civgeek You said "I would have to say the big point is that most people don't say they play because of beck or johnson or guy. They play 'cause they heard jimi."

I know one person up there that didn't, Robert Johnson, he died over 4 years before hendrix was born, get your facts right. And if you ask Zakk Wylde, James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, who inspired him most, it's Tony Iommi. Steve Vai has always gave credit to Frank Zappa, or right under him Jimmy Page. You see more of Tony's rythem playing in modern metal and hard rock than you do Hendrix's. Tony did more for metal than hendrix did. I think really hendrix just kept his genre alive in his point of time, which has heighten when he died. I realize he has inspired countless people, but I'm not one of those who belives if hendrix hadn'tlived then no one would beplaying a guitar, that's a radical thinking. That's something a die-hard fan would say or someone who would say that acting cool. That's the reason he's around, not nessisary because of his playing. If he would have lived, 10 years down the road he could of just made mediocre albums. i do not think that he would of been the #1 dog in the guitar community and kept putting out origional material that would of been accepted by the mainstreem,I don't believe that.

I am from Northwestern Indiana (Merrillville/Crown Point/Gary area).

Joe typically comes though Chicago (but not with DP this time).

I know that would be a hike for you, but it would be worth the trip.

If you notice, the main group of people that hendrix inspired was in that day and age, now not as mnay people site him as an influence. people are starting to site people like Randy Rhoads, James Hetfield, Kirt Hammett, Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan, Steve Vai, etc. Then by everyones terms here, is influencial=best? I don't like it when mags post best list, who's to say who's the best? To say one artist influenced every genre of music and should be crowned god is absured. No one has done that.

PREZ - (long sigh) Ok , i'v come to realize that we are not going to agree on this nor is this going to go away. So, I understand your point on Vai crediting Frank. That makes sense they were two peas in a pod. - strange birds. However Vai doesn't play any Zappa covers in his set. He does play Hendrix. Coincidence?

Obviously Johnson, through chronology alone, couldn't have been influenced by Hendrix. My point was that if you trace influences back more people, not just big names, give credit to Hendrix than the others. Including people outside of rock.

Tonni Iomi is going to influence any play who likes that darker sound whether they realize it or not, but Tonni doesn't cross genres as much as Hendrix does.

And Page, well we don't want to start that aguement. Suffice it to say ..He was a good songwriter. I personally never got the whole Zepplin thing. That's my dad. I definately wouldn't put Page down as a great PLAYER, but a very good writer.

I hope that clarifies. It's good to see you sticking to your guns, but let's move on to something new like Meatloaf's influence or the influence of the BeeGees.

Have a good day.

Matt

The Prez - I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU MAN!, Guitarists, artists, nobody can say that one person is better than the other because there are an infinate ways of comparing people. Like you couldn't just say... This guitarist was better than that guitarist cause he had a better time and was richer. It's all good!

Mikesb - Thanx for the band budgie! My girlfriends pop knows the drummer... they play down my way sometimes... check out DoGZuKi if you get the time.

civgeek - thanx for the website man, i think that picture just says it all... I should come back to that in a couple of months and try again...

The trip between Chicago and Cincy is about 6 hours or so - granted, that is a long way to go for a concert - but it would be worth it.

Joe regularly makes a stop in Chicago. My sister is in Indy and couldn't make it to his guitar clinic (even though I begged her to go to get a few pictures and an autograph - apparently someone needed to work).

another stupid joke from gramps:

The Juggler --------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Pennsylvania State Trooper pulled a car over on I-81 about 2 miles North of the PA/MD State line. When the Trooper asked the driver why he was speeding, the driver answered that he was a magician and a juggler and he was on his way to Harrisburg to do a show that night at the Zembo Shrine Circus and didn't want to be late. The Trooper told the driver he was fascinated by juggling, and if the driver would do a little juggling for him that he wouldn't give him a ticket. The driver told the Trooper that he had sent all of his equipment on ahead and didn't have anything to juggle. The Trooper told him that he had some flares in the trunk of his patrol car and asked if he could juggle them. The juggler stated that he could, so the Trooper got three flares, lit them and handed them to the juggler. While the man was doing his juggling act, a car pulled in behind the patrol car, a drunk got out and watched the performance briefly, he then went over to the patrol car, opened the rear door and got in. The Trooper observed him doing this and went over to the patrol car, opened the door and asked the drunk what he thought he was doing. The drunk replied, You might as well take my ass to jail, cause there's no way in hell I can pass that test"

Hey Joe (or anyone else important),

Hope you guys produce a live DVD from the 'Evening with Joe Satriani' tour later this year. The G3 DVDs are OK but not enough if you're looking for a 2hr satch fest. I need to hear more live SBM and ITLIS- Starry Night from the Denver G3 DVD really kicked my ass hard and made it straight onto my personal 'best of' compilation.

