MariMari Glad that you had a blast at NAMM, even if it wasn't how you expected it to turn out :-)

MikeSB Yeah I noticed that he didn't reference his disability at all, an outstanding example on a lot of different levels.

Michelle In this bright future, we can't forget our past Robert Nesta Marley RIP. I just picked up Rita Marley's new book at the weekend, looks like it should be a good read. I've just finished the Cobain bio 'Heavier Than Heaven'........... man, what a fucked up sad story of a life...Damn it I've gone 'doom, gloom and despondency' again.................... VFRrocker - Sunshine's Natural Enemy............ lmao ;-)

CivGeek Happy 500 bro'..................... our little exchanges have got me thinking about distance learning in a serious way!

Delfino Dude, your Dad's comments were really out of order but also pretty typical. He obviously doesn't understand your enthusiasm and he's obviously not heard the 'Whisk song' - ha ha lol. Don't let him bring you down man, it's a tough road learning and instrument, just think of him as one of the potholes! Keep at it man.

DVD of the Day Bumblefoot - Live at RMA. Get on over to Bumblefoot.com if you don't know about Ron Thal, the guy is highly accomplished and highly entertaining - always in my top 5 guitarists. Check him out. - NOW!

For anyone following Suzies line of posts I just want to point out that it was a C I V I L engineer that solved that problem. Powerslave :-P

Mikesb - My first post was, Fri May 21 '04 2:31:40 pm.that was approx. 260 days ago.
I should be at about 510 by the end of the day therefore...
510/260 = 1.96 posts /day
1.96*365 = 715 posts/year
715*7 years of school = 5011.73 posts by end of school.
With a factor of safety of about 300 posts.

VFRocker - No one says you have to do it all at once. That was just the easiest way for us to get it done. Take one class a quarter. The beauty is that it can't hurt you. Three cheers for old bastards in school!!!

Shanley Convicted of Child Rape in Mass.

By DENISE LAVOIE, Associated Press Writer

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Defrocked priest Paul Shanley, the most notorious figure in the sex scandal that rocked the Boston Archdiocese, was convicted Monday of raping and fondling a boy at his Roman Catholic church during the 1980s.

The conviction on all four charges gives prosecutors a high-profile victory in their effort to bring pedophile priests to justice for decades of abuse at parishes around the country.

Shanley, 74, could get life in prison for two counts each of child rape and indecent assault and battery on a child when he is sentenced Feb. 15. His bail was revoked and he was immediately led off to jail.

The victim, now 27, put his head down and sobbed as the verdicts were announced after a trial that turned on the reliability of what he claimed were recovered memories of the long-ago abuse. Shanley showed no emotion as he stood next to his attorney, Frank Modano.

"It appears that the absence of a case is not an impediment to securing a conviction," said Mondano, who promised to appeal.

Nick - Hey man how's it going? Yeah, I missed your post I'm afraid. Anything important? Regarding teaching, that is my job (make of that what you will); I have just over 40 students per week and I'd estimate that about 25-30 of them are/were beginners when they first came to me. So here's my advice:

Start with the basic anatomy of the guitar. This is the body, this is the neck, this is the bridge, this is the nut, etc. They'll need to have this stuff down pretty much immediately if they're going to understand anything you say to them in future lessons. Then, explain how to tune the guitar. Posture and basic technique are covered throughout their lessons - it's not something I ever just teach somone in one go, if you know what I mean... To get their fingers moving I show them the C, A, G, E, and D major chords - or as many of those as possible - but don't even mention the 'Caged' system yet because it'll be too confusing for them this early on. Don't try to throw too much information at them at any one time because it'll be far too much of a work load; think back to when you first started learning to play. I then give them the basic guitar part to 'Hey Joe' (Hendrix), since it uses every single on of those chords. Also, everybody has heard of Jimi so they'll be really fired up at the fact that they're playing Hendrix after the first lesson- this is so important!

I introduce basic scales at about the second lesson, depending on the student. I'll give them the first position of the minor pentatonic scale and the blues scale, and the E shapes of the major and natural minor scales. This gets their fingers working individually and is far more beneficial to them than all that chromatic 1, 2, 3, 4 bullshit.

Always give them sheets with the lesson's content on - chord diagrams, tablature, etc. - and a further sheet with pointers on and/or bullet points to consider, although this doesn't really become necessary until two or three lessons in.

Before you start teaching, consider your priorities and main objectives for your students; what do you consider to be a priority for a guitar player? For me, it's aural development. If you have a good ear, you're capable of just about anything. Theory really is secondary - but also vital in my opinion. Also find out what the student wishes to achieve with guitar. Is it just a hobby or are they seriously considering a career? However, some students will be too young to really know, and that's fine. You should structure your syllabus/curriculum according to both what you consider to be priorities and the student's individual objectives.

I hope you have fun teaching. It can be really frustrating at times, but it can be even more rewarding!!! You'll probably find that it helps your own playing a great deal too...

Neil..things are going ok..my first post was about song writing..i'll can ask you about that again in msn or something. ..thx for the advice on lessons..i'll have to get hold of that hendrix song and learn it myself..looking back to when i had lessons...my teacher always gave me sheets of paper at the end with the lesson's notes on...and sometimes a few pointers.
knowing the instrument is of course important, as you are playing it, you need to know the way around it. what does what and whats it called, how to tune the strings.
Priorities for a guitar player..for me, knowledge of the neck, theory (includes chords and scales on the neck) and good technique (like position of hands and stuff not just sweeping, tapping and that sort of technique). I dont consider aural perception that important to me in terms of transcribing stuff..maybe i will have to change that for students wanting to play their songs. For me, i write songs, i usually make up a rythmn in my head, or a mellody, or a drum beat and work around it, write a song or part of a song around it. and explore different ways of playing it...and working out what sounds best over it, and what sounds cool, what makes it rock..work out the theory too behind it.
At the moment, i aim to give the students the basics. I'm thinking of leaving scales a little later than what you said, of course depending on the student and how quick he learns. i'm aiming at complete beginners and novices anyway...and i hope to find that teaching will improve my playing too, gets me to play more, learn stuff i wouldn't do normally..and maybe look at things again in more detail and from a new angle.
