Figure out what frequency the station is on. Make sure all wires are NOT at a resonant wavelength. Read on, then make sure cables lengths are not a multiple of the wavelength. (300 million divided by 1,340,000 +223.88 Meters. 1 meter = 3.2808399 foot (or 1 foot = 12/39.37 meter) just get close to accurate. I say 1 meter = 3 feet for this task.

To convert any frequency to a wavelength, divide the speed of light by it.

(some info from http://www.zyra.org.uk/freqwav.htm metric measurements)

Speed of Light

The speed of light is 299,792,458 metres per second. Or approximately 300 million metres per second, or 186 thousand miles per second, or 1 foot per nanosecond. The speed of light, sometimes known as "C" (as in E=MC2), is a constant of the Universe. However you measure it, it really is 299,792,458 metres per second precisely, or about 186,282.4 miles per second.

wavelength = 299792458 divided by frequency

To make it easier, it's possible to approximate the speed of light to 300 million. Also, wavelengths are always measured in metres in this formula, and frequencies are in Hertz. 1KHz (kilohertz) is a thousand hertz; 1MHz (megahertz) is a million hertz.

Example: What's the wavelength of Radio1 FM 97-99 megahertz?

99 megahertz is 99 million hertz, so to get the wavelength, it's...

wavelength = 300 million divided by 99 million

= slightly more than 3 metres. (wavelength = 3 meters or 9 feet) 1/4 of that is about 2 feet, the average lngth of an FM radio antenna is 27 inches.

Another example: What's the frequency of BBC Radio4 long wave 1500 metres?

Ok, it's frequency = 300 million divided by 1500 = about 200,000 = 200 kilohertz

(The station is now on 198 kilohertz)

Example: 1340 AM station.

300 million divided by 1,340,000 = 223 meters (+/-), or 669 feet.

10 ft speaker cable is at the 66th harmonic.

Joe Satriani

Steven Wilde had been having seizures, and it takes a lot out of him. Pray for him, please.

I think he should be the guy to do your next interview. That is my official nomination for him. He always tries to help others, even when he is suffering.

I am sorry for the overly technical answer. Like you said, you are way to close to the transmitter!!!

the best antenna is alway 1/4 wavelength or 1/2 wavelength or even 1 whole wavelength. As close as you are, the only thing I could think of is make sure all equipment is grounded, and if you could put a metal screen around the amp (ground the screen to earth ground by a wire going to a ground rod in the dirt) shielding is paramount in a close proximity to strong RF (radio frequency) fields.

Use the best connectors on your cables, and maybe get a .001 ( or close) capacitor soldered across your input jack of the amp, and output jack of your guitar.

Try wrapping the amp in alluminum foil, then run a jumper-cable from the foil to an allready grounded metal object (water pipe, etc) to see if that reduces the interference.

More ideas later. I need to think about this....

Maybe more ideas tommorow after 9am Pacific time (10 AM Mountain), I get back home from taking the kids to school around 9 am my time.

No mention of the JS1000 Ltd Ed. on Ibanez site(UK). Anyone know how I can find out about it? (Where, cost etc)(Don't mention Headstock distribution, already tried them)

First off, make sure the electrical outlet is wired properly. Any hardare store or Radio Shack should have a cheap plugin tester that will show if the wiring is correct.

Sometimes, neutral and "hot" are reversed. Sometimes the ground terminal is not grounded. Here is a lousy diagram (but accurate).

well, the drawing does not show correctly, so here I go...

Neutral is big hole on left, "hot" is small hole on right, ground is little roundish shaped hole on bottem. It Looks like Mister Bill saying, "oh, nooooooo!"

| | | Neutral | | Hot |

O Ground

Without the handy-dandy plugin receptacle tester, the instructions below will work.......

Your volt meter should NOT measure any voltage between Neutral and Ground. You should read about 120 Volts between "hot" and neutral, and between "hot" and ground.

Now on to the guitar and amp... I have a feeling that when your volume knob is in the circuit (on), the resistance of the potentiometer or"pot" (knob) plus the other guitar wiring is reducing the resonance of your guitar cable (s) going into the amp. Less resonance + less RFI. Adding 1 or more ".001" capacitors will change the resonance.

Capacitors act as a high pass filter. Example: you would probably not get any RFI on a tweeter if the stereo is off, but the woofer may pass RFI with the stereo off.

