Delfino - Yes and no; it depends what kind of teaching you want to get into. To teach privately you really don't need any qualifications - you just need to be able to play. Although you can charge more money if you do have relevant qualifications. It helps to have a bit of a reputation as a player before getting into it, but if you don't then you may well be able to do that through the teaching. But it's hard to make a substantial amount of money (ie. a living) out of private teaching because it takes time to build up your clientelle.

For school/peripatetic teaching (which is what I do, as well as four or five private students) they really prefer you to be qualified, since it's a much more official position - to some extent you're more of an employee than self-employed. I got my teaching gig on the premise that I will graduate at the end of this year. Mind you, it did help that I used to go to the school and the head of music remembers me.

One thing I will say, however, is that regardless of how amazing you are at playing the guitar you may well make a lousy teacher. You have to be able to communicate the information in a clear, understandable, jargon-free, and fun way. You have to be able to relate to your students. Some people just can't do that. There are courses you can take and various methods you can employ, but that won't necessarily help in any way - you're either a good teacher or you aren't, IMHO.

By the way, I haven't forgotten about my little country styles demo I said I'd make for you - I've just had a lot on my plate recently; I will get round to it, I promise!!!! :-)

cuthbert - i'm now on mandrake linux which has one advantage and one disadvantage...

Good point - I've got internet working, and it was all pain free and easy.

Bad point - I've now got to wade through all the settings changing things to work in a nicer way (Slackware is nicely setup, it just doesn't do anything unless someone who really knows what they're doing plays with it.

962 - how deeply predictable! enjoy your guitar though :)

Point taken.Just a thought but I almost bought a 400 watt PA system to run my POD Pro through instead of an actual guitar amp.Maybe that's what you need?...The Idea of separating speakers so they are far apart for a good stereo sound really had me thinking about it seriously. When you think about it,when you play live you get miked up anyway...Good luck in your search nontheless:)

This may be a silly request but I was wondering if you would consider putting a "Member Since (00/00/00)"...along with the rest of the member information on their post?.I am sure some people would be curious to see how long others have been here.Is that possible?

Cuthbert: I wasn't hacking on you man.

Jazzy: Great idea!! Highschool dropouts shouldn't get to vote. We should get rid of all the slackjawed knuckle draggers....but that would seriously shrink the democrat's base, as well as some gun toting republican hillbillies. The fact about excons, however, is that most of them (unfortunately) are not changed people. Many of them are and will be repeat criminals. I was just saying that excons loosing their voting rights doesn't bother me, whereas actual descrimination against normal law abiding voters does. It just seems that individuals should have thought about the concequences of their actions before carrying them out. In addition criminals in jail should not be able to vote. It is not a God given right, it is a luxury like driving a car, and I'll be damned if some shmuck in prison decided what laws will govern me. one last thing, you seems to hack on religious people a ton. While fundamentalist christians scare me almost as much as Fundamentalist Islam, and Mormons (just kidding haah) I think this country could use more morals and focus. I'm a practicing Catholic, and that gives my life a lot of focus, more focus than the typical American college kid that sees no farther in life than getting high, tosted and laid. I think are country is being filled more and more with a bunch of brain dead wastes, that have no passion for anything.

Sorry to everyone else, but I've been exploding holding all this in.....no more politics now from me

jazzzzzzzy - Even if something happened in Florida, the entire election wasn't fixed (as someone originally said, which started this whole thing). Florida is one state. It's wrong to blame Bush and the Florida stuff for Gore's loss, especially when he didn't even win his home state.

That is my point, even if it's not what you're saying...

"There is only one color of so called "conservative values" in America - White. Conservative Christian Family values."

That's very close-minded.

"As for Bowling for Columbine, I dont find anything wrong with it."

You find nothing wrong with deceptively editing speeches together and rearranging words to change meaning?

"And if a person is able bodied and supports Bush's war policy (the one with a retarted exit strategy), why the hell not join the armed forces? Hypocrisy in its finest moment."

