes! I just realised that Hard Liqour works better than caffiene sometimes. You guys should try it sometime. :)

And yes, for clearance sake....I am not Pino Guy (as Mr. News pointed out). Maybe we will know who Pino is in Ten years. He will probably tell us his name or something if talk to Joe is still up and running.

Clarky.....you are extremely talented...why are'nt you living on an estate, filty rich, shaking uncontrollably from ragged drug abuse Ozzy-style? LOL

I'm assuming everyone is familiar with Mick & Dave's Satriani backing track website? Anyways, I tried to download the backing track for "Cryin" but now I can't find it anywhere on my GF's computer !! I have it on my own PC, but that is sitting in a closet collecting dust. Why can't I find it? Any PC geeks out there that could help me locate the file?

Nobody's fighting. Nobody is ignoring the true fight, as you stated, which is indeed the wishes we all share for trutina. This place has already brought us all together and for that i am thankful. There are many great people here who share their support and who call upon us for help and needs.

I initally wasn't going to say any of this but i thought that i needed to say again my support.

Mick, I knew you would like it. It's funny they put that part in there with Virgil. Guess all that pent up *energy* is what makes him such a great drummer.

Clarky - Well, what I'm hearing is everything drops out except for a high E drone in the strings. Cue thunder storm/whale song, and after a bit there's a G# note in the bass and then it changes to a C#. I guess what you did could either be seen as a perfect cadence into C# minor (where the E drone creates the minor third), or the G# was there to major the tonic chord of E minor and put it into first inversion, so that when it goes down to C# minor it's just a shift to the submediant - the relative minor. Is that right? By the way, I played Pete Callard one or two tracks off of Shredz today and he loved it. He called it "real neo-classical"... lol. He said you get a very pure sound (in fact, he thought the lead sounded a little like a keyboard!) and have great control. They were pretty much his exact words. So, thanks to me, you've gained another fan! lol

I can't wait for filmin to be over of this media project...this short film is so stressful its making me ill. We had an actor back out today, we had our media teacher take one of our actors during a film shoot, and we had the batteries in the camera run out while in the basement. I got a splitting headache and got referred to a superior member of staff by my ICT teacher even though I told him before hand that I wasn't going to be in his lesson.

I got home and put the live in SF dvd on, well atleast my headaches gone :)