Put caps across (parallel) or in series (in-line-with) a wire to see which works best. However, a cap (capacitor) will reduce the amount of bass if in "series" with the signal, allowing only mid frequencies and treble frequencies through (if any signal could get through that value of capacitor. I say put the caps in parallel. I put 200 uF capacitors in series with my 5" speakers in my car; that kept the bass form distorting them (only some bass, midrange and treble passed through), while my woofers produced the lower freqs.

Sound is definitely at lower frequencies than RF, so I say coils (chokes) are probably useless for this particular problem).

Put a capacitor across the signal lead and the ground lead (the 2 leads of the guitar's jack for example). You could also try a ".001" capacitor across (or in series with?) the speaker and across the amplifier's input jacks (where the guitar cable plugs in)

Is the noise there when the cable is unplugged from the amp?

If not, is the noise there when only the guitar is plugged into the amp with no effects pedals?

The guitar could be acting as an antenna, since the body is wood, RF goes right through it. Having a grounded shield around all the electronics of the guitar (aluminum RV/camper tape or something similar around the pots, switches, and jack) could help. Just remember any shield must be grounded.

Older humbucker pickups were shielded in a metal cover. Plastic pickups usually are worse for RF.

You may get ground loop noise from having multiple ground points if you ground your guitar directly to ground, but then again maybe not.

Try this. Take the guitar to a grounded object, and see if the radio goes away when any metal parts of the guitar are touching the grounded object (clothes dryer, cold water pipe, a wire going straight to a ground rod, etc.)

Last resort... Move to a different house way, way, far away from the radio towers ;)...

Later... Let us know what you find out.

I pray and hope for everyone out there to have better health, there's so many ill people who need the prayers. I found out today there's a 9 year old boy in my town who has a heart condition, so he stays in the hospital most of the time. His family recently bought my CD and the boy has done nothing but listen to my music in the hospital and the trips to and from the hospital. I hope it brings peace in his soul. When I hear stories like that, no money can replace that feeling when your music touches someone.

aussieRGman, round the top of the hole where the trem arm drops into the bridge, is there a threaded collar? If so, your trem arm is meant to have a (loose) mobile collar on the short end, which has a thread on the inside, which screws onto the bridge like a screw-cap.

If you trem arm doesn't have one then you need to find an Ibanez dealer and get them to get you one.

If not, then your bridge probably has a collarless trem socket, where the arm just pushes in. What does the end of the trem arm look like? Does it have a pair of white plastic bushes, or is it just straight?

Somewhere on the bridge, usually on the flat surface on the opposite side to where the arm fits, the name of the bridge is engraved.

To tighten the jack-socket plate, you may need to take the back cover off the guitar. With that done you stop the jack socket from twisting around inside when you tighten it. Then you just have to tighten the nut with a spanner or socket if one will fit.

marimariSRV, scanning is never nice, and photos never look the same when you scan them. What finish are your photos printed in? matte or gloss? Some time in the next few months I plan to get a digital SLR camera, maybe I could be your disciple? :-)

Also, amen on getting an S-Series! You should, I think you'd really enjoy it!

jelly man, happy 1k!
jazzzzzy, hahaha, your account of AWMAWY in G303 was hilarious! that's just wrong man....all kinds of wrong!
XtrChessReal, dude that sucks so bad. I'm really sorry for you man, there's f*ck-all you can do. Radio broadcast pulses, especially DAB, are worse than cellphones for wrecking everything around them. The only way around it would be to line your wall with lead. I guess you could get some wire mesh, like a couple of miles of it, and just hang it up between your house and the radio masts! or get some bolt croppers and go have some fun with their power supply! MUAHAHAHA. I really don't know what you can do, except maybe putting a few sheets of wire mesh up on the wall of your house, but that probably won't do anything.

However, I've just read kd6aaj's post so there's an option there! haha.

civgeek, it wasn't your imagination! I still didn't really get it, but it's all relative!
kd6aaj, er, how come you just know that sh*t? That's nuts! Cool though, could be very useful!

Got my flight, hotel + platinum ticket sorted for the Reno, Nevada show - can't wait.

One problem though, Bizarre Guitar in Reno say that the JS-1200 is on backorder until June earliest - I was hoping if I ordered one now that it would be enough time for them to sort me one out for April 16th.

How does the Ibanez production work? Do they produce a batch and then wait for them to disappear before creating another batch?