You brought this up a few months ago. It's not hypocricy. It is possible to support what people do without going out and doing it yourself. There is no draft in this country. People who join the armed forces know ahead of time what they're getting into.

bahduh - Welcome back. I still haven't had a chance to listen to that Symphony X CD, but I should be able to get to it this weekend (tomorrow?)...
Clarky - "thanx for the happy b-day bro.. better late than never... lol.."

You're welcome. I don't know how I forgot to say "Happy Birthday" on your actual birthday...I read some of the other posts and meant to say the same thing, but I guess I didn't. Oh well...maybe you can just consider it an early "Happy Birthday" for 2005? ;-)

Jared Presley - " Moore's movies are biased, note, there are no 'lies' in them but they are just partisan."

They're more than "just partisan". He intentionally distorts facts to mislead people.

" How about Fox News?"

I don't really watch news on television. CNN and MSNBC are the same way, though.

cuthbert1776 - "Not to fan the flames of conspiracy here (who, me ;-))"

::gasp:: YOU? ;-)

Okay, you have a point... As I mentioned above, though, someone else (I don't remember who it was, but it was not you, me, or jazzzzzzzy) basically said Bush fixed the entire election...so my comments were more in response to that.

"An interesting note: did you know it is possible to win the presidency by winning only 12 states?"

Yeah, I knew that...

Now that I think about it, you could run for president and get twelve of your friends (one in each of the big states) to vote for you. If no one else voted in those 12 states, the other guy could have millions of votes in the other 38 states and you'd still win.

That's nice and fair, isn't it? ;-)

Mr Nick - http://www.xe.com/ucc/
nils - When you say "inner sleve", do you mean a booklet or a paper inside the DVD case? LISF has neither.
brguitarist - Hi...welcome to the site.
Metal Meister - Welcome to you as well.
mikesb - "Austin think Joe is planning to stay "off" the road for a longer than usual period when he finishes this tour?"

I really don't know. Joe confuses me... ;-) He obviously loves touring...why else would he play seven shows in a row from after Christmas through New Year's?

I hope he goes to Asia / Australia soon, now that those rumors have come up again. As long as he goes there, he can take two years off and I won't mind.

agster - Most (all?) of the rest of the show from Dreaming #11 is included on Time Machine's second disc.

Satch~ I have been a huge fan for several years. I missed you and the band last month when you came to Austin, TX with Thin Lizzy/Deep Purple. I'm already waiting for your next apperence here at the end of the month at the University of Texas Performing Arts Center. My brother lives in San Fran and saw the show. He said it was great, but of coarse considering the line-up, you only played about forty-five minutes. Anyway, this will be the first time that I see you in concert and I cannot stop talking about it. All of my favorite songs are somewhat new, but all the older tunes I know are just as great. The collection of tunes that you and the band have put together are extordinary, but the one tune that always gives me chills is "TIME". I first heard the tune when I was picking up my brother from the airport at DFW. He threw it on, and it caught my attention quick, and I said to him, "That has to be Satch". Since then, the song has reminded me of my brother and I. We are huge music people and enjoy great music from the heart. I put the song on periodically to remind me of my bro because he is always with me mentally, but hundreds of miles away. Sometimes songs make you feel like everything will be alright, and things will always turn around. They let you know that a smile on your face is always better then a nasty scowl. This song has meant more to me in music then hearing my first compact disc when I was just a naive little punk kid. Thanks for great music! I look forward to hearing you on the 30th, and I hope you, campitelli, stu, and everyone else have great shows, and stay safe along the way.

Thanks, AGS

Hey all. Been doing a lot of work this week, hence the no-posts. I skipped a few pages from the other day and also a few from the weekend.

We had our federal election on Saturday, and the same party got back in with a healthier majority. I'll won't push my opinions on the result on anyone, but may I say that I wasn't surprised at the result at all.

So I have heard enough political commentary for a while thank you!

