Zen - hahaaa.. Sir Clarky and the quest for the ‘holy shit’..

Mikey - before I get to replacing the riffing guitars in The Raft, I’m going to replace the acoustic [using Sloth]
a pal of mine loaned me a seriously nice condenser mic so that I could record Virtus and I still have it..
the acoustic on the track at the moment was recorded ‘electro’.. it sounds fine, maybe a little thin.. however, mic’d up it’ll sound so much better..
and as I have the mic, already wired up and jacked into the mixing desk..
well it’d be rude not to.. lmao..
Satriella - no probz..
my album is my number one priority right now.. my best guess is that even once all the music is recorded and mixed, it’ll still take a few months cos all the misc stuff that needs sorting like mastering, art work, setting up the website, copyright, pressing etc…
so.. finger in the air.. I’ll be hoping for a spring release..
this project, from conception has taken 4 years so far..
Keniko - I think I understand what you are trying to ask, so.. here goes..

I think you are trying to determine the chords within a given scale type that have the strongest impact.. or chords that typify a style / genre maybe??
I think you’re ‘barking up the wrong tree’ a little here..
think on this:
does all blues music follow a form of being 12 bars long and using only chords I, IV and V??
the answer is most definitely “no”
yes, the I, IV, V progression is common, but blues music is much greater in scope than this - especially hybrid styles like Chicago and Texas blues which have jazz and country components respectively..

this being the case, is the II, V, I thing a jazz thing? And does it occur in all jazz music??
again.. no and no..

the II, V, I and VI, II, V, I are known to jazzers as a “turn-around” because it most often occurs at the end of a progression.. and turns you around to get back to the start..
given that this is a “cycle of 5ths” progression you can do some interesting suff with it. However, a classical type like me would recognise this progression and a “prefect cadence” with some nice approach chords.
the function is essentially the same from a musical "grammar" point of view..

I’m thinking that you are looking for a typical model for each style.

In my view this is unwise. You’ll not find what you’re looking for because it does not exist.

You are better off learning lots and lots of songs of a great variety styles.
Then study what you’ve learned. Figure out what makes the song work by looking at the chords progressions, inversions, key and key changes, the song form, etc etc..
Then you’ll get to see a wide range of scale and modal usage by the examples of others.

But one thing that I’m am 100% certain of is that a chord progression alone will not determine a specific mode, scale or style of music.
a more useful thing to learn with respect to modal playing is a technique called “melodic substitution” and another called “parallel modulation”
these techniques will not screw your chord selection down to those that occur within specific modal contexts,
it's the notes [via scales and modes] you choose to sound over each indiviual chord that makes the difference tonally...

Mikey - Virtus is done.. all recorded and mixed....

My pal [who's mic it is] says that he has no great need for it right now..

so once I've sorted the acoustic in the Raft I'll return it...

which is also a great excuse to go out for a beer and a curry with him too.. lol...

962 - On the pickup discussion I have a RG 560 with a Fred-bridge and ProTrac-neck. Then the S470 with Tone zone -bridge and an Air Norton in the neck. Compared to my RG the S is way thin sounding. I have to have another bank of presetes for it just to take a bit of the harshness out. I do find it a little harder to catch the pick harmonics but feel that nay be more hand position than the guitar. I do find a bit of an adjust needs to be made mentally when I go from the 24 fret to the 22. Just that little but throws off my hand position. But were talking pickups. So I'm not sure if the thinnes is the guitar or the pickups. I haven't taking the S in for set up yet (Ionly got it in Feb) so things may change when it is set up properly. I have a bit of a humming problem too so ... maybe the PUs aren't wired right. Well along post to really say nothin.

Novemeber 17, 2005 Well we are at the end of the year and I still don't have a calander of events for 2006. We desperately want to attend a concert sometime in the near future. There is a very large group of people here in Texas that woulld LOVE to see Joe in concert. Please let us know when and where so that we can make plans to be there. I wanted to give my son tickets for Christmas, but I still have graduation to consider. He truly loves your music and has a god given talent he has patterned after watching you. Since you won't be around for Christmas, do you have any ideas for an unusual Christmas gift. Looking forward to your response, ProudMAMA

Good Morning Satchland..... How are you Peeps Today?

