eta - Well, thanks for the encouragement. I'm a little apprehensive about the aural exam, but the others should be a breeze. I have Grade 8 violin so my sight reading's pretty good. ACM is the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. That's where I'm studying for my BA.

Clarky - Well, at a 'contemporary music' school, they assume that virtually no fucker can read a dot of music. And they're right! lol. There are one or two exceptions, myself included, who get really fucking bored in the lectures. I still go though, because non-attendance just looks bad no matter how good you think you are.

Stacy, my husband had to wait a few months till he finally got in the safety course, but it was well worth it. They gave him lots of driving tips he would have never known otherwise. Most ppl. just get on and ride. For example - I don't ride, but I thought that riding in the middle of the street avoided the bumps and whatnot caused by wear & tear of other traffic. WRONG! Driving in the middle of the tire tracks makes you more susceptible to hitting oil spots from cars & trucks, which will send you on your ass quick stopping at an intersection. Stuff like that is always good to know. lol!

DCK, my job here is done. lmao! Good luck wiff yer teefs!

Mikeysan sounds better than Mikesan. To me it sounds like somebody from Wisconsin "Ahh yeah, dat Mikesan dope!" lmao! See, my brain just don't do a Japanese accent! lmmfao! Ah well, I'm Irish, and I couldn't talk with an Irish accent if my life depended on it. lol! Thanks for the tips for my daughter. I've copied down everything so far, and I'll go over the tips with her & Dave later tonight. I'll listen to All Alone again, which I know is a killer song, but S.M.F. - c'mon dude! That's the shit! lol! Now all I have to do is track down the cd. Car? Basement? Hmmm, think, think, think...

et to String g? lol!

Mark And Brian (the radio morning show I listen to) had a bagpiper in the studio this morning because it's St. Patrick's Day. He was playing some great rock songs. He did EVH's Eruption...LOL. It sounded AWESOME.

He played all kinds of stuff...AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, etc...

Well, I just thought I'd share that. I should really get back to studying. ;-)

Shogun Vai: Personally, I'd love to take a ride in Corsair or a Mustang, but they're awfully hard to find these days outside of museums. Do you live in Australia?

Michelle: On the subject of increasing finger strength, I'd simply suggest driving in any major city. Most drivers seem to have no problems at all in manipulating their middle finger !

Do the Stu: Yes, but did the Bagpiper play "The Attitude Song" on the pipes? ;- )

I'm of Scots-Irish descent, but my stomach is definitely not. Love potatoes, wouldn't touch cooked cabbage with a 20 foot pole.

Anyone see in the new Rolling Stone they reviewed the Seattle Hendrix Tribute Concert. They gave it a great write up. Too bad they did not review the S.F. one that Joe played at. Then they would have had to acknowledge his existance. They havent reviewed one of his albums since Crystal Planet.

I gave All Alone another listen. To me, All Alone = Cryin'. It has that same 'rip yer hear out' vibe. Now S.M.F. on the other hand has that low down, dirty, stankass, face distorting, make your vital organs bleed kind of funk. Knowhatimsayin'? lol!

Powerslave, you do that in the city here and you'll be dodging bullets. They don't play that shit 'round here. lol!

what kind of finger strength are we talkin about here? finger independance? ability to hold down the fingers nice and solidly, or just plain fingertip hardness?
i suppose it isn't very encouraging if your kids are hoping for real quick payoff, but it will really come with practice. in my first years, i had little to no finger independance, weak fingers, and weak pads. after the years, it just isn't a problem anymore. i play harder than i ever played before, and i haven't gotten a blister for years.

if there's one thing i can suggest for helping them develop, encouraging practice and acknowledging progress will certainly be cool.

mmmm... good times. just remembering the first time i got a really good compliment from my mom. still waiting for the day when i can get my dad to say that it sounded good w/o me asking :)

quick mock-t2j poll,
what was your first good compliment that really made you realize you were getting better, not just to yourself, but others too, and what was it?
back to the one from my mom: i'm playing one day when she walks into the house, i was recording the stu version of star spangled banner. she came in and said something along the lines of "oh, i didn't realize you were here, i thought that was the record playing"

edit: then again, my mom DOES watch american idol, so what does she know? lol ;)

Graham, all of the above. She's never played before, so...she's got nuthin'. lol! No game at all. lol! My son has a bit of a spark and is already trying to ear play Iron Man. The other night he played the the first 5 chords and I knew what it was immediately. I asked him who taught him that, and he said he figured it out on his own. lol! I called my husband in to listen, and it turned into a cool mini-teaching session. We were both suprised that he figured it out. They both want to be instant players instead of learners. I think my daughter got the slow down blues. lol!

edit: string g, it means 'you to' (in my world anyway) pertaining to picking All Alone over S.M.F. lol!

Geez, that sounds exactly like my expression after I got the bill for a root canal.

I hadn't voted on any of the songs....is voting still open? And I couldn't pick between Ceremony and Hordes of Locusts....they're both too good.

Clarky: congrats on the chart-topping. You deserve it bro!
Mikesan: damn, dude...you change names more often than I buy new guitars lately haha
Stu Clone: same here. My friend Cory was the one who got me into playing. He had been messing around on the guitar for about 6 months before I even got one, and it was another 6 months before I started to actually even pick the thing up. He came over to visit one day while I was home on break and he thought that I had found a live version of Santeria but it was me playing and singing with my acoustic.

Joeman9 that must be why Joe uses a double neck on that song, one is probalby normal and the other is probably tuned to e. that is weird but cool. lol. but can you play that whole song? the solo has a pretty fast part.