Bahduh: you around? This second test is looking to be a bit of a turnaround from the last one!

funk311: cool story. Thanks for sharing that with us. It is an awesome song I know!!!

To all: I filled in on drums for some friends on Sunday night. I had to learn 6 songs I had never heard until 4 days beforehand. Turned out pretty good. "I liked the intro you did for that song, the one that was like ... " (The one I changed to make it sound tougher.) Pretty happy with that. Hopefully the guy I stood in for recovers from his "injury" as he was walking rather awkwardly.

OCPS: Thats fantastic that you are a "strong practicing catholic"! So are millions of other people! If you think you are by any chance a more gifted & much smarter than the average "college kid" just because of your strong Catholic faith, I would have to say it is safe to abandon your faith because arrogance in Christianity is scorned. According to my ideals, I believe you are a Catholic only for reputation and prestige. I dont see it as anything more than a tag saying "Hey! Look! I am Catholic! God loves me! God doesnt love you!" The very fact that you pass judgement on people who like to get "high, toasted and laid" (which for some odd reason could be 80% of the world???) lets me assume that your faith has been scarred by what society expects you to worship, not what you truly believe using your own moral rationality.

I do not see any crime in having harmless fun whether it is getting "high, toasted AND laid." In fact, I have learnt (and still learning) more about myself by exploring new grounds. If you (in your self righteous world) think that you are a better person than I am only because you dont seem to be indulging in some of the things I do, then good. Good for you! You dont have to go around preaching unless flaunting is a hobby of yours.

I have been to college. I graduated with honors in Econ and Math. I have seen 600 kids graduate (and several of them graduated with honors). I dont remember myself as the only one partying (and trying to hook up with chicks). And You have the audacity to prove yourself "better" than them all when you havent even met them???

Now, I dont know who you are. I would say this the exact same thing to anyone who comes off to me as arrogant and self righteous by waving their faith. If you find strength in Catholicism, thats fantastic! There are a million ways to find strength, btw.

In case you didnt know, I was born and raised Catholic too. I still am Catholic and always will be. I do find strength in Faith and Prayer. But I do not let institution dictate my life. I search for it myself.

Just got in from the show. Man o' man o' man was it killer!!! Every time I see Joe I think it's the best show yet, and folks, this was the best show yet! lol! They played PSYCHO MONKEY!! Also, wait till you hear AWM,AWY. It's a few minutes longer and it's the best version I've ever heard! Awesome, awesome show. Joe looked HOT in his jeans, black tee, red glasses with guitar to match, and NO hat!! I LOVE seeing Joe's bald head! lol! He was ON FIRE and the whole band was fantastic. I love the extra sound Galen adds to the band.

JOE, you were awesome! Wish we had more time. Hope you weren't to late for your meeting. Always remember - You've Got A Friend In Pennsylvania :) lol!

Wouldnt a G3 with Hendrix, Rhoades and Stevie Ray be great? Man, whoo!

jblaze - I've definately seen some weird shit on tour.. well not so much 'seen' as been in the middle of... lol...
but a rat trap kick pedal is a new one on me.. lmao..

Yoda - if you're after a cheaper option look in LOOT.. that's where I got my 8008.. got it cheap too..

so has your girlie singer left the band??
when / why did that happen?

Jazzy - interesting stuff the moon landing thing.... there's plenty of evidence pointing at it being staged...

even if the moon landing did take place, many of the photographs have been seriously doctored or shot in a studio

Suzie - I love Malmsteen... all that throwing guitars around... don't bother me at all.. Vai does all that to... don't forget, when you go to a gig you go to see the guy as well as hear him.. he's just putting on a show in the good old R'n'R tradition
look at Hendrix... widely regarded as the Great Grand Father of rock guitar... he was partial to breaking and burning guitars too....
never forget....
being a rock / metal musician is as much about the attitude as the music itself.....
the funny thing is that Malm tries to sell himself as being a classical-head... and then creates something called "Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar"... lmao...

