The two most significant albums for me are:
1)'Passion & Warfare' - Steve Vai. This was the album that made me go "Holy shit!!! I didn't know these things could sound like that!!!!". Satch's 'Crystal Planet' kinda opened the door to this sort of stuff for me, but this album hit me right between the eyesand totally blew me away, and it still does now.
2)'Images & Words' - Dream Theater. The first DT album I bought, and I went out and bought every other one I could find thereafter. Petrucci is definitely one of my biggest influences, and listening to Dream Theater has totally changed the way I compose music.

Top 10 albums, eh? Well, now you got me thinkin'....
I just can't do it. There's simply too many to choose from, and I really can't put them in order of preference!!!
Right now I'm loving Lamb Of God's 'Ashes Of The Wake', and also 'Give & Take' by Mike Stern.

ok, I've made up my mind.
I've got this late 90's Hamer Explorer, since I was doing skynyrd for the time being. I've started looking into "Summer Song" and "motorcycle driver", and it's official.
I AM TRADING IN MY HAMER FOR AN IBANEZ WITH FLOYD ROSE!
any advice on what I should be looking for in a guitar of this style?

DCK: I would have to say that Merry Axemas and Crystal planet changed my musical life. I started playing guitar in 1996, and I'd been hearing about Satriani and Vai etc etc in name only, but finally in 1998 a buddy gave me that cd, and I was blown away. A little while after, a student gave me Crystal PLanet, and I went nutz! I was aware of the whole VH aproach to playing, but that cd showed me amped up playing and a more vocal aproach to soloing, along with all of the requisite tricks....when I finally saw Joe in 1999 for the first time, it really made me go "woa...I have to figure out how to do that." So that was huge for me....took my world from black and white to technicolor! From there, I started getting into more and more great guitar players to see what I could steal haha!

mikesb...I'm all ears when it comes to music...Roth does nothin for mine...Haggar...at least could carry a tune...without sounding like a stupid punk...but that's R&R...roudy's on drugs...i like to kick ass as much as anyone else (when it comes to music) but the arrogant attitude...enough negativity...on to good things like Joe & the premier of G3 Live in Tokyo TONIGHT!!!!

Dream Theater were AWESOME tonight, second half set was "Dark Side of the Moon" as expected- fantastic! "Us and Them" was especially brilliant. James La Brie's voice was so versatile! Some annoying kids shouting etc just before the first set, but karma took care of them- on the way out I saw one of them looking ill/ draped all over a chair....
Jimmy Kane/ also Master Yoda - glad you enjoyed DT too! :)
Clarky, cool, keep us posted nearer the time...

Hey Joe, is George Lynch is goin' to play in the G3. Awsome if he is! He deserves to be up there with the best, (yourself & Stevie). He is a great guitarist, I have got all his cd's, videos, and tapes from his days in Dokken to the Lynch Mob. I even had George Lynch's instructional video ordered from America, as I love his playing and creativity on the guitar. He is a genuine candidate! He's playing style is very different and stands out of the rest like yourself and stevie's. Hope you all come to Australia, I have not yet seen Steve or George Down here at all! I just missed Steve last time, but got to see you Joe! So Joe please ask George to make a CD with both yourself and Stevie. You don't know how over the moon a lot of people I know would be, especially my 60 yr old father, who love you, stevie & George. All our best wishes, your Australian fans, Johnny Evans & Father John Evans Snr!

The Japanese was awesome...where'd you learn to speak it sooo well?
What guitar did you use to open the set...did one of your sister's have anything to do with the design? Very Trippy! Beautiful!

dakook...looked like a special design in the Satriani Sister's era...wild psyhedelic pattern...very colorful...intricate pattern...never seen this one before...it appeared to be done on an older Satriani model....very nice...btw...I'll be posting a song this weekend in response (written specifically to your unfullfiled expectations) to more ripping guitar solos...hope this one does the trick? No offense taken..it spurs me on to Higher Ground (SRV..Stevie Wonder)...lol...giddy yup!
