Strange Beautiful Ponderings on the theme of Love in Space

[[..though I refer to Joe in the third person, Joe, this post is also for YOU: my hero..]]

Zenfish wrote: “I know that some of us, like ovation1, fayne, clarky, and others love Joe for his rock'n'roll riffs.”

I will say this about that: Joe is a genius creator of songs ~ the song can never be limited to the “riffs” but includes the ~MeLoDy~ and in this regard Joe is a True Master and Creative Genuis, the way he blends the rocknroll riff with Melodies that break your heart, make your spirit soar to the skies and Other Planets, and get your blood pumping so hard your foot can’t stay off the gas, you can’t stay in your seat you gotta get up and dance and ‘fore you know it, that 90mph joy is bursting out all over the place and the smiles won’t stop.

The riff is nothing without the melody, and the melody is nothing without the rhythm, both of which are settings that showcase the guitar solo, but the solo would be nowhere without the song to reference ~ it’s all of a piece, so please no one misunderstand that I’m hooked on riffs alone.

++++++++++++++++

As for whether ITLIS is a step forward from SBM or not I think it is impossible to make any judgement APART from our tastes.

It never ceases to amaze me the various reactions fans and others have to Joe’s different songs. For example, I was ALL EXICTED this latest cd had two vocals, yet one of my Joe-friends at my work didn’t like those songs AT ALL ~ so go figure! (sheesh!)

Have you ever had the experience of disagreeing with someone about any song and think, man, are you listening to the same song I’m listening to? Well, yes, of course it’s the same SONG , but we’re all listening with different EARS.

This much should be obvious, like Duh, everyone brings a unique set of expectations, preferences, musical training, past experiences with music, ie, a unique set of ears to their experience of Joe’s music, and this includes the normalization of the rabid-JoeFan-curve…

I never wrote-up my reactions to SBM, though I had plenty to say ~ I do think ITLIS is a better cd than SBM ~ even though I could find nothing “wrong” with SBM, it seemed somehow … um, maybe “tame” for lack of a better word, and I thought so even at the time of the release of SBM, but I couldn’t put my finger on why, and I still can’t.

I find SBM tame by comparison to ITLIS ~ but then again, it could be I was experiencing a valley in my fan-feelings and thus brought my own apathy to SBM ~ I can’t know for sure, but I suspect something similar is happening with those who aren’t as enamored of ITLIS, in terms of what the listener is bringing to the experience.

Can the listener’s own feelings totally explain whether one cd is or is not better? Certainly not, but this is where each listener’s unique set of preferences comes into play also. I don’t think I’ll ever like SBM better than ITLIS, even though I find it hard to explain why. It comes down to a matter of personal taste, something you can’t control or quantify, so better to stop trying, just accept it.

I will say this about SBM: the cd reminded me strongly of the very first thing I noticed about Joe’s music when I first heard NOTE, and that is his Attention To Detail ~ every song is very carefully crafted and produced ~ this much is unmistakable and remarkable in itself. I can HEAR it, and I can appreciate it.

I’ve come to completely trust Joe’s musical instincts ~ even when a cd strikes me as “tame” I still admire and savor every finely tuned nuance I hear within each song.

Hence, I respectfully disagree with Zenfish in terms of which cd is better, or more of a move forward ~ I vote for ITLIS, but hey, that’s just “me” [*smile*]

…peace…

BRO AL - I believe Joe is an East Side boy.

...some big red bridge? That is funny lol . Yes, there is a big bridge, I believe it is technically orange (why, I don't know) but there are few others also. If for some reason you are into arch. there is a new bridge being built to replace the one that failed in the Loma Prieta earthquake. Are there quakes in Liffie-ville ? It only took 15 years for them to do this to replace this thing. And to think this bridge (Oakland Bay Bridge) is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. What are you studying at school anyway?

Oh boy.....here we go again.....Petrucci its not Dream Theater. Dream Theater have a bright by itself. Why do you need to compare a band with a long trajectory as "YES" with Dream Theater? If im truly honest, YES its very boring and a simple band, for me, and if you tried to compare Dream Theater´s skills with each one of the musicians on YES you know who whipes the floor with it.... I also prefer 1000000 times DT´s compositions than the YES stuff. RUSH its a more tastefull progresive band than YES, if you want to compare a band with the same long legacy..... You make it looks like this: the more years you have on the road touring makes you a better band, or a better musician. YES have some god songs but thats all...for me....The same happend to the Rolling Stones, for me theyr just a boring band of rock n´roll...not even close to The Beatles, ever!.... but, because the media, they move massive people. Same with Metallica, im no longer a fan of that band, i dont care if they sold thir souls to the media but theyr just write crap on every album after the Black one. Dream Theater is STILL a damn exellent band, and right now i rather go to any DT gig than a Oltallica one....Im not saying DT´s its a better band overall bands, but its a very strong band that have many specs i love in music: solid structure on their songs, inteligent killer riffs, mid sections that blows your mind, an enviroment, exelent musicians for doing the job...... Just my $0.05 cents. Its an underated band, because people who thinks its just a "show off" band when their goal its to play structurated inteligent non repetitive songs .....

