Do The Stu!

I know exactly where you live, I used to live right off of Anahiem and Redondo, right down the street. I worked for Vons for 14 years all over Long Beach, Broadway& Atlantic, Belmont Shores ,Lakewood, ETC ETC.... You name it!!!, I even worked at the traffic circle Vons for 4 years, plus I used to do sercurity for the Long Beach Arena for 3 years

My Dad, Brothers & Sister still live in Long Beach, right off of 7TH and Orange ave, which is basically "shitville" but they seem to enjoy it. My Dad and one of my brothers are still trying to put a band together, so if they need a bass player, I'll let you know.

One thing I can say about Long Beach is that it grows on you. It a place I miss at times, and a place I will never forget. I graduated from Poly High back in "88" . All three of my kids were born at St. Mary's Hospital off of Atlantic Ave. A lot of great memories. I just wish they would put an "In & Out Burger" here in Washington.

Okay...so I promised people a few paper-related links... Go here if you want to read my school's paper on a daily basis (not that I expect anyone to do that, but yeah). I wrote a few things over the summer...a story on a shooting at school, a column on what I don't like about Clear Channel, and a column about the ABA's recent suggestions concerning the selling of soft drinks in schools. I think the Clear Channel column will be the most interesting to people here, so you can go here to read it. If you want links to the other stuff, just ask me...

Now, for some stuff that is probably more interesting...

I went to a few very cool concerts this summer. I know I mentioned a few of them here, so I'm sorry if there are any repeats. I saw Dream Theater / Megadeth in Irvine on 7/24, Collective Soul in Long Beach on 7/27, and a whole bunch of bands at the first night of Street Scene in San Diego on 7/29.

Dream Theater was awesome, as I expected. Everyone here knows how good they are live, so I don't think I need to say much about their set. ;-)

Collective Soul was very cool, although I don't think this concert was as good as the one I saw a few months ago up in Ventura.

Street Scene was tons of fun. I saw Garbage there...they were very cool, although Shirley Manson did have a lot of help (production-wise) with her vocals.

The Killers closed the first night of Street Scene. Has anyone here heard of them? They're absolutely amazing...they have one of the best rhythm sections I've heard in a long time. Go here to listen to a few sound clips. Check out Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine, Somebody Told Me, and On Top.

I saw the Dave Matthews Band in Sacramento on 8/16. Click here for the set list. I'm seeing them again this Saturday and Sunday, so I'll wait until after those shows to post a review here...

Has anyone else here caught any cool summer concerts?

civgeek - Hi. The Dam Road in Folsom is closed indefinitely, as far as I know. I think they were working on building a bridge next to it, but I don't know. I went home for a few days last week (but didn't drive over that way)...I'm sure if it was open, my parents would have told me.
962 - This is probably a stupid question, but I wasn't really around here to ask it at a more appropriate time... Eric Johnson's Bloom was released in the US a few months ago. Is it available in the UK as well? Do you have it? What are your thoughts on it?
Shredinator - Yeah, Deep Purple with Joe Satriani bootlegs are fairly easy to find. I have a few of them packed away somewhere.
fenderboy333 - Play a pinch harmonic around the 24th fret with your right hand and lower and raise the whammy bar with your left hand.
cheese101 - Thanks for sharing that... It's kinda cool to see Joe playing something other than an Ibanez.

...Austin...

Hi Joe Satch!!!

Dude, I had to ask something, and any fans who can answer please feel free to do so. I was over at Blabbermouth last week and heard all about this amazing new Van Halen book called "Van Halen 101." It's supposed to be a pretty detailed look at the man & his band, their career, music, impact and so on. The foreword was done by Brian May of Queen! As if that's not sick enough, the book contains a tribute to Eddie by over 100 of the sickest musicians on the planet. Dudes like Holdsworth, Wylde, Vai, Hetfield and tons more.

My question of course is has anyone heard whether Joe participated in the Eddie tribute? I've always heard he respects Eddie (rightfully so) and a buddy of mine said that Joe is indeed a part of the Eddie tribute and shared a few cool words about Ed. Can anyone confirm or deny that? I was over at the official Author House website (AH is publishing/releasing the book) and looked up VH 101 and found a bunch of info, but nothing as to confirm Joe's involvement. So can anyone help me out? I'll probably get this book regardless cuz it sounds killer, but if Joe did indeed take part in the Eddie tribute, well then I'm all over it for sure!!!

Austin, yeah Bloom got international release on the same date. I didn't get the "free poster" with mine, but it's a truly beautiful album. I love the three parts to it, although the first part is clearly my favourite. "Columbia" is the most emotive tune I've heard since I first heard the melodies in the Venus Isle album.

