Thank you for asking!

Joe Satriani...you still using the Groove Tubes Fat Finger? If so, the guitar model, or heavier bass model...if not, why?

Dear Joe: My name is Pablo Alpuín (but my friends call me "paly"), I'm 24 years old. I live in Florida in Uruguay (South America). I am a big fan of you. My english is not very good. I play the guitar. When I play the guitar I try to imitate you. I love Rock Music. My favorites guitarist are Jimmi Hendrix, Steve Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Scofield and the list is kind of big :-) . I like Jazz Fusion Music and musician such as Allan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson, Fattoruso Trio (uruguayan band).

I would like in a near future you come to my country (city: Montevideo) because here you have a lot of supporters, more than what you can imagine!

Bye, good luck.. reply pls.

Stevee T: I was playing the S470 Ibanez in those pics, but it's a great guitar too! I've relagated it to my outdoor gig guitar. Even thoug the custom is built like a tank, I don't want to chance getting it too hot/cold/wet. Thanks for checking them out though. When are we going to see some chrome boy pics?

Clarky: I didn't realise it was your birthday. Congrats man! Nice job on not killing your self with drugs and alcohol or the rock star life haha! I just figured I needed to congradulate you on something other than just existing on the planet another year. How old are you now?

Hi can anyone help me?? Im looking at the JS1000 and the JS100 Ibanez guitar. The JS1000 is a little, actually quite a bit out of my price range but is it worth the wait compared to the JS100? Thanks!

Keniko, thanks for the happy 1300 amigo! Yeah, it will be a while until I can afford a JS1000 too......especially since I really want a Washburn N4 as well!

js1200js1000, I'd probably end up getting one off ebay if I do get one. That said, it might work out cheaper to buy a low-season ticket to fly to New York, buy one there and fly back again.
Powerslave, thanks for sharing the pilot-to-ground crew gripe sheet! That really cracked me up.....have actually printed it to share with the folks!
Rob310, I would definitely go for the JS1000BTB or maybe the 1200.....the Black Pearl is nice enough but my bass is black, I wouldn't want another black guitar! Plus the burned finish on the BTB is so pretty. Considering the exchange rate, it is feasible that I could get a JS10th or PRM from the US and it would only cost me a couple of grand sterling. I think I've got a few years to think about it though!
fizz450, hey amigo, thanks loads for taking the time to download "Silver Rain" and listen to it! I'm glad it made an impression!

To answer your question - in terms of the technical side, I recorded it digitally on my PC, which I built specificallt for recording, using Cubase SX2 and arranging drum samples into a beat and making fills and stuff....then added bass and guitars.

In terms of the actualy artistic side - "how'd u come up with things like that? " - this tune started off with the rhyhtm guitar part. It uses an open drone note on the low E string, with a high 3-position power-chord sequence on the A and D strings. Having recorded that and looped it I tried to come up with a melody, and the first one I came up with had too many notes in it, so I simplified it and then hit on something I liked.

This is usually my process - either coming up with a bassline or rhythm guitar part and then a melody....haha, I'ts not that often that I think of the melody first! It's careful arrangement that makes something sound interesting though, and arrangement is something I find really hard. I can go into more detail on arranging techniques and ideas if you like, but I didn't want to swamp you in this response! haha.

Thanks again, for your kind comments!

Ryanmnz, yeah the JS1000 is worth having to save up for. If you can afford a JS100 then you're than half-way there, so I really recommend going all the way and getting the daddy! If you really can't afford it though, the JS100 is a surprisingly good guitar in it's price range!

Vai tomorrow!!!!!!!!

962/Suzie/Clarky/Mari - The Apollo is literally across the road from Hammersmith tube station, just outside of which - but also kind of inside - is a pleasant but small pub called The Pigeon, I think (defintely some kind of avian creature though...). I'm not working at all tomorrow, so the time is wide open as far as I'm concerned. We can also get quite a few down our necks considering it's so close to the venue. Unless of course you're driving. Don't drink and drive; it's just not safe, quite apart from the fact that the danger of spillage is increased by at least a hundred-fold. Clarky, I'll probably call you tonight sometime to sort stuff out. COngrats on the H & K purchase, Simon. Lucky bastard... lol. See you guys tomorrow!!!!

NM

P.S. - We now have official RECOIL merchandise available via the RECOIL website. Check it out!!!!

Clarky, hey man, yeah I'll be around tomorrow. Looks like I'll be spending a lot of the day kicking stones 'cause everyvbody's gonna be busy! haha. Oh, I meant to say, happy birthday! Hope you had a cool day!

fizz450, yeah having some half-decent gear behind you does really help. The less work you have to do to compensate for problems, the more work you can put into your creativity - I firmly believe in getting the best gear you can possibly afford for whatever you're doing, whether it's music, photography, sport....whatever. If it's something you're really into it's worth investing!

anyway, what's good recording software? Well I get on really well with Cubase SX2, it's massively versatile and powerful. It is one of the three leading recording packages - the other two are Pro Tools and Logic. These three are the three you will find in most studios, and you'll often find a combination of two being used for different purposes.

Because Cubase is what I've been taught, it's what I favour, but I'm sure if I had Pro Tools I'd get on with that brilliantly.....it's supposed to be the best, but Cubase and Logic are both equally great.

An external sound card would be really beneficial. You could get a USB or Firewire soundcard to use with your laptop and it would give you a fully portable studio! I used to use a Laptop but now use a PC, but still have an external sound card. That's the really important bit though. if you want more info on external sound cards just shout!

edit:

Neil, cool, thanks for sharing the inside info on the pub! haha. I'm going to be with family again so I'm not sure what they'll want to do, but will see you all at some point anyway!

Also, yeah man, I sincerely hope the dude gets the H&K in the post, pronto! The anticipation is killing me! You should monitor ebay for H&K stuff....there's not a lot, but this Attax 100 head only cost me a hundred quid.....can you believe that?! There was only one other person bidding on it.....the guy should have put a reserve on! hehe.

I'll let you know how it turns out, I'm hoping it'll have some of the fatness of it's big brother TriAmp.....I've read plenty of good reviews!

962 - Right now my DSL100 does everything I need it to do perfectly well, but the H7K stuff is really nice. The TriAmp is a phenominal machine. I was looking into getting an H&K amp a few years back, when my windfall was due, but I bought my bloomin' gorgeous RG570 Ltd. instead. No regerets!

Regarding studio gear, I'm a Logic man myself (sorry for 'eavesdropping'... lol). I can't get used to Cubase, no matter how hard I try, for whatever reason. My brother swears by it though, and he gets some great results form it. I use a PC at the moment too, but I might just be getting my hands on a second hand Apple G4 some time soon, which would be sweet!!! Macs are much better for recording purposes I reckon. But my next purchase, apart from some kind of semi-hollow jazz box, is going to be a decent audio interface. Then I need to upgrade my monitors. Any recommendations?
