i've taken the step forward to start teaching people guitar

I have my first 'student'..13 year old kid, no guitar playing experience and no guitar (i have a spare guitar he can use). He arrives on friday, so i've got some time to prepare.

I need some advice on how to fill 45 minutes with a complete beginner.

Obviously, its no point in going into sweep picking, tapping, jazz chords and all that stuff...but to start with the basics.

so far, written down - intro to guitar. What it is and why it is so good. Its versatile, play rythmn and lead, play chords and single notes, different sounds with effect pedals and you can do cool wooweewoo noises with the whammy bar. I dont want to put him off playing but to encourage him.

The first thing i learnt was 'friends'..not the satch song but the tv theme tune from the show, or at least the intro/chorus thingy...and 3 chords, D, E and A (i think) which are used in that little bit of the song.

Then i got proper guitar lessons, where we started the caged system...and so i'm planning on doing that with as one of the first things. I dont want to leap into that though with someone who hasn't got a guitar. Nor do i want to leap into theory, might put him off music altogether. So, maybe a mixture of 2? a song he knows or something...

what do you people suggest?

Good afternoon everybody! STEVEN WILDE: tks for the Vibes! yesterday I so worried about Michelle's stepdad... yes, let's pray for him, diabets is so dangerous when we don't know how to deal with it. Today i'm very busy studyng for a test that I will have on wednesday for a new and better job, I need so much to get that vacancy! I'm studyng maths, English, and International Credits (Letters of credits for international trade). My son was good at his first interview and he has to wait for the second (if he gets). That's funny! both of us (mom and son) applying for a job at same time(different jobs of course) !!!! God bless !!! :) :) :) Your vibes and prayer are always wellcome ! ................................................................................................... MICHELLE: get those classes, it is really important do learn about this disease. So your son plays drumms ? cool!! ...................................................................................................MR NICK: Hi mr Nick ! when my son started (five years ago) he didn' t have a guittar, and his teacher let him use a spare guittar too, and at beginning what encourages him the most was learning to play a song that he liked and was too easy "Sweet child oh mine" , but now he wants only to try hard Satriani, Vai and DreamTheater, he also practice a lot of Iron Maiden, Rush, Malmsteen and Deep Purple. I think that a good idea is to let you student choose a song, of course it has to be a very easy one... Blues is easy and nice to start! what do you think?

Stevee T Slansh was at Perth Rock School in Scotland with my best friend Graeme watt (www.watty2000.plus.com). We all went to see Yngwie in April 1991 I think and Joe in May 1991 (may have been 1990) during the Dreaming in a Blue World Tour. We shared the back of a crowded van with several other musicians. Met Joe for the first time back then. Very few fans hanging about - he was the one that came over to us actually!

Roy recorded much of the songs in my former house in Dundee, Scotland. Graeme plays on Flyman's Knuckle and a couple of others.

So, thats how we know each other.

Well - I am a lawyer and just keep them organised as best i can. I really manage and sort stuff out. But SBM isn't really happening right now - got other ideas with more priority - Slansh being one of them. I do have a full time lawyer job for a company but I really am thinking about playing again. I am going to get into promotion of certain people I know -some of whom are, like Slansh, pretty well know in certain parts of the world. Have Slansh tell u about Uzbekistan! His words were "we were like the Beatles there".

I haven't sung seriously in a couple of years and feel the need. I hate karaoke normally, most real singers do. But i went to a place in NYC a week or two ago with some friends for a laugh - and they made me sing all night - I loved it though. It has been too long.

So I wrote to some people today - Martin Furey (very famous musical family in Ireland) and a few others to ssee about doing more stuff over here. I also talked with Roy about other such things. Would be good to get them over the pond to play here.

I recorded a few things 2 years ago but I have never heard the finished product - Graeme still has it on his PC in Scotland. I'll have to call him about that. See how musicians have ideas but no organizational skills!

So, I am a lawyer, thankfully no music friend has any legal hassle so more of a managing approach for me just now.
