the issue isn't necessarily electric vs. acoustic, the issue is whether someone who sounds good with all their gear will still sound good when you take away their noise gates and compressors and stuff like that.
i very much agree with that assessment of guitarists and electric musicians in general. if the musician only sounds good with all their stuff in, they're kinda limited sound wise, eh? and what's the point of listening to someone that always sounds exactly the same in song structure, tone, and ideas?
[coughING]if only there was someone like that i could think of as an example[/coughING]
tee hee... no real offense intended. very talented musician, but i still don't like most of his stuff.
edit... "nose gates" ?!?!

scrawn, ure getting me. if ure shat on electric, don't expect to be good on acoustic. same way. if ure shat on acousitc don't expect to be good on electric coz of effects. that what i'm saying. fx don't make u totaly skillfully amazing. just a new tone for ure guitar. and it really covers up tiny mistakes like dead notes etc.

stu clone. absoulty what i'm trying to say. but kinda.. not on about the tone of guitar but the skills u have. i reckon the skills u have playing through distortion don't change the skills u have unplugged.. much that is. there is still the tiny dead notes mistake that gets covered up. mind u. distorion , everyone uses it and u have to bear in mindm it's a effects too.
yngwie is good. i agree with it. thing is, i'm just about the same on plugged and unplugged, just the amplified sound. my unplugged playing skill sounds the same to plugged playing skill. just not plugged in thats all.....

hey Joe, i have a good question for u:
do you know what can i do if i have tendinitis?
i have been playin for a half and a year , and i stopped because f tendinitis.
it hurts, i wanna play but i can't my hand is not at its best.
it happened because i used to play minor scales at 6th string starting for example.. on 10 fret !!! ,(d minor scale)
is it correct to play in all strings?
my english is not good.
please help me.

Re Acoustic vs Electric
As Steve Stevens told me in an interview, "if a dude can shred on acoustic, he will sound good on electric but the opposite ain't necessarily true"
This from a man who sounds fantastic on both. Believe it or not, Steve's main influences growing up were a folky from his neighborhood Phil Ochs, and as he put it all the obscure prog coming out of the UK!!! (He cited Hatfield & the North and Egg amongst others) As far removed from Billy Idol as you could possibly get!!!

i play acoustic, unplugged and plugged in a fair share. in fact, i play more unplugged and acoustic than plugged. i only plug in wen i'm in school . and thats for a double lesson. shall i ditch the amp and go acoustic? just to prove to me friends i can play. i mean.. i'm usuing acousitc more now coz i'm learning eugenes trick bag.
tendicitis.. that is bad... i have no idea for a solution. stop playing for a while?

Right on re the practicing Cube!! As a matter of fact early in ones playing life, acoustic playing is almost necessary to help develop proper vibrato and more importantly string damping techniques.. You just can't get away with too much sloppiness on an acoustic.
And that practicing can certainly include non-plugged in practice on an electric guitar as well!!!

mikesb thanx... i just like it because i use .13 on my acoustic and .09's on my electric..eitherway i play acoustic everyday..
well the apple clinic went well.... garageband is pretty cool for $60 the loops sound awesome... all in all its a fun little pile of soft ware..

Greyfox88 - Interesting question. Personally, I tend to play ENTIRELY different types of music on acoustic vs. electric. When I'm playing acoustic, I'm thinking more along the lines of Cat Stevens (simple chords/song structure, focusing mostly the lyrics). When I'm plugged in, I want to be Joe, John Christ (Danzig), Angus Young (AC/DC), and Ron Thal (Bumblefoot) (all at once preferably) - basically crazy but controlled hard rock. Honestly, though, I'm not all that skilled, and I think it definitely shows on the acoustic when I try more complex things.
Webmaster/Joe - thanks for the longer sound clips. My first impression when listening to them was that the new album is going to be heavier than I initially thought, which is fine by me.

Alexandre: oooh! Surprises! I will, once I get time to go into the city (during business hours)
So only two people have ever used the words Byzantine and Byzantium? I used to think it was "bighs-an-teen" My interest was aroused by some cymbals I found under the name "Byzantine" which after searching the 'net I found no info on. The guy in the shop pronounced it as "bighs-un-tine" however on Age of Kings it was pronounced "biz-n-teen" so I did a search for pronunciation in dictionaries but the clearest result I could get was the "American" version (biz-un-teen) and the "British" version which was unclear as to whether it was the same as my original idea or the guy in the shop's. ("tein" - is that teen, tine or tane? I want a phonetic alphabet!)
So currently, I call it By-zn-teen and By-zan-tee-um. Any scholars of English care to make any input? I know they're not words used in common language.
I only have 8 fingers.

Greyfox88 - At school, it usually isn't about proving to others that you can play... unless there's another great guitarist there that can outplay you, in that case you've gotta prove it to yourself that you're better. Personally there are a few things that people find impressive at my school:
1.) Shred and tapping. Pretty much going nuts as incoherantly as possible
2.) Really nice sounding fingerstyle songs
and, the kicker
3.) Playing songs that they know

I think playing on the accoustic takes more practice obviously because of string gauge and action are usually much different than on an electric....so I would think that practicing on an accoustic will make you a more precise and cleaner player on the electric....
