Hey everybody, whether I have passed it I don't know, but finally at the grand old age of 32 I sat my Grade 8 Piano exam (associated board) today- very nerve-racking... will find out in a couple of weeks whether I passed.. keep your fingers crossed for me please! :-)

Also, I am hours away from ordering the JSX amp, but can anyone tell me what the sound quality is like on a low volume setting? Also, dumb question maybe, but does it have headphone facility? We live in a victorian sem-detached house with quite thick walls... Thanks for your help :-)

STEVEN- make sure you e-mail to the onetel e-mail address!

Who has already won aftershow party passes to either Vai or Satch? If you did, is it an actual party after the show backstage, or is it more of a meet and greet sort of thing?

This is going pretty far, actaully very far, but worth a shot (I know everyone's gonna think this is crazy, but I'm ready for it!) Who wants to help me come up with $1700 by March 30th!?!?! I bet everyone who is reading this right now has their hand up and is ready to write me some checks...if not get started! Need to get enough money to buy Vai's Jem so he can sign it and play it since I won aftershow passes!!! I know *everyone's* going to want to join in on this nice event for me. I have no way at all to come up with $1700 in two weeks or so, any ideas ~other~ than illegal stuff, I'm not into that. I already sold just about all the pedals I had that I don't use because I recently updated my whole board or just took things off or added something in replace of something else, and am keeping it simple, no modulation pedals which most people use to cover up pathetic guitar playing. I actually only have one modulation pedal, an old DOD Flanger that I bought like 10 or 11 years ago. My setup - Dunlop 535Q wah - Boss SD-1 (gain boost) - Boss BD-2 (for when I want to play some bluesy stuff) - Boss DS-1 to rock out with - Boss HR-2 Harmonist to play some Thin Lizzy stuff and sick twin (even triple!) lead solos or rythms - and then a delay pedal. I only kept a few pedals, sold a bunch and made A LOT on them, not enough though! Gotta buy Keeley's true bypassed looper so I can throw my whammy pedal back on my board, it kills my tone!

- Anyone know where (other than Fulltone's official site) where I can order the Fulltone Ultimate Octave Fuzz pedal (in the US), it's one sick pedal. Or has anyone used a MXR jimi hendrix octave fuzz pedal, how is it? And yes, I know it only produces an overtone that sounds like it's actually playing the octave above.

To The Musically Minded:

In a musical sense, what does 'simile' mean when written above a staff? I know in a literary sense it means to refer to something as something else using the words "like" or "as".

Also, triplets, how does one play them? lol...

tune, yeah it goes good thanks amigo! Spring does, indeed, seem to have landed! It's a nice suprise, cause it's been fairly dry here the last week or so, and it's warming up! usually it would be raining by now! hehe

estrela, thanks for your response, that was very helpful! I see a lot of documentaries and stuff on the TV saying what a hard place Brazil is to live in, and how everyone either works for or is controlled by the big drug-dealing gangs and how it's horrible, but then I wonder why Brazillian people, like yourself, and like F1 driver Rubens Barrichello, always seem so happy. You guys always seem so welcoming and helpful too - it sounds like Brazil/Sao Paolo is a much nicer place than the TV makes out!
marimariSRV, do you have EJ's "Electromagnets" album? Austin got me into it a few months ago.....I couldn't find it anywhere in the UK so I imported it from Florida. It is such a blinding album! I dunno if you like Fusion much, but as Austin said to me, no EJ fan should be without it!
Delfino, yeah it's definitely some tricky work. The hardest thing is working on already-complete guitars. It would be far easier to build your own guitar body, then you can screw the jigs down and get all the cuts made in a day. I am retrofitting a Les Paul type fixed bridge to my Ibanez GIO. The guitar came with a strat type trem, so retrofitting a hefty hardtail means routing 9mm out of the top of the guitar. To rout it you need to use a routing jig made of 12mm MDF, but you can't crew the template (jig) to the guitar cause it'd leave it full of holes, which means coming up with an ingenious way of making the guitar and the jig solidly bound.

I've done it though, got all the routing done today, blocked off the old trem cavity where the sustain block went. Tomorrow I have to drill a pair of 10mm holes in the body for the bridge posts to go into. I have to drill them at the PERFECT spacing, otherwise the whole thing is f*ck*d. This is going to be so damn hard, the margin for error is non-existent. It's great though, I'm loving doing it.

