Britain Pledges Tighter Immigration Policy
I know this has been a topic before.
LONDON - The government Monday proposed tighter immigration controls and said only skilled workers who speak English would be allowed to settle in Britain permanently.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke said the government also would fingerprint all foreigners applying for visas to stop them from remaining in Britain once their permits expire.
The measures, which would not affect citizens of the European Union (news - web sites), are part of a Europe-wide drive to tackle illegal immigration — an issue particularly sensitive for Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites)'s government as it gears up for national elections expected in May.
"This country needs migration. Tourists, students and migrant workers make a vital contribution to the U.K. economy. But we need to ensure that we let in migrants with the skills and talents to benefit Britain, while stopping those trying to abuse our hospitality and place a burden on our society," Clarke said.
The European Union justice and interior ministers hope to agree on common immigration and asylum rules by 2010. The EU policy is aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration and boosting the number of skilled immigrants.
The EU may end up creating common legal migration standards, including rules for rejecting asylum seekers, and introducing a U.S.-style green card system aimed at attracting sought after workers.
Immigration and asylum is politically sensitive in Britain. Asylum applications rose to record levels in 2002, and Blair has fought hard to get control of the issue.
The government has introduced tighter border controls, worked with France to close a refugee camp used by asylum seekers as a staging post to enter Britain illegally and has speeded up the pace of processing and returning failed asylum seekers.
But the Conservatives claim that problems continue unchecked and last month pledged to cap the number of immigrants. The party also promised to pull Britain out of the 1951 U.N. Refugee Convention, which obliges countries to take in asylum seekers based on need, regardless of numbers.
The government's five-year plan is seen as a bid to outmaneuver the Conservatives and appear tough on the issue.
Happy 500 to me!!!! *Begins to Clog*

Steven- Glad to hear you'd cheered up a bit from earlier on; sorry to hear you're down about things, let us know how things are going. My Head Teacher peed me off today as she told me one thing, then something else to someone else... why can't people just be straight with you, it would save so much crap! Anyway, take care my friend!
Jazzzzzzzy- read you were listening to Kashmir earlier- that's one of my absolute favourite Led Zep tracks!! Hope you're keeping well.
Cheese101- Hi! Still pleased with all your Joe tickets? I've NEVER EVER seen him live, next time he is playing in London I have GOT to get a ticket!
Civgeek/Matt- Happy 500th to you!

U.S. Guards Threw Mudwrestling Party Prison Camp?
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. military police threw a mudwrestling party at a prison camp in Iraq (news - web sites) and a woman who took part has been found guilty of indecent exposure and demoted, the U.S. military said Monday.
At least three female guards stripped to their underwear and wrestled each other in a paddling pool full of mud in the grounds of Camp Bucca, the biggest U.S. camp for detainees in Iraq, Lt. Col. Barry Johnson said.
Several guards who watched the wrestling have been reprimanded for failing to intervene.
The party took place on Oct. 30 last year, when one U.S. military police battalion, the 160th, was about to hand over responsibility to another, the 105th.
Officers from both battalions were involved and photographs were taken. A prison guard found the photos sometime later and handed them over to the camp's commanders.
"It does not appear that alcohol was involved and there is no evidence to support suggestions of any type of sexual misconduct," Johnson told Reuters.
"Detainees were nowhere in the vicinity and they had no possible way of seeing what occurred."
He said the incident was being investigated further and did not rule out further punishment. He declined to name the demoted soldier.
