Anti-G8 protesters clash with police in Scotland

By Jeremy Lovell

GLENEAGLES, Scotland (Reuters) - Anti-G8 protesters clashed with police on Wednesday and disrupted traffic near the heavily fortified hotel where Group of Eight leaders are to meet.

Hooded protesters broke car windows, threw bricks and clashed with riot police in pre-dawn violence in nearby Stirling as they left camps to head to the Gleneagles hotel, which is protected by 10,000 police and a 5 mile steel fence.

Police said they had made 16 arrests for "minor public order offences".

"We are here to stop the G8. Putting profit over people is destroying our planet," said Sophie Reynolds, 39, an environmentalist from London, as she dragged branches across the northbound carriageway of the main A9 highway.

The protesters were from a range of anti-capitalist, anti-globalisation and anarchist groups.

The bulk of protests ahead of the G8 meeting, including a march by 200,000 people in Edinburgh last weekend, have been by campaigners pressing world leaders to offer debt relief and more aid for Africa.

Some protesters wore camouflage gear, others were dressed as clowns, blowing whistles and beating drums and chanting anti-G8 slogans. A group of protesters sat on train lines between Stirling and Perth, forcing back a commuter train.

A Reuters reporter witnessed at least 20 incidents on the highway south of Gleneagles, where protesters sat down or dragged branches across it, as convoys of police vans rushed along the road, trying to head off the protest groups.

"We have been rushing all over the place, all night. This is going to be a very long day," said one police officer standing by the side of the road, watching a group of protesters through binoculars.

A march by 5,000 anti-G8 protesters later on Wednesday will come close to the barricades around the Gleneagles hotel. Police have said they will respond robustly to any violence.

_________________________________________________

"The protesters were from a range of anti-capitalist, anti-globalisation and anarchist groups. " Shit man, who better to throw a knock-down drag-out riot? Funny how there are EIGHT men, but only one ever gets mentioned? Good ol' George. Always the life of the party.

What a night...we created two new cocktails...

"The Walking, Talking Steven Hawking"

A snibble of port
Raspberry Archers
Orange Juice
And a little bottle of something I can't remember the name of.

and

"The Julian Clarey, OK, Bang Up The Ass"

A mass of port
Watermelon flavoured Bacardi Breezer
Orange Juice

and a cocktail umbrella with sparklers....

Each one was rather nice, with the latter being slightly more fruity.

civgeek...read schmeed...George Benson doesn't read. Hendrix, SRV didn't read...Erroll Garner didn't read....music first...mechanics second. Some of the greatest musician's of all time didn't read...it's in their souls first & foremost!!

Yes...knowing theory is important, and reading can open doors you may have never exlpored, but fi you ain't got the spark...why bother with the kindling, if you can't torch it!

That's my opinion, and I'm stickin' too it....lol

Peace out! Firestarter-Steve

mikesb...glad to see ya back...I'll ask Greg Howe if you can contact him for the interview on Saturday!

Delfino - "The Walking, Talking Steven Hawking" Holy Crap that's funny!!

Steve - Half of me agrees with you. For playing what you feel no reading is neccessary. But, in learning someone elses music being able to sightread is HUGE. It cuts down the learning curve. Plus from an ego stand point I like to be able to
1. Do things that most people can't. I know that is very shallow but we all need to have pride in something.
2. Talk music on a higher level. I just like talking music. and having the ability to dicuss it in an organized manner is makes me feel good.

All that probably comes out in my playing too as I tend to have a little less feeling in my playing than some. I don't think my playing speaks to anyone on a higher level. I'm just a solid guitarist.

BAHDUH- Haven't heard from Jazzzzzzzy for a long time, have we all? Hope he's ok, still rocking out somewhere! How are you? Hope you are ok too...

CIVGEEK- Will let you know in a few days! I must admit I am looking forward to meeting the new guitar... :)

CUTHBERT- If you live near to London like I do, it would be condolences, seeing as the arsehole Mayor Ken Livingston will be sure to wangle an increase in the congestion charge especially for the olympics, plus whatever else he can come up with... not to mention the expenses we will have to pay no doubt through tax and council tax..... grrr.... I suppose it's good for the country's morale but CRAP for my bank balance I fear... will have to wait and see. It reminds me a bit of when King Charles I couldn't get the Long Parliament to give him money so called in loads of taxes e.g. "Coronation Tax" where everyone had to pay taxes for not attending the coronation even though they hadn't been invited in the first place!!! I wonder if dear old Ken has thought of that one yet..... LOL

Hey All,

Just a quick post before my Eric Johnson show tonight in Philly.......UPDATE ON STEVEN WILDE: I spoke with Steven on Sunday, he's doing OK but still has a lot of stress in his life. His health is stable/good much better than it was a few months ago. His father will be going to a nursing home in a few weeks, a little sooner than he expected. He needs to get a new roommate to help with the bills. He's not on his computer much. I've not gotten any emails from him for a while. I'm not sure what's going on with that. Keep him in your prayers, he needs to be strong during this difficult time. He wanted me to give you a message from him...........Steven Thanks you for your kindness and well wishes! He misses everyone very, very much. He hope to come back soon. He's sorry that his song didn't make it onto the T2J CD and hopes that someday you'll hear it. He's happy for all those that made it. Thank you for keeping him in your prayers. God Bless.

Have a great night, I've got to head to my concert.......

Mari

Hello, Joe! My wife and I feel so deprived!!! We live in a small Southeast NE town and none of the Rock Stations ever play any Satch! 8-( In fact, it seems that only a few of us local guitar players are familiar with you and your great music. My wife and I had your song "Always With You, Always With Me" played at our wedding and only a few recognized it, although all were impressed. We're hoping that someday your tour schedule might include a stop out here in "fly-over" country. Please bring your strange, beautiful music out here, cuz there is love here in "fly-over" space!!! Thanx for still rockin' tom & pox
