TOALL: I've been practicing with a band I just put together, and we finally have me on guitar, organist, bass, and drummer. Everything sounds great. The problem is that we will be playing in very small rooms, and even though the drummer is playing with rods instead of sticks, and he isn't a monster loud drummer, the drums are still way too loud. This is causing everyone else to have to crank up to solo over the drummer. Does any one have any suggestions about how to bring the drum volume down without ruining the tone/feel for our drummer? Are there any kind of drum head dampers that will bring the volume down? Thanks

maybe towls over the snare, in the drum kick part ?
i did see on tv recently some electronic drum kits ,
they looked exactly like a normal kit but its electronice, even
the symbles , it was on discovery channel or something
but in the mean time try towls or different sticks
had similar probs with various bands during my life in music

Hey Joe,
I'm very proud to contact you. I'm Jean-Michel and working as bands manager in Paris - France.
I'm managing BUMBLEFOOT here for Europe and we are curently working on the next BBF European tour in october/november. I know you met him last summer and this meeting was a very good surprise for you.
Well, I just want to know maybe you'll be in europe this time and you can be on stage, one time at least with BBF, it could be a great pleasure for all of us.
Feel free to contact me, we can talk about everything.
I'm looking forward to your answer.
Best regards,
JM

I cut my teeth on an Apple 2GS. When it came time to choose a platform for music. I choose Mac 'cause it's easier to move around on for me and I knew I was only using the Mac for music and DVD creation. PC owns the business world. I have a Digi 002 with Pro Tools LE software. I love this system for so many reasons. As far as running PC stuff on Mac. There are cross platform programs. The cool thing with Pro Tools is you can create a file on a Mac and open it on a PC(providing the PC has Pro Tools)You just save the file with a PC ext. and bamm it opens on the PC. Thats another reason why I stayed with Mac. With that option you can still have PC customers. Plus there's a movie track in Pro Tools. I video taped and recorded my band live. I than imported the video into iMovie and created the DVD. Than I bounced the recorded tracks into Pro Tools along with the video on the movie track. Lined the audio with video and bamm, had locked audio to video.. This works seemlessly and I had myself a great little DVD of the band. The cool thing about that is I use it for promotion 'cause the video don't lie. Club owners can see exactly what there getting plus they're impressed that you created this yourself. Some of the songs are posted on our web site. Check it out if you want. Garargeband is great and it's getting more powerful with updates. You can record 8 tracks at a time now and it also has a autotune feature to tune vocals. GarageBand songs will play on a PC if you save it as a mp3. I don't remember if you can save as a wav file. I hope this helps.

I was thinkin' about your problem with your drummer. Try a plastic freezer bag on the snare. A towel might dampen the snap from the snare. I've never tried this but it's thicker than a Baggie but more transparent than a towel. It could work. What do you think?

Hey Joe, I have been a HUGE FAN going on almost 20 years! I wanted to suggest something for your next G-3 gig. I know the sets are short but I thought it would be cool if each player played a quick song from another G-3 performer. For instance if the other players were Vai and Malmsteen, YOU could do a Vai or Malmsteen song, Vai could do a Satriani or Malmsteen tune etc. I thought it would be really cool to see other interpretations of songs. OR for the Finale Jam, everyone could jam to one of each players songs. I think you can see where I am going with this idea. Anyway just a thought. Hope to see you in Dallas Texas REAL soon. Becareful in the faraway lands!!

OCPS470 - My ex drummer said that if he had it all to do again he would get an electric set. He really liked the sounds, the feel, and the extra capabilities with the triggers and such. However, if this is not an option ($$) then the drummer is just going to have to learn to have some touch. I play in unamplified combos at school and the drummers there can play with the dynamics of a song to create moods. I think that over all most "rock" drummers don't learn control and dynamics. Don't know if that helps.

Civgeek Yeah I've almost finshed my sentence at this current college lol Its a college full of really great people and some of the teachers are just absolutely wicked, the kind of people look back on with fond memories.
4 weeks of lessons, followed by 4 weeks of study leave then I will be finished. I would have spent 7 years at this secondary school and sixth form college...no doubt I will miss it, I can remember all the good times and all the bad times, and the friends I met here are some of the best people I have ever known. Its friends like the ones I have now that ultimately mould people into a person themself. There have been ups and downs with them, but looking back it has always been over stupid shit that doesn't matter like girls for example.
Talking about drums though, I know you said you play unamplified, but have you ever played amplified and ran the mics through guitar effects processors?
My drummer and I were considering testing it out as two of the songs I've wrote have had distortion on the drum kits and we are keen to seen if we can replicate it....Not only this but I think an envelope effect on drums would sound very funky indeed :-)
Almost party time...finishes at 2am and I'm staying the duration.

one more thing... which do u think will be better for my bands lead guitarist.... a fender fat strat standard or a fender fat strat 50th anniversary edition with a floyd rose tremolo??? we basically play classical rock and are planning to move into jazz and blues although we'll need to practice a lot b4 we do

FRENCHFANATIC, Bienvenu sur le site! There's a very good chance Joe will be playing in Europe this year. He said last January "We are looking into a few European summer festivals as well..." but there aren't still any news. I'm waiting for that too (and lots of European fans of course :-) so we must stay tuned and wait if one of those festivals is in our area. Fingers crossed!
Hi everyone, life's been very busy lately and I'm still surfing through lots of posts ;-)

I can't answer your netwoking questions but my son Aaron can. He's graduating Devry with a communications and networking degree this summer. I'll email you tonight with your answers. The G5 you mention is great. The superdrive is a CD and DVD burner. You can burn and play DVD's on that Mac, Like The Satch Tapes or Live In Frisco..... lol !!!!
( both are awesome if you don't have them)even better The Blues Mavericks DVD (even more laughs) Do the research. Your spending a lot of money. Make sure this is what you want. Mac or PC you can't go wrong. The old saying is "find the software you want and buy the computer that runs it."
Thanks for your comments on my site. My older son Sean created that for me. He's a great artist and he's getting into Web Developement. Go to his site from mine. Just click on Code Fusion Web and away you go. Go to the fan art page here at Satriani.com. Sean painted a mural of Surfing With The Alien on my wall in our studio. Webmaster Jon posted this. Thanks again Jon you're the best.

Delfino, dude that sucks about the college assholes banning rock bands! haha....their loss.
Hope you have a cool time at the party's, play it cool with the hottie you don't know......will you be taking photos at this one too? ;-)
TASTEY, hahaha, that baked bean story was pretty damn good!
BigBunny, yeah Worms is a game....it's been going for years, almost as long as lemmings, but is far better. It cracks me up, great fun.
I've never noticed the cardboard crowd at the end of Ronin.....I'm unsure as to whether or not to look out for it....I'm intrigued, but I don't want to ruin my experience of the film!
civgeek, "I think that over all most "rock" drummers don't learn control and dynamics".....damn staright. I have noticed the same thing about a lot of players, and having had the pleasure of working with a few drummers with excellent dynamics, have become a real snob about it! haha. That mainly why I think Virgil Donati was a far better acquisition for Vai's band than Jeremy Colson. I don't give a sh*t how cute Jeremy is, or how hard he plays his kit.....Virgil's touch is fantastic.....his drum solo is my favourite part of Vai's live DVD (oh, and the bit when Eric Sardinas comes out at the end!).
who else has had to re-read wolf2's post just to make sure? hahaha, top-notch!
