I bought a Whammy bar finally for my JS100. It must take a lot of practice to get used to though. Any advice as to how to use it properly would be much apreciated.

Jersey Jet theirs not Really A Real Proper Way to use a Whammy bar unless your breaking it that would be an Exception But it depends what your playing and what you Want to Play the Best Tip Is Don't Make FAST moments with it and not any really Deep Dive bomb(Bar all the way down) unless you want to. Just Use Smooth Slow controlled Movements (And its normally on a Single Fret when used) but you can Do anything you want with one

Powerslave214.

In answer to your compound-radiusquestion:

First, I will assume you know absolutely nothing about "radius".

(even if you do, at least someone out there probably does not).

I believe (?) the radius is smallest at the nut (top of fretboard) and increases at some rate to the largest radius at the bottem of the fretboard (by the body).

Say I took 2 trees; one tree is 12" radius (24" diameter), the other tree is 16" radius (32" diameter).

Then I sliced off a chunk from both trees, top to bottem. naturally the piece with a 16" radius would appear flatter than the 12" radiused board.

The strings are closest together at the nut, so it would be fairly easy to finger all the strings if the fretboard has an extreme (rounder) radius, like 12".

But, the strings are farther apart by the body, so it is easier to finger all the stings if the fretboard radius is flatter, like a 16" radius.

Hope this helps you or anyone else.

Alexandre I'm good thanks bro', I hope you are as well. No new bike, the VFR is away in the garage for 'winter', although more because it needs some money spent on it and it's not a priority this time of year (did I really just say that?) lol ;-) I'm ashamed to say no new songs yet, I've not played 'seriously' since we moved but that is about to change. I thought about you last night as I watched a TV programme on food across Portugal.................. they also mentioned a type of blues music called............ fado ?? or something like that. It seemed that the main dishes (apart from fish) are mostly made from pork. We might becoming over to Portugal for a holiday this year, any advice on where to go ? We'd be bringing the little one so it would be family orientated. How about you ? Are you still busy at work ? Still writing lots ? I must check your site out soon. Take care man.

Cube Ahhhh........ good luck dude, you'll rip it up !!!

Stevee T, thanks for checkin it out man, I appreciate the feedback!

bahduh, I still haven't heard Steven yet! That's partly why I'm helping him with setting up soundclick, so I can download some MP3's!

Also, I didn't know Shcumacher had given 10 million! Good for him....I'm not surprised it's more than Bill gates gave!

civgeek, wow must be an old RG?! You lucky git! hehe. regards pickups, I'm almost certain on putting an Air Zone in the bridge. I've been reading, re-reading, comparing and reading some more, Dimarzio's spec sheets for a bunch of their pickups, and also talked to chris peters about it and the Air Zone sounds like my thing! I tried a couple of Paul Gilbert models before now which I think are loaded with a Tone Zone set.....it was good, but not quite what I need in the SA. An Air Zone, a Cruiser in the neck and another Cruiser or an HS2 will probaby make the best use of the mahogany body.....nice and rich and warm!
Austin, my Electromagnets CD arrived from Florida! You're absolutely right, it's awesome, I love it! I personally wouldn't say it's my favourite - I still can't find something that beats Venus Isle - but it's great to hear EJ being so ballsy. He was so young!
Suzie, hahaha, yeah "mm, I'm not sure about the colour on the walls in the bathroom"....well then f*ck*ng paint it, moron! hahaha, people can be so anal about things! Good luck and best wishes to you both, see you soon!
alexandre, cool, thanks amigo! Let me know what you think!
PFields, JS differences. OK, the JS2000 is an anomaly. It's built like any other JS but with a fixed bridge. It's bridge does not move....at all. It's a completely new design of bridge which Ibanez tried out with Joe's help - a fixed bridge with fine tuners, that's basically the principal. It still has the same pickups as a JS1000 so it sounds pretty much the same, but you don't get to do any of the whammy stuff and cool noises and all the Joe-isms, so it seems a bit pointless to me.

The JS1000 has the same pickups it's had for years - DiMarzio, PAF Pro in the neck and Fred in the bridge - and new ones get the new design of Ibanez Floyd Rose-licensed bridge, the Edge Pro, which allows all the whammy abuse it can take. Unfortunately, this isn't as much as it used to be, cause the new bridges have a tendancy to shatter. That said, they've been making them over a year now, so maybe they've ironed out the problems?

The JS1200 is a slight revision of the JS1000. Same bridge, same body, neck, fretboard, everything. The only physical difference is it's neck pickup - it gets the new PAF Joe, which aparrently suits the Fred slightly better. Interesting cause the PAF Pro suits the Fred so well, you wouldn't think it'd need changing. The only other difference is aesthetic - the JS1200 is red with chrome hardware, the JS1000 is burned blue with metallic black hardware, kind of like very shiny gunmetal!

That's really all there is to it. Oh, the JS1000 is invariably a lot cheaper than the 1200....like, 2-4 hundred dollars cheaper, so if I were buying a JS I really could not find an actual reason for buying a 1200, considering 65 bucks will get you a PAF Joe pickup if you really want that tone!

vfr - Picture at an Exhibition by ELP is their own reworking or the original by Mussorgski - which is largely the same as the orchestral original, but with drums, bass and keys...

cuth - "I would strongly reccommend guitar strings ;-)"
roflmfao......
Cuth / Kev88 - here are a few general rules of thumb about strings...

1 - the higher the guage, the greater the sustain and the thicker the tone - also, from a tuning point of view, they are generally a little more stable
2 - the lower the guage, the less resistance is offered by the string in the form of tension.. so they feel easier to play... especially with techniques like bending and legato..

so... to answer your strings question.. it's a trade off between what you feel most comfortable playing against the tone / sustain you need.... and this is considered against what your jog is as a guitarist... riffer [medium to heavy guages]? shredder [lighter guages]? both [lighter / hybrid guages]? jazzer [medium to heavy]? metal moshpit maniac medium to heavy - to regain some tension due to the drop tuning]? bluesman medium to heavy]? classic rocker [light to medium]?.. and so on... note that guys with a cleaner tone will generally for for a heavier guage.. [apart from the drop-tune nutters]...
generally, 9's or lower are considered 'light', 10's / 11's 'medium' and 12's and above 'heavy'

in fact, these days, lead guitarists use so much more overdrive / distortion / compression that sustain is less of an issue than it used to be....

in general, 009 guage are most common and are fitted as standard by pretty much all guitar manufacterers...

you my want to try a set of 10 guage to see if you get on well with them... personally I find the plain strings [1st, 2nd, and 3rd strings] a little too stiff for my playing style...

if you want to try a set of 11 guage of above you'll need your truss-rod adjusting to compensate for the extra tension [if you don't know what you're doing - get someone that does to sort it for you]
also, if you use a floating bridge [like a Floyd etc] then going up to a higher string guage will pull it foward... so you'll need to tighten the spring a little at the rear to pull the bridge back down.... if you've not done this before and you'll need to.. shout and I'll explain what you'll need to do... it's not rocket science..

me - I use Ernie Ball "Skinny Tops, Heavy Bottoms" this is a hybrid set... the plain strings follow the guages from a set of 9's, the wrapped strings follow the guages from a set of 10's
makes for a nice slinky feel for the solos and a slightly tighter and thicker tone for the riffing.... [best of both worlds - and you don't need to touch the truss rod]

I think Satch uses a standard set of 9's