Anyhow - here's hoping for at least an hours worth of Satch at the Manchester Apollo on the 24th. ;)

Warning- this post contains material that might be offensive to non-Metallica fans. It is also a very long post, so you might want to skip it if you’re short of time.

Metallica gave a concert here in Sweden a few days ago, and the reviews were lyrical. I thought I’d post one of them for all of you that actually still like them lol. I didn’t see the show myself, although the reviews almost made me wish I’d been there. I translated this from Swedish, so any misunderstandings or whatever comes from me lol.

Metallica Part 1 Location: Ullevi, Gothenburg Sweden. Audience: Ca 60 000. Length: About two hours and 20 minutes. Best: "One" – once again. Worst: Apart from a few less brilliant choices of songs, the sound in the beginning of the concert. Question: Hey- what about Dyer’s Eve?

1. Blackened
After an introduction with shaky sound the opening riff from ”And justice for all” explodes in a hail storm of crazy riffs and banging drums.
2. Fuel
None of the groups brighter moments, and despite the nice fires on stage and committed singing from Hetfield this bagatell never comes close.
3. Harvester of sorrow
So heavy that the opening riff would be enough to cause lumbago, and still six minutes of finest metal remains. Kirk’s solo excesses at the end feels quite unnecessary though.
4. Welcome home (Sanitarium)
A caressing nightmare, always welcome, even if ”Fade To Black”- which was played in Copenhagen- is marginally better.
5. Frantic
The audience feedback is massive in the beginning and the end, but as in Copenhagen much of the intensity gets lost in the straggly sound.
6. For whom the bell tolls
The first real ten scorer of the night. The Ernest Hemingway-interpretation is introduced with Robert Trujillo’s skillful bass and ends in a granade shower of piercing guitars. Absolutely brilliant.
7. I disappear
Hangs on the edge of unnecessity, but the new balladintro and some really serious groove stops this soundtrack contribution from going over.
8. St Anger
In spite of twenty-some riffs and time changes this version feels unusually concentrated and complex.
9. Sad but true
As always, bulldozer-like and full of calories.
10. Creeping death
It’s starting to get repetitive to award full score to the single from ”Ride the Lightning”, but as this is one of the absolute best metal songs ever recorded, anything else would be a total underratement.
11. Battery
After a pre-recorded intro all hell breaks loose. Incredibly fast riffing along with an awesomely groovy chorus shows us old school-Metallica at their absolute best.

Metallica Part 2

Da Capos - part 1
12. Wherever I may roam
"And the road becomes my bride" This version of the blaster from ’Metallica’ certainly reminds you of the golden age of the early 90-ies.
13. Nothing else matters
Once again Kirk’s spaghetti-guitar introduces the song, and then the notes climb towards the heavens like velvet. You can feel it, heart and soul. The song from the audience drowns out James at several occasions.
14. Master of puppets
The Mammoth-song – eight minutes and a half is after all quite some time- hits the audience almost as hard as in Oslo last December. James is in charge and the audience obeys his slightest wish.

Da Capos – part 2
15. One
After bomb explosions, fireworks and sweeping lights, the story of the living brain is told, a meaningless victim of a pointless war. Totally superior, achingly important – and definitely the most outstanding song of the night.
16. Enter sandman
Obligatory, sure. But a show without this massive hit would not be complete.

Da Capos – part 3
17. Leper messiah
The punch directed to all those hypocritical tv-evangelists out there hits home perfectly. An unexpected choice from ”Master of Puppets”, but brilliant.
18. Seek and destroy
OK, but "Motorbreath", "Jump in the fire", "Whiplash", "The four horsemen" or even "Metal militia" from ”Kill ’em all” would have been better choices.

I'm gonna kill you!" and then my dad yells I remember someone whos wrecked it twice and hasn't paid for it and then my sister got one those hurt looks on her face and shut up. It was funny

Actually, the term "heavy metal" was first used in William Borroughs' novel "The Naked Lunch".