a conterto is a work for a solo instrument accompanied by an orchestra to show the technical and emotional prowess of the soloist.. in Baroque period Italian form, it contains 3 movements [a fast one, a slow one and another fast one].. in the 19th century [as with symphonies] one or two additional movements were added]..

a suite is a set of 5 dances with a prelude at the beginning [6 works in all].. the form, time signature and tempo of each of the dances are very different to a concerto.. when you write a suite the first work is most often a prelude, the next four work can be anything you like [and there are a ton of different dances to choose from... most common are: minuet, sarabande, allemande, gigue, bouret], the final part is most often the Gigue

so... saying Concerto Suite is like saying 'horse truck'... yes a horse and a truck are both methods of transport... but together it just makes no sense...

Malmsteen... great player... not as bright as he thinks he is...
and I love 'im..... lmao...

Zinc Master, oh you should see Texas Chainsaw.......it's definitely a comedy! haha. I've only seen the original, but it cracked me up, it was so lame. The second half of the film consisted simply of a woman running around screaming wildly!

Suzie, I will say, I do like the sound of some of Yngwies music, especially the slow bits! I just can't hack seeing someone smash a guitar. It's a really childish, pathetic thing to do and Joe and Steve are both quite sophisticated. I would have been embarrassed, but yeah, they all still showed each other a lot of respect!

In the time it's taken you to read that, you could have been ordering a copy of G3 96 with EJ! Get to it! hehe. Seriously tho, i'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Delfino, no absolutely not. I have a good friend who is a bass/guitar teacher and he is beyond grade 8 with a decent music career behind him, but he doesn't have a single grade cirtificate. All you need is to be able to inspire someone and teach them to be able to do what they want to do!
Jared, I think it was very smart to have YJM on the G3 tour, cause he's probably a bigger name than Satch and Vai. It was a great catalyst for marketing and the release of the CD and especially the DVD got some really good exposure at the right time.

On that basis, I would suggest to Joe that for even more exposure and recognition by the general public, get somebody like Slash on board! I woulnd't mind seeing that actually, Slash is allright!

michelle, good to hear you enjoyed the show! Did joe play a lot of the new stuff? What did you think of it live?
jelly man, haha, yeah very predictable, but the guitar is great, so it's all good. One thing that i'm curious about though.....who the f*ck are SID Guitar Strings? They're made in the sunny USA aparrently. It's an ass, cause I got 4 packs of the bastards, and no use for them, cause I use D'addarios! Oh well, can't have it all!

roflmfao

optical - I don't know about the amps and cabs you've listed... I mean I've heard of them, read reviews etc... but never messed with them so I can't really form an opinion...

a pal of mine has the 5150.. I've not heard it yet.. but he's raving about it.. says he loves it...

I don't use the channels switching stuff any more [I used to though].. because now I use rack stuff... so in songs I switch patches to call up different settings... that's what works for me...

so my amp is clean and loud and stereo.... it gets turned up and left alone... lmao..

ocps, cuthbert, jazzy - how about this.... the only guys that are allowed to vote are all those people that the Prez likes and thinks are clever enough to hold such a responcibility.. lmao..
962 - when the women were running around screeming wildly were they wearing anything or nekid??

Clarky - That's one snappy title! LOL. Zoe was fired, but she kind of knew it ws going to happen - if we didn't fire her she probably would have left eventually, so we decided to make it sooner rather than later so as not to waste any time. Basically, she wasn't really into our stuff anymore. She was saying things like "we should write some short songs with less solos so that we're more commercially viable and we can radio play", and even though she had a point we're just not that kind of band. We just write, and if it ends up long and full of solos then that's the way it is. Plus, everyone I've spoken to has said that she doesn't suit our music too well - her voice isn't powerful enough, etc. etc. We're still friends and she understood, but it's still a bit of a pain in the arse. Nevermind...

By the way, I went to the Carvin website and found the TS100 power amp which sounds really good. Nevada Music sell it for £449, which is affordable, and it's 100% chrome on the front!!!! BLING!!!!! lmao. That would look so cool...