I think Eric's writing and arrangement on the new record is really interesting, and he seems to be doing more work in the production/post-production process than he has done before. As a result, some tones and sounds have a slightly clinical feel to them, but not in a bad way, as you can clearly hear that that's how everything is meant to sound.

His singing, as always, is spot-on and his playing is remarkable. The only track I'm unsure about is 12 to 12 Vibe....I'm so used to the way he played it (Intro Song) on G3 '96, that hearing it sounding different is going to take some getting used to. I think I prefer the G3 '96 recording, it's got more balls, and it's got the added bonus of Brannen Temple playing drums.

I like the liner-notes and all the CD artwork are great, and Eric finally getting his new Favored Nations contract is a real blessing....finally, some freedom! Also, did you check out the video on his site of the live performance of "My Back Pages"? Definitely worth downloading!

What are your thoughts on the album? I know you heard some of it at his live shows before it was released and I remember you being very impressed with what you heard.

Ozzy / Iron Maiden Incident

Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood posted a lengthy statement at the band's official website yesterday (Tuesday, August 23rd) about the bizarre events that occurred during the band's last OzzFest appearance on Saturday (August 20th) near San Bernardino, California. In front of a crowd of 45,000, the band was pelted with eggs and other objects, had its power cut, and heard a voice chant Ozzy Osbourne's name over the PA at the beginning and end of its set. Many in the audience, as well as the members of Maiden themselves, believed the acts occurred at the behest of Osbourne's wife and manager, Sharon Osbourne.

Smallwood claimed that the incident was a "premeditated and coordinated attack" on Iron Maiden. The manager wrote, "In 30 years in this business and after attending hundreds of gigs I have never seen anything anywhere near as disgusting and unprofessional as what went on that night."

Smallwood added, "We know who authorized the making of the "Ozzy - Ozzy" chant tape the day before and how it was played secretly through the PA at the very beginning and end of our set. We also know who continually turned off the power interrupting our set at crucial moments."

Smallwood went on to thank the audience and "the great majority of the OzzFest crew," whom he said were "terrific." But he also warned, "Those who participated or stood idly by and watched as (the attack) went down should also be ashamed of themselves and I would certainly hope they never come near a tour with which we are involved."

Smallwood concluded by saying he was "immensely proud" of the way Maiden handled itself throughout the incident, and that the band deserves an apology "from a number of people, and you know who you are."

In an earlier statement, Sharon Osbourne accused Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson of "berating Ozzy and belittling the OzzFest audience." She was booed off the stage in San Bernardino while trying to speak to the audience after Maiden's set.

Maiden is heading back to the U.K. for several festival appearances, while OzzFest continues tomorrow (Thursday, August 25th) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

New machine allows soldiers to hurdle buildings - in a single bound . . .

LONDON (Reuters) - A device that allows people to scale tall buildings in if not a single, then at least two bounds, has been developed for the U.S. military.

The PowerQuick personal lifting device can raise or lower a load of up to 145 kg (320 lb) at the rate of one meter (yard) per second, enabling special forces, rescue services or even construction workers to quickly ascend or escape buildings.

New Scientist magazine said on Wednesday the operator would shoot a rope attached to a grappling hook to the top of the building and then attach the rope to a harness-like device which hauls them up.

It said one battery charge would be sufficient to climb 250 metres -- the equivalent of five times the height of the Statue of Liberty.

Quoin International, the Nevada-based company that developed the device for the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, said on its Web site the solid fuel military version was designed for hostage rescue and urban warfare.

However, the battery-powered civilian version had been designed with commercial applications such as building repair, logging or window washing in mind.

a new meaning of coming to a tv show near you soon . . .

Sperm donor reality show?

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Billionaire television producer John de Mol, behind the pioneer show Big Brother, will test the limits of reality TV with a program in which a woman searches for a potential sperm donor to conceive a child.

His new TV station Talpa, launched earlier this month, confirmed it will air a program called "I want your child ... and nothing else!" but gave no further details about the show due at 1830 GMT Wednesday.

"The plan is that we visit potential donors and -- of course on camera -- decide which man is most suitable," the 30-year old woman who will feature in the program said in an interview with De Telegraaf newspaper.

"Afterwards there will be artificial insemination," said the woman who was identified only as "Yessica" and who has bought a house with a room for a child.

The show is a one-off competing with four other reality TV programs, one of which follows five former prostitutes starting a cafe. The program receiving most votes from viewers Saturday, after all the shows have aired, will be turned into a series.

De Telegraaf also published an email address for men wanting to donate sperm to Yessica.
