fused9, This may not be what you want, but the info is here for Devil's Slide, or the actual location Joe probably wrote the song about... Devil's Slide

Does anyone know if it's true that Joe Satriani uses 22 fret guitars because 24 fret guitars cut down on tone? I've heard that Satriani himself said this, but I don't know. Is there any truth to either claim?

MichaelStevensG, I was discussing a 24 fret neck with my Luthier for a custom built guitar I'm considering, and he told me not to expect the harmonic points to be in the same place due to the neck pick-up needing to be set back to accomodate for the 2 extra frets...which makes sense to me....considering how much Joe utilizes harmonics in many different locations....

As for what Joe believe's....hmmm...good question!

We can change everything....

Stevee T on the same topic of harmonics.. Mattias IA Eklundh uses more natural harmonics than anybody, and he uses a 27 fret guitar.. where the 24 th fret is is a harmonic point , its pretty much useless on a 22 fret guitar unless your lenny breau, about changing the tone of a guitar.. i really dont think so.. its just old school thought versus new school. remember back in the day 22 fret neck s were dispised.. and steve morse uses a 23 fret neck on his ebmm sig model. oh well just a thought.

Harmonics - String physics is pretty cool. A good understanding of the harmonic series will lend to this discussion very well. While I am not an expert (I hated the series and sequence section of Calc) I have looked into this before. What I found is that the number of frets, changes the tone slightly. The added length allows the string to create more upper harmonics giving it a slighty sharper edge. This can be seen really well in the scale difference between Gibsons and Fenders. The shorter Gibson scale does not allow as many of the upper harmonics to be created. This can be seen easily on an ocilliscope. the wave pattern for a Gibson is shifted more towards the root tone. This gives the Les Paul (along w/ the solid mahogany boy) that nice round tone. Here is more on the harmonic series and it's relation to music. Enjoy!!

That's a bit too scientific (that link you posted), heh. I'd rather just read a more plain and put guitar-related article on "22 vs. 24." A guy named Ed Roman has one, but it's clearly idiotic (he says some pretty dumb things) and not worth reading. He defends the 24 fret necks; not saying that's dumb, but the way he does it is... lame, to say the least.

Can't remember where I heard that Joe Satriani said that 22 fret necks give more tone than the 24 frets, but since his signature guitars (Ibanez JS models, as you know) all have 22 frets, it would kind of make sense for him to have said that. I think.

He also only has two humbuckers and no single-coil in the middle like Steve Vai. I'm only recently getting into the dynamics and equipment relating to the guitar, only been playing the instrument for about 9 months for the past three and a half have I been playing it seriously, bucking down and getting serious about it, and I recently got a job at McDonald's so I'm going to spend the rest of this year getting some nice gear.

Washburn D10S acoustic guitar 1/case, Fender G-DEC, (don't know what guitar; I'm using a Fender Telecaster and it's just not cutting it, apparently; I'm thinking transparent lavender Ibanez S470DX [22 frets] or mirage blue Ibanez RG1570 [24 frets, so as you can see that's where I discovered this 22 vs. 24 argument]), DigiTech GNX4, and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp. That's about $2000-$2200, all off of Musician's Friend and/or Music123.com. I'll have all that by the end of October, mid-November, by my calculations. Not bad for a 16 year old in a pit-stop of a town. =)

Holy crap, I just realized it's August 14th. Two days and I'll be 17. Yay. O_o

I ramble a lot, I know. But anyway, ayep. I'd buy a JS100 but (although I love you, Joe!) I don't want a guitar with someone else's name on it. I want a guitar that they'll want to put MY name on. =)

TOALL: I just bought a kick donkey MKS pedal board. It fits everything inside great, and is very rugged. The only problem I have is that I'm finding that the morley pedals (bad horsie and little aligator) have BAAAAAAAD hum problems being even remotely near the built in power sources that power 9 9V pedals. Mind you, I'm running the morleys on their own 9V adapters (routed under the pedals to an extra outlet on the MKS's power module) because they have to run on their unique power supplys. The problem is not (however) with the MKS. I noticed that even getting the morleys next to a AC adapter causes the humming. It's just that having them in the close proximity that a pedal board creates is a problem. btw, I'm running the whole thing through a power conditioner, so noise should already be minimized. Any one got any fixes??? Please help! hha!

DCK: Thanks man, I'd hate to buy this nice modular pedal board that hides all of the adapters and cables underneath, only to have to run an external power strip with cables all over the place just to get them away from the Morley haah!
