Another Satch / JSX amp question...

Does anyone know if Joe uses or has ever used a power attenuator for his JSX heads? (ie: Power Brake, Hot Plate, etc)

Thanks!

Delfino, nicely done bro, nicely done. A and two C's is a nice bundle of points, and all that matters is that you've got what you needed to get on the course you want to do! Speaking of which, did you make a decision yet?

I personally think you should make the transfer to film work, cause CGI is what you really want to do, more than game-design, right?

aussieRGman, haha, that was almost a "stream of consciousness" thing going there dude! Yeah I'm sure many of us share the mixed feelings about sometimes wanting to throw the guitar, and sometimes wanting to play it for ever. I've decided the negativity comes when I'm over-analysing my playing, and not thinking about the actual music. That's usually the best time to put it down and leave it right alone for a few days. Then when you're refreshed, pick it up again and think positively, paying attention to the sound of a single note, and how that note makes you feel. They're small steps man, but they're steps in the right direction!

I've just been helpfully informed by amazon that I can now preorder my X-Box 360 for 210 pounds! bastards.....I know I shouldn't, but I can't resist!

Update: X-Box 360 preordered.

I'm going to see the tutors during the first week, see what they think I should do. I mean no one can make the decision but me but I s'pose they can clarify for me whats actually involved in the CGI course so I can make a more educated decision.

At the moment I'm still stuck though on what to do...and my tongue hurts and it feels nasty as I burnt it on a KFC...I think God was smiting me for breaking my diet...lol

Hi Joe, or as true guitar fans from trinidad and all over the world call u -"SATCH". Well man, I just want to start off by telling you thanks for the music and the inspiration. YOu are undoubtedly the best living guitarist out there in my books in the avenue of Rock and Roll/Virtusoso/ Innovative! I have most of your albums, and I have been playing guitar for about 15 years now. I started playing serious when I heard your album "Not of this Earth" and was particularly impressed with the emotion and virtuosity of that song, memories and new day which changed my playing from a speedometer to a more soulful playing. I knew you were the best because your songs stay in my head like Hendrix's "May this be Love' or "Little WIng" or Page's "Rain Song" or "Over the hills and far away". Otherwise, what i want to say is that you rule!!!!! You keep the dream alive and you are the one to make the aliens come on earth and understand us with your futuristic music...lol. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR MUSIC SATCH!! Biggest Respectful Fan ot Trinidad & Tobago Roger De Freitas

JPgtr: Joe doesn't use an attenuator.....however, I own a Hotplate, and it works great!! I don't need to use it for the JSX though, because if you set the master volume to 10 and then set the channel volumes where you want, you can get a super fat warm tone at even low volume.

Hey OCPS470, thanks for the reply.

Do you know for a fact Joe doesn't have an attenuator? Are the gear "reports" here that accurate? His "real" amps are off-stage and I can see where this device might be overlooked if someone asked him what "pedals" or effects he uses...

BTW, Cranking the master up to 10 and then lowering the channel volume knobs will not create the same effect because you still aren't driving the power output tubes to maximum effect (true power tube overdrive). Don't get me wrong, everyone raves about the low-volume tone, and I'm sure it rocks, but this is tone created from the pre-amp tube stage. Still can be good, but is a different overdrive.

Have you tried the Hot Plate out with your JSX? Compared it to your current settings? I'm going to be picking up a JSX head very soon and was thinking of getting a Hot Plate to play with true power tube overdrive.

Thanks again!

JP

Was very nice to meet you a year ago in Seattle suburb music store. Yes since you signed my fancy bicycle it is faster, many have been filled with envy. Nice to meet Mick also -very nice guy. I can't thank you enough as your music was theraputic after I got hit by a car it was thought I "may not walk again" 32 fractures of the tibia. My leg was a mess but I rode an indoor trainer for a year listening to your awesome music. I almost gave up but your skill ,determination, and devotion was the inspiration to work hard at my passion of cycling. I am not going to compete with Lance but I am back! Thanks Joe

JPgtr: huh....I was under the impression that the master volume knob controlled the leval of the power amp (ie the power tubes) but maybe I'm wrong. The thing is, using an attenuater (to my knowledge) won't drive the amp anyharder into power tube compression if you're running the master all the way up. It would allow you to say, run the master up and run the channel volume (preamp gain) loud too (so loud that you would need the attenuator to avoid making yourself sterile) haah! As far the hotplate goes, it is very very transparent. For the best results, however, you need to get the hotplate that matched the ohm rating of the cab you will be using. For example, the hotplate I own is 8ohms. I'm playing the JSX through a 16ohm legacy cab. When using the JSX through the Hotplate, I have to set the JSX at 8ohms to safely use the 8 ohm hotplate. This still sounds very good, but the EQ controls on the amp and hotplate have less effectivness. If I owned a 16ohm hotplate there would be zereo difference between the attenuated and unattenuated (cranked without hotplate) tone. I only own the 8ohm hotplate, because I bought it to use with my fender amp that has an 8ohm speaker in the cab. ANyway, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about the amp. I've tested just about everything on it, including things most people don't bother with. I've also picked up some tips from the tech guys at Peavey. If you get a chance, check out www.chrispeters.net and check out the music. Thanks

oh...I forgot to mention that while I don't know for a fact that Joe doesn't use an attenuator, he's never mentioned it, and he's never used one in his previous rigs. Also, I've never seen one in any photos. Oh, and the last clue is from reading an article in EQ about the guys who were doing the mixing on the recent Satch tours. They said the guitar amp stage volume is very loud, so that would seem to suggest zero attenuators. So, nothing absolute, but a lot of good deductive reasoning
