INNER PEACE---

I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me and we all could use more calm in our lives.

By following the simple advice I heard on a Dr. Phil show, I have finally found inner peace.

Dr. Phil proclaimed "The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you've started."

I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't finished, so, before leaving this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot,

a bottle of White Zinfandel,

a bottle of Tanqueray,

a bottle of Bailey's,

a bottle of Kahlua,

a package of Oreos,

the remainder of both Prozac and Valium prescriptions,

some chocolate covered pretzels,

the rest of the cheesecake,

some saltines and a box of chocolates.

You have no idea how freaking good I feel.

Please pass this on to those you feel are in need of inner peace.

1 cent on ebay - what a rip off.

Those bidding wars are way too crazy.

Inner peace for 1 cent - who do they think we are, Bill Gates?

"I am guessing it was not Peart's philosophy that attracted you to RUSH ;-) "

As a matter of fact it was Neil's intellectual approach to writing lyrics and the bands proficiency with their instruments that drew me to RUSH! Who could ever not like passages such as "All this machinery making modern music can still be open hearted not so coldly charted it's really just a question of your honesty” Or "You can choose from phantom fears or kindness that can kill, I will choose a path that’s clear I will choose free will” Cutting my metaphysical teeth on this at such a tender age ingrained a spirit of positive thinking and nurtured a lifestyle of self actualization.

Another passage from Neil is "There is unrest in the forest there is trouble with the trees for the maples want more sunlight but oaks ignore there pleas."

Or

"A simple kind of mirror to reflect upon our own, all the busy little creatures chasing out their destinies. Living in their pools they soon forget about the seas."

Or my personal favorite.

"Some will sell their dreams for small desires, lose the race to rats, get caught in ticking traps and start to dream of somewhere to relax their restless flight. Somewhere out of a memory, a lighted street on a quiet night."

When my wife and I lost a child, it was Neil's

And if the music stops
there's only the sound of the rain
All the hope and glory
All the sacrifice in vain
If love remains
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

BRAVADO, 1991

Through countless growing pains and personal triumphs RUSH has been there for thirty years.

Namm Man, and one of my favorites:

A boy alone, so far from home Endless rooftops from my window I felt the gloom of empty rooms On rainy afternoons Sometimes in confusion I felt so lost and disillusioned Innocence gave me confidence To go up against reality

[Chorus:] All the same we take our chances Laughed at by time Tricked by circumstances Plus ca change Plus c'est la meme chose The more that things change The more they stay the same

Now I've gained some understanding Of the only world that we see Things that I once dreamed of Have become reality These walls that still surround me Still contain the same old me Just one more who's searching for A world that ought to be

[Chorus]

I'm sure this is a FAQ but I've searched everywhere! I want to buy a hat like Joe's. I know they are made by a ladies' prayer circle in Alabama but I can't find them online! Any ideas?

This is long overdue but a dear friend of mine and I got to meet Joe after a show in St Louis (mid-October).

The eternal question: what to say to someone famous?

I debated between various tangents

(a) guitar geek tangent: favorite mode?
(b) political tangent: who should we vote for?
(c) obsequious tangent: dude, you're great!
(d) confrontational tangent: why not use a real horn section, a good soul singer, etc for the occasional song?
(e) goofy tangent: if i shave my head, will i play better?

In the end, I chose to say: thanks. Thanks for all the music and for pushing the boundaries of guitar and musical expression.... In various times of my life, Joe's music has been the soundtrack; the "house band" of my soul.

Mike

ps. My friend is new to Joe and really digs him! She esp. loves "If I Could Fly" from the latest CD. It is cool to catch the enthusiasm from someone else.....

" the always-thought-provoking lyrics put them in a class by themselves. "

It was refreshing to hear a band with substance. I always enjoyed YES for the same reason.

"THE MORE THINGS CHANGE THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME"

How true, How true. I guess the only true constant in life is in the fact that it will change.

Do you remember this one?

The countless ways
You pass the days
Waiting for someone to call and turn your world around
Looking for the answer to the questions you have found
Looking for an open door

And this one,

You can stake your claim
Good work is the key to good fortune
Winners take that praise
Loosers seldom take the blame

Finally

SWEET MEMMORIES I NEVER THOUGHT IT COULD BE LIKE THIS.............. Reminding me oh just how close I came to missing, I know that my goal is more than a thought, you'll be there when you teach what i've been taught. You know we told you before, but you did'nt hear us then so you still QUESTION WHY no you did'nt listen again.

slansh - lmao... "ah yes but can he do it on an electric???"
lol.. yup I've heard that shite before too....
does anyone look at Schumaker and say "ah.. but could he win that race in a bus??"

it's not purist.. it's just bullshit...
acoustics and electrics are both guitars, but the similarity ends there...
they make a different sound... their roll in music is different..
the techniques and appraoches to performance are different..

so... the next time a purist sees a shredders and issues his default "ah but can he do it on acoustic??" the reply has to be..

"ah.. but can you do that at all???"

I'd then expect a little shuffling of feet, followed by the occasional.. "err.. well... erm... "

then for the coup de grace.. tell him it's his round...

mikesb - and the 3rd kind of tendon problem is due to sheer exhaustion.... something like a real long workout, a long recording / rehearsal session etc...

it's not so bad at the time but a day or so later it kicks in an can leave you with an ache that'll last a week or more...

I don't often get pains... but when I do get pain, this is normally the type of pain I get...

dck - what does that guitar rig sound like on stage???..
delfino - no, I don't have problems alternate picking the low E [the 6th string]...

even if I don't want a muted tone, I gently mute it anyhow [just the tiniest amount] as it adds a lot of definition.
I use only the very tip of the pick too..
and not too much attack.. if you dig in too deeply the definition is lost, the string rings very hard to all the higher frequencies become more pronounced... add that t the fact that you are using a ton of dirt, then you'll find that those higher frencies get compressed and spill all over the tone..
-- stratchy --

the light muting squeezes out the strings ability to vibrate which means that the upper frequencies and harmonics get squeezed out too..warms the tone up greatly.. so only the attack of the pick is heard...

the times it sounds great, stop and make a mental note of the position and pressure applied by your right hand over the bridge... it's quite subtle.. not as deep as a full-on mute...

delfino - I forgot to add.... the scratchy tone can also be added when speed picking if you don't gently mute [sort of 1/2 mute] because the heal of your hand rubs on the strings... the 1/2 mute fixes your skin to the strings so your hand moves and the skin don't......

steven wilde - to get a midi setup working you don't have to be an expert at midi proto [alhough that'd help.. lol].. however, there are some basic principles you'll need to get your head around.... channels, controllers, midi time code [MTC] settings, MMC settings and frame rates [such as 30dfs] - well you don't need to understand them as much as know where to set the value in your sequencer and your portastudio.. both machines have to be set to the same value or else they can't synchronise..

pro-tools is supposed to be awesome... my bassist has it.. he loves it... I don't have it as my music pc is not powerful enough... so my pc just handles the sequencing....

one day I'll get a better pc so that I can record maybe the orchestral parts into it and leave the AW16G just for the bass, drums and guitars....