It's friggin cold in Chi-Town. Unseasonable cold. 5 above with the wind chill last night. Collectively lets all say : THAT SUCKS...Here we go...1,2,3.....THAT SUCKS.... LOL......

suzo..... Thanks so much for signing our guest book. It means alot to me. I appoligize for not seeing your post yesterday above Satriellas post. It was in plain view and in English....lol....Perhaps Fourecent Orange would of helped....lol....maybe?..... Sorry, thanks again. Did you get a chance to see Sean's mural of SWTA? I'm so proud of our studio but the mural...well, is frosting on the cake. Satriani frosting..... our favorite. As I'm posting I'm listening to LISF...Love Thing just finished and Stu's bass solo is playing. We our truly blessed for Joe to be here on this earth. Everybody says this all the time but...Joe's music is second to none. It just takes you places. It paints picture in your mind. Anyway, Thanks again...Hugs to you.

Clarky..... Thanks for your comments. I undrstand what you're saying. I was looking for common chords as a spring board for a modal chord progression. That's why I used the Blues 1,4,5 and the Jazz 2,5,1 as examples. These our common chords for these genres but as you said are not etched in stone. Is there a music theory book that you would recommend? Thanks for your help.

Have A Great Day Everybody ! ! ! Stay Warm......

Civgeek: Those humbuckers shouldn't be humming at all. I think someone wired them as single coils (split coil mode). I have my custom wired so that it gets 9 diff modes, and one of them is a AirZone in true split mode. It does have hum in this mode, and it sounds pretty skanky and thin. The Air Zone is basically the Tone zone, and wired in standard series humbicking mode it is a very fat and clear sounding pickup....so is the AirNorton.

Clarky..... Yes, stacking 3rds from each note of any given scale will give you the chord name for each note of the scale. Hence the name...Harmonized scale. My theory knowlege is less then basic. I'm looking into developing a more understanding of this subject. Help me Clarky-Won you're my only help...lol.....

js1200.... Yes.... You're correct. Had a trace of the White stuff. Elgin is aprox...20 miles West of Addison(my home town)This weather is unseasonal around here. The temp. should still be around 40 - 50 degrees. Oh Well ! ! ! it's a prerequisite for what's comin' But we try to prolong the cold as much as possible. I don't really mind the snow or cold...as long as it dosen't get ridiculous....like..... 90 below wind chills. If the cold stays a balme upper 20's I'm fine. Teens or lower...SUCKS BIG TIME. I know you know what I mean. You're in the Upper UP. That's worse then Chicago. Stay warm. Take care.

Hi all ! I just subscribed registered yesterday so I'm a newbie. First of all I would like to as when we will be lucky enough to have Joe Satriani in concert here in Portugal ?

I play the electric guitar for 6 years, never tooked lessons, and I work as a system administrator, so I don't have much free time, all to say that I'm not good :) (Joe's and some other guys fault, that make all the rest of the guys look bad :) ) I have the cheapest Aria I could bought that time, but I had to tune the arm a few times, I even had to REPLACE the FRETS! yeah! I don't play that hard, so I guess it's just bad material. These I put are going the same way. Is this common ? never heard of no one with this situation. I would like to a new guitar, a Jackson MG Series Dinky DXMG Black, kind of intermediate model. Does anyone have some ideas about this guitar ? May the rock be with you.

Anyone here see Yngwie Malmsteen on his latest tour (Unleash the Fury)? If so, how many bands played before he took the stage? I'm going to see him the 30th, I don't live too close to the venue. I was going to leave pretty early so I could get up by the stage, but if crappy bands are playing for a few hours before he goes on, I'd rather try and figure out what time I should get there by to just see him. The place is a decent sized venue, you can see fine from anywhere, and pretty much push your way to the front of the stage if you want. The doors (for the show I'm going to) open at 7, any idea what time Yngwie would take the stage? If I can avoid seeing the 1st few bands (which I heard are pretty bad) I'd be able to enjoy seeing Malmsteen more, Yngwie will probably be playing for a while, wouldn't want to leave during his set because my legs are aching from standing through a few crap bands that went on earlier. Any help would be appreciated.