Thing is, I'm lucky. Just up the road is the boarding school I used to work at. I worked in the Design Tech department, one of the best DT departments in the country, and guitar making is it's most popular Extra Curricular Activity. The technician, a good friend of mine and my ex-supervisor, is a guru of anything to do with design tech, and is hugely experienced in making all the sorts of things you'd never have dreamed of making. He's an excellent luthier, so with his expertise and experience, and with the departments first-class resouces, my task is really pretty simple. I would never have been able to do it at home.

Sorry, that was really lengthy, but I'd hate to see you undertake a project only to find half way through that you might not actually be able to do it! That said, if you know exactly what to expect and you know you're capable, then go for it! I love doing this stuff.....it forces me to be methodical and is very rewarding!

Post 956! Okay this is one of the big ones!

The 1982-1986 Porsche 956 is the most successful car in autosport history. It competed in global GT events, American IMSA racing and LeMans 24hr endurance races, as well as countless other racing series, and has celebrated many victories in every one of them.

It's twin-turbocharged flat six cylinder engine was mounted in front of the rear wheels, unlike the rear-engine 911, making it very stable at speed, and offereing great handling characteristics. It out-handled, out-accelerated and outran the competition repeatedly, both under management of Porsche's works team, and privateer race teams.

With regulation changes in the mid 90's the 956 formed the basis for it's revised successor, the 962, which carried on the legacy. The 962 variant of the 956 was so succesful in everything it entered, that endurance racing regulations had to be changed to the point that Porsche 956's could no longer compete.

Steven Wilde, er, see my above post to Delfino for details! haha. The GIO project is going good. I guess it's going to look a little weird with this shallow cavity cut out of the top. I'll be spraying the cavity metallic black so it's not too obvious....it'll still be kinda crazy though! Oh well, it's going to be great! Maybe I should take some photos of the process so you all can see how I'm going about it!

Suzie, sorry but I very much doubt you'll be finding a headphones output on the amp! however, it should sound just about passable at low volume. My Legacy doesn't sound brilliant at low volume, but it's ok, and you can always stick a couple of pedals in front of it for practicing with distortion/overdrive sounds. Will you ever get an opportunity to crank it? cause that's when it'll really start working properly and start sounding sweet.

I don't know though, it might sound fine at low level. Some amps, like Mesa's and Engl's are engineered to sound very useable at any volume, but because of that they can sound a little compressed. Less intelligent valve amps like my Legacy, for example, are a more traditional design, and sound best when you wind them up to about 60% operating power!

I don't know if the JSX has been engineered to be intelligent (a-la Engl/Boogie) or unintelligent (a-la Carvin or Fender or vintage Marshall). regardless, I'd still get it anyway, whatever you do with it will be great fun!

Congrats on doing your grade 8 today! All credit and respect to you! I know you haven't yet been told how you did, but I think it's awesome that you sat the exam, regardless of your assessment!

Billy Joel Back in Rehab

The Piano Man is going in for a tune-up.

In the wake of his hospitalization for stomach problems last month, the Billy Joel (news) has signed on for a stint in rehab to deal with a drinking problem.

"Following a recent bout of severe gastro-intestinal distress, Billy Joel has checked himself into an undisclosed rehabilitation facility for treatment of alcohol abuse," his rep said in a statement. "Mr. Joel has asked that his privacy be respected."

Last month, the rep denied reports that Joel was suffering from pancreatitis, which is typically brought on by heavy alcohol consumption.

It's not the first time Joel has ended up in rehab. In June 2002, he checked into the Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut for treatment of a substance-abuse problem, just days after crashing his Mercedes on Long Island and suffering minor injuries.

That car crash marked the first in a string of auto accidents for the entertainer. In January 2003, Joel totaled his Mercedes after driving off the road and crashing into a tree on Long Island. The singer had to be pulled from the wreckage of the car by firefighters and spent the night in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

Then, last April, Joel was on his way to pick up a pizza when he lost control of his 1967 vintage Citron on a slick road and wound up parked in the home of a 94-year-old woman. No one was injured in the crash.

While Joel may be an unlucky motorist, he's proven to be luckier in love. He swapped vows with third wife, 23-year-old television correspondent Katie Lee (news - web sites), last October.

Of late, the singer has been in a writing state of mind. Last year, he penned the children's book Good Night, My Angel: A Lullabye and his upcoming oeuvre, A New York State of Mind, is due out later this year.
