So, let's go for my total recall about Joe.

Part I:

JOE & HENDRIX

There's a real filiation. We can obviously hear how Joe expands a part of the Hendrix's wah-legato attack and brings it on a new firepower. On songs like "Who Knows", "Machine guns", "Hear my train is coming", "Country blues" of Jimi, the filiation sounds absolutely clear, physically & psychically clear.

On the over hand, there's a very big difference Between Hendrix and Joe : Jimi works a lot of in the feeling of improvisation, all the time in a firsthand no man's land where he becomes THE BIG SOUND & creates something like the Bluesfusion. Joe works more in the meaning of composition, all the time in a paramount perfection's exigency, where he becomes a guy like the Chopin of Rockfusion..

My personal view is that on the emotive point, i can't put Joe in the Hendrix side of thing. Hendrix is crazy, fragile, eatS everything in very few time. Joe is very zen, calm, take his time. Nearest of Beck than Hendrix in all his path.

Rob310, I haven't seen the JS2K or JS90HAM in person, only in photos on the net. The 90HAM is kind of an odd one to me......it's such a dark shade it's almost black, and there's nothing really about it that makes it stand out. I really hope they do something wild for the 100th anniversary in 2008!

And for powered monitors I still reckon Alesis Monitor One MkII's are the best option......they are certainly what I'll be getting, some time next year when I've paid for the other stuff I've yet to pay for! haha.

Part II:

JOE & PROGRESSIV STUFF.

Joe gets the blues. We all know that. His biggest admitted influences on guitar come from Blues: Hooker, Hendrix, Gibbons. & the less admitted also: Beck, Gilmour, Page, Van Halen.

Historic point : The progressive rock stuff has nothing to see with the blues riff. It has broken the usual rules of the riff and the song : this stuff goes farther than the arrangement couplet/refrain. The progressive stuff has found his regularity in the progressiv irregularity of a concept. A non-standard harmonic/dissonant structures & alternate tunings could be a definition of Progressive stuff.

In fact, the first principle of Progressive stuff is the VARIATION of a theme. That is the opposite of almost all the Blues, of which the first principle is the REPETITION of a riff. That is the essential distinction.

Of course, nowadays, things have evolved a lot, and we can hear progressive variations in repetition (Satch : Searching : the solo is progressive on only one riff). & also the opposite (Dream Theater : A Change of seasons : all the stuff is progressive, but the poetic idea is the repetition of changing).

The Joe's speed attack is almost always synthetic. & That's very near of VH.

Any doubt? For an evidence, check the solos of the song "I'm the One" on the Van Halen album.

A speed attack almost always synthetic: what does that mean? That means that the important point isn't the execution of emotion & expression in the speed notes after notes, even if Joe can have an analytic attack; the important point is the fact that the general form of the speed is the emotion & expression. The effect is like a wave. Joe is almost always surfing on the speed as if it's a united wave. Joe plays melodicaly the speed.

That's very different of a Malmsteen shredding, which is more analytic. The emotion is like touching each point of the execution. Yngwie plays quick the melody.

The speed with Joe is an essential condition of the hardrock & also a synthetic embellishment for his lyric expression in all the styles. & that comes from Van Halen. But Joe combines the VH shredding with the Hendrix Legato. Joe Satriani is probably the first guitar player who has definitly understood that the Hendrix legato + Van Halen Shredding = a new vision of guitar rock.

ONCE MORE, JOE SATRIANI WITH FEW WORDS.

Turned up in 1986 with the very discrete Not of this Earth, Joe Satriani has opened the way to a new generation of guitar rock players: the concert artists. Indeed, when Satriani starts to change the instrumental landscape of rock & hardrock guitar, the rythmical ground is built. From Chuck Berry until Eddie Van Halen, with some incredible players like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Alvin Lee, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, David Gilmour, The brothers Young, Tony Iommi, Randy Rhoads, the rythmical rock & hardrock guitar with some good solos is like a complete Art. It's in this solid climate, & while a little unknown called James Hetfield is changing all the rythmical attitude, signing something like the end of Hardrock & the begining of Metal, that Joe explodes all the limits of Hardrock'n'roll with the now mythic Surfing with the Alien. The technics of Wahwah legato, sweeping, hammering & alernated pick are unheard of. The quality of melodical inspiration is out of doubt. The riffs are simple & efficient. The sounds are absolutely avant-gardist, prefiguring, after Pink Floyd & Van Halen, the techno music's sonorities as nobody in the rock world .

With an exigency of technical perfection total & a lyrical concern for melody & beauty, little by little, Joe is gonna to give a new defintion of the riff, more & more progressiv without get out of the riff attitude. His solo is an incredible fusion of classical music & Rockblues. All his music is like a lyrical theater of riff which goes across the time & the genres ( Rock, Hardrock, Funk, Blues, Country, Classique, Metal, Techno, Pop) without never lose his deep blues & rock'n'roll roots.