Ga6o I know I'm not part of this discussion but I have to agree with you when you say DT have such talent in there. Rudess musical wizard to say the very least, Petrucci is a superb guitarist, Myung is a very talented guy same goes for Portney.

And Labrie is probably my favourite singer because of his range and just general sound of his voice...Maynard James Keenan is my other favourite singer (tool).

Clarky: Those proud daddy experiences are really magnificent. My sons (6½ and 8 years of age) also play football (soccer) in sommer seasons. It's nothing searious yet, but good fun. Last weekend my older one did the tackle of the tournament; the poor boy was crying because of the damage and my son was shouting to the referee: "What! It was not a foul, I just took the ball away! ...proud moments.

NOPPA - thanks for the link. My conversion table only does Euros, Yen, Aussie and Canadian dollar.

MASTER YODA - At the current rate of 1 pound = 1.84 US dollars that is a lot of cabbage to spend on the toads (parents) car in HOPES of getting it back. My sympathies

ALL - The fact that there is always a debate on who's better cracks me up. It is a no win situation. Remember people, opinions are like assholes...everybody has one. On the other hand it does make for some fiery discussion. Rage on People !!! Brittney vs Christina, DT vs. Yes, , Vanilla Ice vs. Ricky Martin, Ben Afflek vs. Marc Anthony.

The Forgotten (Part 2) and The Crush Of Love For G3!

Ovation1, yeah these rally guys are really impressive. I heard a suggestion yesterday that Mika Hakkinen might come back to F1 next year, maybe to Williams. He is an amazing driver, and really knew how to properly drive an F1 car before they started to drive themselves!

You may be pleased to know I gave the jem a good thrashing over the weekend! I felt sorry for it so I recorded a tune onto 4-track. the recording quality is piss-poor, and the lack of drums and bass is distressing, but it's enough for me to remember my half-decent ideas when I come to recording them on PC!

Delfino, hell yeah bro. Giant Fruit Suits is still a killer idea! A petition for a 10th anniversary of G3 is also a good idea, but I dunno how those chain-e-mail-petition things work. I mean, I don't know how you actually monitor the real number of signatures.

Also, for your info, I posted the MPHGT Arpeggios the other day for IceZer. I'll post them again for you tho!

Alexandre, happy 400 amigo!
DCK, I personally think 2 base cabs next to each other look cool, and I prefer the sound of base cabs anyway
OCPS470, cool, thanks for the info on peter's work! Damn, it sounds like he's an amazing craftsman....being that good with wood is worthy of the respect of the gods!
marimariSRV, thanks for your e-mails! and for the photos. hey, cool picture with mr Johnson.....you just had to rub it in didn't you?! hehe.
Austin, cool, thanks. keep me updated on the EJ Strat! I wouldn't be surprised if they do make it available globally - they have the world domination thing pretty much nailed, and even if they keep it local, I could always import one!
civgeek, haha, yeah I have also noticed that by which you were distraught - some people have no sense of pitch. What is equally disturbing, is the number of drummers i've heard who can't keep time! Good luck finding someone who has half an idea how to sing!
Joe, you should regress to the look of the Engines Of Creation and Strange Beautiful Music tours! The Oakleys and no hat on Live In SanFran was most cool, and those ace trousers....sorry....pants you wore for SBM look great on stage. You know, the black ones with the broad stripes that look a kind of sunset-colour, tho that could have been the lights!
Ceremony and Secret Prayer for G3 Ljubljana!
testas, I have no idea where you can get a scratch-film from like on Joe's chromers. You know when you buy a new CD or something, sometimes it has a clear label of some kind on it, and it's really easy to peel off? I strongly suspect that it's the same stuff, and cuz it's easy to peel leaving almost no visible trace, then no, it wouldn't damage the guitar.
Danny K, fair enough dude. did you try the Axis with a Piezo pickup in it? Also, which axis? the standard one or the 'Axis Sport'?

962 - I here you about the drummers. My protection against that is (whether good or bad) to listen to the bass player. The other advantage I have is that, in the many times there has been an absence of a singer, I have had the singing duties and therefore have been able to regulate the time a bit. More successfully with some than others but every little bit helps. At least the singers we have had in realize that they are not cutting the mustard.

TO ALL - The one other gripe I have about doing AAGGHH-ditions is people that come in, are not prepared, and WASTE MY FUCKIN' TIME. There is nothing I hate more than people that waste my time. I only get to rehearse one day a week for 4-5 hrs and I don't want to spend the whole time calling out changes to songs that are not that hard (Kryptonite, Never Again). These songs are childs play. It's not like I've asked the bass player have YYZ in the bag.

Thanks all ,I feel much better now.

DELPHINO - It was the hair. Funny ass picture!!! I think we have a match.

cuthbert1776 - "Another way in which the two are alike is that people think that those of others stink, while their own does not."

Very good point and one that I missed.
